12 Mortal’s Persistence

YU LOOKED at the blinding fog in front of him as he moves forward. Fighting whatever's attacking him. Futile it may seem but it was alright as long as the attention of this God was on him.

"For my village! For Ayakawa!" He shouted as he closed his eyes and plunged with all of his might!

Then the next thing he knew, he was already floating in the air. He watched as the sky above was drawing close to his eyes. It was clear, no fogs, no blizzards. And before his body started to fall back, there he saw, two silhouettes above the cliff. They were like ice and snow. White as the snow and clear as the ice. They were looking down on him.

With that last image in his eyes, he felt the hard ground on his back. He felt he had coughed all of his insides as the blood spurted.

It may be true that your life passes by your eyes when you are nearing the end. He saw all of his friends who fought and died with him. His village. His sisters-in-law and brother-in-law. His Ayakawa.

This may be his last breath. He was seeing Ayakawa.

"Finally, I'd be able to reunite with you, Ayakawa." Yu called as he reached his hand and closed his eyes."

He chuckled when he saw Ayakawa's angry face. It was the same face she was making when he was complaining or he would give up and just get angry.

{Get up! Don't give up! Megumi and the others are waiting for you! Get up, Yu!}

That snapped Yu's eyes open. He was not there to just give up. Not now. Not yet.

He coughed again, more blood this time but the pain was too strong that he just felt numb. "You fool, we're almost together but you just kick me out," he said to himself as if still talking to Ayakawa. "And you, two foolish Gods. Do you think I didn't saw you? Why don't you get down from your throne and fight me? Hiding from that cliff is just cowardly. You call yourself Gods when all you do is bully us, humans!"

His lungs hurt more than before. He thinks he had broken most of his ribs, ruptured his lungs—no, probably all of his organs. His body was just in pure pain.

He closed his eyes again. Hoping that would just stop hurting.

{Ah, will this ever end? I want to go home.}

"Foolish, human."

Yu tried to open his eyes when he heard a voice. Then he saw two figures. He barely sees their faces as the blinding light of the sun made it harder to see them.

"Why not just die? Your lives are worthless. You die easily but crave far more than what the Gods will give. Disgusting creatures."

Yu just closed his eyes again as he shook his head. "To you, our lives may be worthless. But the anticipation of living and dying, that you Gods, will never understand. Pity that you have lived your life watching everything passed you by." Yu laughed as he had never laughed before.

He never expected that these Gods who were wreaking havoc in their lands were this pitiful. "If you have so much time in your hands. I suggest living the way we live. Maybe…by then…you will understand why humans…live like…this."

"Insolent fool!"

The last thing Yu did was laugh at the Gods who were staring down at him before he felt his body floating about and falling into the depths of the water.

{Ah. Maybe this is really the end.}

*******

SHINA looked at the body of the man that Naru was just thrown into the sea. Until the last moment, he was laughing at them. Despite what they did to him, he was still alive. Fighting.

He kept on shouting that the fight for his family. For Ayakawa.

"Why…do they still kept fighting for those people who abandoned them?" Shinavoiced out.

Naru looked at him. "Because they are that pathetic, sister."

But why does it feels like they were on the same boat? No—not even. "These mortals, they kept fighting over their lives. Still holding onto it just to save all those people in this land. Why? Why keep fighting for them when they left him behind? Shina doesn't understand, Naru."

Naru was just silent by his side. Both of them are new to this world. Not knowing how the world is. All they know was they want their mother back.

"I want to follow him," Shina then said.

Naru looked at her with shock. "I'm against it, Shina. It'll be dangerous if they found out that you are a Goddess, worst if they knew you were one of the reasons why their lands were ruined by the storm."

"No matter," she disregarded what her brother said. "Like what he said, we are Gods, deity, we don't easily die."

Naru just looked at his sister.

"It's painful. Here," Shina touched her chest. "It was painful when I learned that mother was locked up by that man but seeing this man struggle to live his life, it was p[ainful, too. What is this, brother?"

Her brother didn't answer again.

"I'm going to follow him, Naru," Shina said in her determined voice. She stepped forward from where the man was thrown out. "Are you coming with me?"

Naru looked at the vast sea. Calm and serene. Far from what it was when they started the storm. Was it always been that beautiful?

Naru sighed from what his mind was trading. "I'm coming with you, Shina. I cannot just leave you with those humans. I cannot still trust them."

Shina nodded at Naru. "I am, too. But I want to see what this man was bragging about. Does mortal life really that…interesting?"

Naru smirked. "And if it isn't?"

Shina just shrugged. "Then, we'll just have to end it."

Naru then thought, his sister is far scarier than him.
