3 Chapter 003:

Douluo Continent, Heaven Dou Empire, Heaven Dou Library

It was almost noon, with the sun beaming down on the many faces and slants of the Heaven Dou Empire. Some light filtered through a tall, glass window as it fell onto a four-legged wooden table. Seated at this table were the two small figures of children, a boy and girl.

The boy's long, messy, green hair gave him a wild look that sharply contrasted the eerily calm and deep sheen of his eyes, which were like small, purple oceans. He had a mountain of books next to him, its careless structure indicating he had already finished perusing their contents. In his hands, was the last book titled, "A Summative Overview of Spirit Cultivation." Reading it, many expressions were seen on the boy's face before he finally turned the last page and set it aside the mountain of other similarly-themed books. His tiny mouth let out a barely audible sigh.

As if hearing this sigh, a guilty-sounding voice broke out in the boy's head, "It's my fault, Little Wei. If only I was stronger, I'm sure I would have transported us to the right plane."

Responding to this voice, the boy mentally replied, "It's not your fault, Grandfather. You had told me there were risks beforehand, there was nothing else to be done. We were simply unlucky. But, it might not be all bad, Grandfather. I think this plane is even better for cultivation than yours. I could ascend to immortality much faster here."

This boy was the reincarnated Zhang Wei, now named Dugu Wei. It had been nearly six years since his reincarnation and he could now confidently say that he had grasped the underlying laws and structure of the Douluo Continent. And from what he had seen, some people had been able to ascend to godhood in as little as 30-40 years, almost five times shorter than it would have been in his Grandfather's old plane. Wei thought it had to be much better.

However, his Grandfather seemed to disagree. "You are looking at ascension much too simply, Little Wei. Sure, there have been people able to ascend at very young ages, however there are many more unable to advance. While cultivation in my plane requires talent as well, it is not as quantifiable as 'Martial Spirits' in this world."

Wei knew what his grandfather meant. If someone was unfortunate enough to be born with a trash spirit, then it was like they were directly eliminated from the start. Adding this to the fact that most useful spirits came from having a good pedigree, made it quite unreliable. However, thinking about his new incarnation as Dugu Wei, he felt lucky that it did not seem to him that his pedigree was in any way lacking.

In fact, the biological grandfather of this body was named Dugu Bo, a man who was almost one of the Spirit Douluos, the highest existences on the continent.

From the books he had read, Dugu Wei knew that Spirit Masters, or people who trained in spirit cultivation, were largely divided into ten ranks depending on the 'level' of their spirit. For every ten levels beginning with level 0, being a mortal, there was Spirit Scholar, Spirit Master, Spirit Grandmaster, Spirit Elder, Spirit Ancestor, Spirit King, Spirit Emperor, Spirit Saint, Spirit Douluo, and all the way at level 100, God.

(A/N: Just search 'Spirit Rank' on google for more details and clarification, there is a fandom page available for it. Also, the repetition of Spirit Master is not an error but is how it is actually called in the series. Slightly confusing, I know.)

Speaking of his grandfather, Dugu Wei looked across from him. Also seated at the wooden table was a girl hiding her sleeping face behind a book. She had teal hair and purple eyes like himself, but appeared much less mature and instead more fitting of her age. She was his younger twin sister, Dugu Yan.

While Dugu Wei was happy to find out that he had a blood sister in this life after his past-life parents' left him all alone, he was also slightly confused on how to interact with her. Luckily for him, however, it seemed that his sister still liked him a lot, as she would often spend time with him in the library rather than going out to play with other kids despite her lively character. Seeing these naive and adorable actions, he could not help but want to live up to her expectations as an older brother.

Thinking up to this point, he moved the book away from her face, briefly scanning the title. His eyes bulged momentarily as he gave his sister another look, now followed with a raised eyebrow. He muttered slightly under his breath as he made some remarks about the conduct of the library staff. Still, he gently woke her up.

Dugu Yan's eyelashes trembled as her eyelid slowly opened, revealing purple eyes not entirely like his own. If his were like the deep bottom of the ocean, hers were the sparkling top of the sea. She looked around sluggishly before she asked, "You finished reading, Brother?"

Dugu Wei only nodded at first but then, after remembering the book she had opened, decided to add, "Didn't you as well?"

Dugu Yan nodded as well. "I did but I couldn't understand any of it. I think it was complete nonsense, Brother."

Looking at the book laid out on the table, he read the name once more. "Domineering Ceo Wants My Babies After Divorce?!" Indeed, it did sound like nonsense.

Seeing that she did not understand any of the contents, Dugu Wei let it go and thought to buy some candy for the both of them along the way. Hearing this announcement from her brother, she gave him a quick hug of joy before bouncing along the street a few steps ahead of him.

Looking at her figure, Dugu Wei thought it would surely be best for his sister to remain this way. However, he would soon find out that life is oftentimes unpredictable and biased to other ends.
