Chapter 4

The real safe wasn't on the wall but on the floor. With some effort, Dio pushed the old table aside and carefully lifted the worn-out carpet.

It was on top of a wooden floor that looked solid but was easy to remove.

After these simple steps, Dio finally reached the purpose of his visit to Ma Gunn's office.

It was much safer than the rough lead safe on the wall, which was a modern safe with a digital display in front of him.

Dio discovered this place entirely by chance during one of his many inspections of this area.

Dio saw the marks on the carpet that showed the table had been moved several times.

When he found this safe for the first time, he felt relieved; he had nearly stopped looking for what rightfully belonged to him.

That day, Dio didn't have the time to try to open it, so this would be his first try.

"So, let's see if the old lady is as predictable as she seems."

Dio muttered to himself while pressing the button that activated the safe's display.

"02, 08, 56, 74,"

Dio entered the combination on the display, and when he pressed "enter," the light turned green, confirming that the safe was open.

Ma Gunn was a tough criminal organization leader, but she was also an old woman with technical problems.

So Dio wasn't surprised that the password was the same as the one for the old safe on the wall.

The password was also written on the back of a photograph in a frame on her desk.

"Bingo,"

Dio whispered when he saw the contents of the safe.

A number of piles of one-hundred-dollar bills. At first glance, it looked like there were probably half a million here.

Dio saw some money and a small red diary, but it wasn't what he had really come for.

When he started regaining his memories of the past, he remembered some memories when he was ba baby.

He couldn't recall the face of the woman who had abandoned him, his likely mother, but he clearly remembered how she had carried him to a church, wrapped him in a blanket, and placed him on the floor in front of the door.

Then she took off her necklace and put it around his neck, kissed him on the forehead, and left.

That's the necklace he's looking for.

Dio needed it because his instinct tells him it's very important, not because he has any affectionate feelings or memories of the woman who left him.

Ma Gunn seemed to think the same; when Dio was brought to her, she took the necklace from him. She gave it to one of the seniors and told him to find out its value.

Dio remembered this incident very clearly because it was so clear in his mind.

A few hours later, while Ma was still watching over him, the senior returned and said the necklace was worthless.

Ma had good intuition and decided to keep the necklace to learn more about it.

"She wears it."

That was the only explanation for where it could be.

He had already gone through Ma Gunn's room, looked through all her jewelry and personal items, and found nothing.

Now, there was this safe.

'Maybe she sold it?'

'Which is another very likely choice?'

She may have noticed something special about the necklace, so she put it up for sale after looking for a buyer.

In any case, there's only one person who knows where to find it.

Dio doesn't have the means to get answers from her.

But let's get back to the safe.

Dio decided not to pay attention to the money and open the small red diary.

The old lady's writing was hard to read, but the information was clear, so he had no problem reading it.

A list of dates, times, places, and weights in kilograms is written on the side.

He didn't need to be a detective to realize these were delivery dates and locations where she received goods and then distributed them among Gotham's gangs.

Dio flipped through all the pages until he reached the last one, where today's date and time, the location, and two more next dates are listed.

He found a blank page, took a pencil, and started writing the dates from the beginning of the year.

As Dio did this, he started to think of a plan. Dio is not strong enough to handle Ma Gunn by himself, but he can find someone who is.

Dio can escape and free the kids from this hell if he gets rid of her. The plan has always been the same; only the method needs to change.

At first, he was planning to escape, go to Metropolis, find good reporters at the "Daily Planet," and use their help to publish a story about Ma Gunn's shelter, which would solve the problem.

But before that, he had to find his necklace.

Now, he needs help to retrieve it, as well as someone he can trust to take down Ma Gunn here in Gotham.

The hard part is finding good cops in Gotham, which isn't easy, but it is possible.

The problem is that if a child gives evidence in an investigation, it might not be taken seriously, especially if the evidence was gathered in a way that was not legal.

In addition, he's more likely to talk to someone who fights for justice in this city—someone who will listen to him and look into the evidence—if he can contact them.

Luckily, Dio has a plan for how to reach them.

There's only one person who can easily find them; everyone in the city knows that when the signal lights up, he comes.

So, all he has to do is turn on the signal and wait for Batman.
