4 Chapter 4: After.

Once I had entered his office, nobody was in there-

The door slammed shut behind me, after I had entered the room a few steps, causing me to pivot and see him, and his glorious self.

"S-sir.." I mumbled, bowing my head gently, before taking a further few steps back and dropping into the chair opposite his empty one.

He soon followed in pursuit and sat in the chair on the other side of his new desk.

We sat in silence for a few moments, my eyes averting awkwardly around the room, while his own gaze remained on me. He eventually broke the silence, and stood back up.

"Miss Alinsky, I've heard you are quite competent." He started, while walking around the desk and sitting on the edge, in front of me. "And considering the last assistant had resigned, I have hopes that you can fill in." His expression did not falter, as he watched me with sceptical eyes.

"I-.. uh.." My voice failed me, and my eyes remained to the floor.

"Tell me, do you believe you could complete the job?" He questioned, not giving me a moment to think.

"D-do I believe I could... complete the job..?" I asked, mostly myself, as my eyes slowly rose to look into his. An icy gaze returned, filled with nothing but doubt and hatred. How dare he? I don't even know his bloody name.

"Yes, Miss Alinsky. Can you fill in the position and uptake the tasks?" His voice was almost growly, as he spoke, becoming impatient with me. Well, I would just make him wait a little longer.

"W-well..." I diverted my gaze once again, looking around. "I-"

"Just answer the damned question already." He hissed, voice low and intent on intimidating me. He was fortunate that this room was sound-proof, else someone might've heard him by now.

"I suppose I cou-"

"Great, here you go, then." He dropped a pile of papers onto my lap from his desk, not even allowing me to finish my sentence. It caused me to make a low growl from the back of my throat, anger spiking, though I managed to keep my mouth shut and take the papers with ease back to my desk. I thought I heard a small chuckle from him, but it must've been my imagination, as he seemed far too serious a man for that.

I smoothed out my black and red tartan, knee-length skirt as I sat down, before the English owner of the company, Mel, had approached me. Due to this being a private company, she was around often. I got on with her well, despite her being quite a bit older than me.

Strands of silver laced her auburn bun, though she had crinkles around her eyes from how often she smiled.

"Good morning, Emilie." Mel's voice certainly took my mind off of the aggravating male in the other room.

"Good morning, Mrs Smith." I returned her smile, standing and taking her hand outstretched hand, shaking it.

"I hear you got promoted due to a certain someone's input," She tapped her nose with a soft smile. "I know you'll do wonders for the new manager, I have no doubt. I've even refurbished the old assistant's room, to make it both more modern and accessible for you."

"Oh, thank you so much!" I couldn't contain my ecstasy, that was indeed incredible. "I cannot express how grateful I am to have my own office." My smile was ever-growing.

"It's not a problem, dear. I'll prepare for your stuff to be moved in there within the day." She said lastly, and I nodded, before she moved into the new manager's room. I am still yet to find out his name, especially if I am to be his new assistant.

I moved into my new office, looking around it. The room was certainly spacious, and the back window opened to reveal the street in front of the little building.

Sitting in my chair, I looked further around the room, noticing the small details, such as the potted plants that edged the window and on the new desk.

After I had finished working on the many sheets that I was given to review, I began spinning around on my chair. Ignorant to the knocking, the door opened, and I immediately stopped. I shifted on my seat as that familiar scent filled my nostrils.

"Done already?" The manager had entered my new office. My eyes must've been as wide as saucers, guiltily caught in the act of slacking. He knew it too, as a smirk crept onto his face. It felt very out of character, even though I don't know the man at all.

"...yes.." I mumbled, my cheeks flushing red as I stood and held out the pile of paper towards him.

He snatched one from the top once he had approached, "Hmmm.." He hummed in thought, examining every little detail of my review. "Seems fine to me."

'Fine?' I had thought, my lips pursing. This man was certainly ungrateful, and either set his standards too high, or was just too big-headed to see the hard work I had put in.

"I... I don't think you've told me your name." I commented, after a moment or two of silence.

His icy gaze flicked up from the paper, raising a brow. "Anthony. Anthony Dalton."
