The New Beta

Two Years Later

Dawn's POV

"Dawn!" Joey yells from down the stairs and I exit my room and stare down the staircase.

"What?" I ask him annoyed and he gives me a pointed look. A look that said stop-pouting-this-is-important and I cross my arms over my chest and nod for him to continue.

"There's a small rogue family waiting downstairs to apply for asylum." He tells me and I sigh running my fingers through my hair.

"What are their circumstances?" I ask throwing my hair up into a messy ponytail as I trot down the stairs towards Joey.

"The son was kicked out of his pack for being able to disobey the Alpha command and his family chose to go with him." He explains and I cringe the situation sounding all too familiar.

"Natural born rogue?" I ask following him into the downstairs living room and he shakes his head in disagreement.

"Non-inherited dormant Alpha gene." He tells me and I whistle sticking my hands into the pocket of my Jersey.

"That's rare." I comment and Joey chuckles nodding his head.

"Extremely rare, the Alpha felt threatened by his gene and had him banished but not branded as a rogue." He explains and I nod my head entering the living room. As Joey described a small family of 3 stand in the living room, the mother had to be at least 40 years old and the father appeared to be around 45 not much older than his mate. The son has to be no younger than me by a couple years, he has to be at least 15 years old; with dark brown hair and blue eyes. He was handsome I have to admit, but he would never be as handsome as my mate, wherever he is.

"Hello, my name is Dawn, I'm the...founder of this...community." I explain struggling to find the words to fully explain our situation, I'm not the Alpha and this is not technically a pack as there is no official Alpha, beta or third in command and we haven't gained approval from the werewolf council. So, what else was I supposed to call this situation. I reach out my hand for him to shake.

"Nice to meet you Dawn, I'm Kyle and this is my wife Zara and my son Finn." The father introduces them all, shaking my outstretched hand. I take my hand back and cross my arms over my chest and I turn to face Finn.

"So, you have a dormant Alpha gene?" I ask him and he nervously nods his head in agreement.

"Prove it." I say and he raises an eyebrow in confusion.

"How am I supposed to do that?" He asks and I turn to look at Joey, his eyes widen and he slowly tries to back away but I quickly grab his arm and drag him back.

"Command Joey here to do something, I want to see how dormant the gene really is." I tell Finn and he nods looking at Joey, I can see his pupils darken slightly but they didn't go completely black like most Alpha eyes.

"Jump up and down." He orders Joey but of course Joey doesn't start jumping up and down like a weirdo, but I can see the strain in Joey's face and the sweat rolling down his forehead.

"His command is not all that powerful, but it hurts a lot to resist." Joey explains after Joey drops his command on him and I nod my head in approval.

"That's actually perfect." I comment and they look at me like I'm crazy.

"How is a barely existing Alpha command perfect?" Joey asks sounding grumpy and I chuckle giving him a nudge with my elbow.

"Think about it, our little pack is supposed to be based around the idea that you won't be forced to do anything you don't want to do, and his Alpha gene allows you to go against it if you truly believe it's not in your best interest." I explain and Finn seemed to let out a deep breath and I smile, knowing that he would be happy somewhere where the thing that got him banished could be the same thing that makes him treasured somewhere else.

"Does this mean we can join your 'pack'?" He asks and I nod my head with a smile.

"You and your family are allowed to stay, on one condition." I say and he nods his head wanting me to continue.

"Be my beta?" I ask and his eyes widen in surprise, even Joey's jaw seems to drop.

"Of course, I'd be honoured!" Finn answers and I nod my head before turning to one of my pack members.

"Olivia can you take Kyle, Zara and Finn to their rooms and have Finn set up in a room upstairs?" I ask her and she smiles respectfully and nods her head leading the small family away.

"Dawn what were you thinking?" He asks me in a calm voice but I can hear the criticism in his voice.

"Don't you think it's time we make our rogue pack official?" I ask nudging him again with my elbow and he sighs loudly and very over dramatically.

"Hmm I pretty sure I thought of that two years ago when we started his pack, I'm certain my exact words were 'Hey Dawn, when are we going to officiate the pack'?" He replies sarcastically and I chuckle.

"In order to start a pack your leader needs to have the Alpha gene." I explain and he nods his head realisation coming across his face.

"With Finn here we can finally become an official pack." He comments and I nod tapping my index finger on my temple.

"Smart, aren't I?" I say with a smirk and Joey gives me an annoyed look.

"So is Annalise cooking tonight?" I ask feeling a drool coming on, Joey's mate Annalise is the best cook in the pack.

"Yes, and as always you're invited." He tells me and a grin breaks across my face, and I pat him on the shoulder.

"I'll see you at dinner!" I sing before leaving Joey in the living room...
