1 PROLOGUE

They say that right before you die, your whole life flashes before your very eyes. Well then, I must be able to live because events that haven't happened yet are already pushing themselves into my head.

The raw images of him slaughtering me like an animal, ripping my head off my neck, tearing me open, making me bleed till I choked on my own blood resurfaced briskly into my mind, pushing everything out of its way.

As I leaned more into the wall for more coverage, I shut my eyes closed, fists clenched, trying to think of a way out of this. My head was blank and void of any reasonable idea.

I flinched, goosebumps coursing through my whole body upon hearing his deep voice reverberating through the walls of the prison building.

"Aurora." I could hear his footsteps drawing in, closing in, almost like he was right behind me. "Where are you, Aurora?" His cold and deep voice full of deadly threats shot shivers down my spine.

"I can hear you breathing. The ways and manner in which I had planned to unplug your life support." He laughed menacingly, the cackling sounds resounding in my ears even after he had stopped. "Sweetheart, there are no words to describe the process." He roared into another fits of psychopathic laughter, mocking me defiantly.

"Come on out wherever you are darling. I won't hurt you. I just wanna have a nice long chat with you, my beloved." My breathing became frantic. My heart was beating strongly against my ribcage, threatening to burst open. "I promise. I cross my heart and hope to die."

This isn't the man I have known and come to trust. He is a whole different person. It felt as though he had some some dark and inhuman creature lurking within him.

Something changed and it changed him as well.

"Okay, time's up." Something crashed with a loud thud few distance away from me, making my heart beat thrice as fast than normal. His thunderous-like voice penetrated the air once again. "I'm done playing nice. I'm sick of it. I've been all nice and sweet with you but you chose to play dirty and trust me, I'm all up for it. It makes the fun all the while better." Another loud crash disturbed the night, tears spilling down my eyes.

I had to get away. He was caving in, I could feel it. I had to change spots but then again, there was only a slight probability he wouldn't get to me first.

"Twinkle, twinkle little star. I want to put your head in a jar." He sang, trailing the ends of a metal rod along the concrete floors. "I'll go in our room in the night. Then, I'll behead you with my knife." He continued. The words spoken made my hairs stand on edge as I fought the urge to piss on myself.

My breath caught in my mouth when he slowly but menacingly passed me. I fought to hold my breath.

"You never told me you were good at this little game, my beloved." The lights flickered on and off consistently before going off completely. "What's it called again?" Silence creeped in but it didn't last long. Glasses crashed to the ground. My mouth betrayed me as I let out a small squeal, my hands instantly reaching my mouth as light sobs escaped my lips. "Hide and seek, is it?" He laughed once again. A strained 'ha, ha, ha'. The type that makes you cower away in fright. Then suddenly, he stopped, letting words out of his mouth again.

Only that, they weren't just words.

"Let me tell you a story, yeah? Would you love that? Either way, I'd tell. When I was a kid, I got no respect. I played hide and seek. They wouldn't even look for me. I got lost countless number of times and yet nobody found me. No one bothered to look for me, to search for me. I was all alone, hoping that someday, I'd be found. I hurt, I bled, I cried, I begged but the pain wouldn't still go away." His voice ran low, almost like inaudible whispers. I could note the pain in his voice, the suffering, the distress. It made me realise something.

I didn't know a thing whatsoever about him.

"I prayed and I hoped but it fell upon deaf ears. God looked elsewhere but alas, do you know who sorted me out? Do you know who looked for me?"

Then, his voice suddenly skyrocketed, screaming high pitched, pure anger and frustration imprinted into his chords. I gnashed my teeth as he roared, "do you know who found me? Do you know who saved me when they left me for dead? Do you know who kept me afloat while they left me to drown? You got any idea who kept me from losing it altogether, from going crazy till I lost it completely? Do you care to know, Aurora?" He screamed, going ballistic as loud echos of glasses, metals crashing, smashing onto the floor deafened my ears.

I cried. I was hurting. He was blazing mad. Like a raving lunatic. This was bizzare. I have never seen him act like this ever before. In fact, it was quite the opposite.

He made me feel right in all the wrong places the night before. How can someone change so completely in just one night. It made me believe he didn't change at all. This was him.

The real him.

Then suddenly, all was quite. Like nothing ever happened. The silent laid on my skin like a poison. It seeped into my blood, my pupils became dilated as a tremor relished in my hands.

The sound of the clock ticking could be heard nearby. I counted the seconds a long with it as the quietude grew deeper and I could hear my own steady rhythms from within. Then, hurried footsteps and the squeaking of a door brought my heart racing as fast as a gunshot.

He must be gone, he had to be gone or at least, very far away. I counted digits before temporarily discarding my hiding spot, peeking my head out first then, the rest of my body. However, I realized too late that I had misjudged the thick protective buffer of the absolute quiet as a falling glass shattered on the ground, causing me to jump in utter fear, twirling myself around.

"Peek-a-boo." I gasped,my eyes widened, threatening to bulge out from its sockets at the man standing in front of me. "I found you." A titter rippled across the otherwise silent room. It was a cruel mocking laugh. Shoulders shaking, tears streaming down his face.

All of a sudden, it seized. The air silent once again as his eyes gave a glare that froze my bones. His face void of any emotion. Fear gnashed my insides as I struggled to breathe.

He tilted his head to the right and left, a slight crack following up behind.

Eyes rigid, cold and stern, he snarled, "The chains on my mood swing just snapped, my beloved." Something flashed beneath the surface of his hardened expression and I hurried to investigate the cause of his sudden shift. It was too late. The emotion disappeared before I could identify it.

Then, he whispered, "Run."
