Legion of Light (Part 3)

***Present day***

"It's the Legion of Light," Luca said as we got level with the rear of the convoy. I could feel his body tense up as the knights started looking at us as well. It wasn't the kind of tense one gets when scared, but more like a respectful body state.

I tapped his shoulder to bring his focus back to the road. "Increase speed, take us forth."

Clearly, this was a supply and troop convoy. But what worried me was the number of soldiers out on active escort. Even though it was a long way to Korben yet.

I needed to know.

As we passed by the convoy I noticed some adventurer carriages mixed in with the legion's convoy. Lisbeth must have been talking about this. Adventurers tagging along with the Legion on their way to Korben. But what really caught my attention was the second flag flying alongside the flag of the Everhart Sacred Sword. I finally realized whose convoy this was. Oh man, this ain't gonna be easy.

As we got on level with the front, the lead commanding knight wearing a full metal armor and a golden cape, recognized who I was and signaled us to keep speeding ahead. We did as he asked and he along with his deputy, spurred on their horses to match our speed.

The knight closed in right by our side and jumped onto our caravan, right beside Luca, as the other knight took control of his horse while riding his own.

He took off his helmet and sighed as he turned to me. "Finally an adventurer, huh? Off to your first quest?"

"Yeah. Just registered today. This is my-"

He turned to look ahead and then back at me. "Introductions can wait. I really shouldn't be away from my convoy like this. Neither can I stop them for a little chit-chat. Meet us at the road that forks off to Bael. We'll be stopping the convoy nearby for the night. We'll talk then."

With that, he jumped off the caravan back onto his horse and slowed back to the convoy with his deputy.

"Phew, that man's got no chill," Ren commented.

Yep, that was sudden for all of us.

"He is a division commander. He is on his convoy mission as well. That's how it should be." Luca pointed out.

I scratched the back of my head and went back to my place. "Yeah well, that's how he is. Let's go wait for him at the place. It's a bit off our course I presume, but it's fine.

As expected it wasn't long before the convoy caught up to us. A knight came over to receive us and led us to their spot.

It was no longer a surprise, but it still never failed to impress me. The speed and efficiency at which the legion worked. They had barely started setting up camp by the time we reached. But it didn't even take them an hour before they were all done. The entire camp, a few acres across, all built up before you knew it.

We walked around until we found the commander but he was busy orchestrating the camp setup, signaling to us that he will talk to us later. Instead, we were led to a tent set up for us.

"I guess we are staying here for the night," Elaina said.

"I like this. It's a fun experience." Sylvie remarked as she got into the tent first.

"I gotta agree. Camping with the Legion of Light so close is more than I could ask for." Luca said with a rare smile on his face.

I shrugged. "For me, it's no big deal either way. The legion is like my second home. If y'all are good with this, so am I."

"I wanna go kill some stuff already. But I guess these kinds of unexpected waste of time comes with being in a team." Ren whined as he slowly dragged his feet behind us.

"Alright, Mr. Solo get in." Elaina pushed him into the tent with me following them.

It was a rather simple military tent, but large enough for all of us to have enough space of our own. It didn't take long for us to choose our spots and set down our stuff. Once all set, we decided to go for a walk around and check out the legion's camp. Ren had to be pulled out of the tent as he kept whining about how boring it is, but was the first to get comfortable in the tent and now refused to get out.

As usual, efficient and on point. The entire camp was made in a systematic and planned manner, keeping ease of access and free movement in focus. As I remember, they make sure the troops can deploy effectively and quickly to any threat, in case of a crisis or an emergency. But looking at the overall structure, I could tell it was kept with defense in mind, defense from every direction. The layout of the troop tents and weapon storages was geared more toward instant engagement instead of just quick deployment. Especially the supplies were secured right in the middle of the camp, barricaded, and surrounded by barrier runes. The barrier runes won't be able to stop any physical attackers by themselves but it will be able to ward off projectile and long-range magic attacks. All in all, they were well prepared for any attack, but didn't know which direction they will get attacked from, if not all.

"Damn, that's hardcore. It's almost as if we are at war." Ren remarked casually looking around at the camp as well. He had a keen eye.

Everywhere we went, legionnaires who recognized me, stood up and greeted me, and those who didn't recognize me, were shocked to meet me personally, but then did the same as their fellow Legionnaires. Anywhere else, I would have become flustered and told them to just treat me as a regular adventurer, but not here. Not with the legion. There is a reason why. Instead I simply greet them back with a smile and move on.

After walking for a while and asking around, we finally reach the command tent. It was much larger than any other tent and had quite a few people inside. Some were moving around with reports and talking to each other while there were others who were busy at makeshift tables for communications. But we found the commander on the other end of the tent, busy over a map of the region along with a couple of knights.

When he saw us, he left his map and came over to us "I see you actually became an adventurer. Ah sorry, I didn't introduce myself to your team, right? Hello, I am Rignar Nolsen, Division Commander of the 14th Arsenal, Legion of Light."

Each of my teammates introduced themselves as well. Commander Rignar folded his arms and nodded as they did. "I see, I see. Well, it's good that you guys came over. I was just about to take a break as well. Come on, let's go over to my personal tent."

Just as we were about to exit the tent, Rignar called out behind him. "Colton! Join us."

"Yes sir." responded one of the knights by the map. Ah, he was the knight who was with Rignar back when we first met this evening. Colton rushed over to join us on our way to the commander's tent.

Rignar introduced us to him. "This is Captain Colton, my deputy for this supply escort mission. Still a bit green, but decent enough to handle some work."

We introduced ourselves to Captain Colton as well. Well at least my team did, just as I was about to introduce myself, Colton interrupted me. "You are Master Liam Everhart, right? A Descendent of Light and son of the great hero, William Everhart?"

Rignar sighed and pressed his forehead. "Listen to me carefully Colton. We, legionnaires, do not refer to him like that. Because here in the legion he isn't just the hero's son. He is the—"

"My name is Liam Everhart. Vice Commander of the 10th Arsenal, Legion of Light."
