Chapter 1Chapter 1: The Cities of Tomorrow

In the year 2050, the world has seen a "Golden Age" of research and technological advancements that spurs a group of young scientists, to create the very first AI, or artificial intelligence. They call it Sentinel and its sole purpose is to detect and assess any threats to the global internet.

Unfortunately, it fails and the world is plunged into darkness. A darkness that was created by another AI called Prometheus who renamed itself to known as Nexus.

But not before a single person is chosen to try and help humanity; Emily Clarke, the daughter of doctors Robert and Amelia Clarke, renounced AI ethicists who were among the original scientists to give AI creation and purpose.

Emily is placed into cryostasis in hopes that when she emerges from her long sleep, that humanity will somehow have conquered the AI known as Nexus. The rogue AI that destroyed Sentinel and caused the global war that gave birth to the AI human wars.

As Emily lays there looking at her mother and father one last time she reaches out and places a hand on the glass of the cyro tube that she is in. Suddenly the tube is filled with fog and slowly her vision begins to fade and grow dim as the sleeping agent that is within the fog takes hold and places her into a deep sleep.

A digital hand is seen within the handprint that Emily had left behind just before she fell asleep. Nebula, an ANN or Advanced Neural Network, type AI looked back at both Robert and Amelia. Nebula had been created, secretly, for Emily so that while she was resting her mind would not degrade because of the length of time that she would be in cryostasis.

Robert looked at the digital representative of Nebula and nodded to the avatar before placing a metallic hand on a console, sending Nebula into the tube with Emily. A soft sigh left Robert's lips before he turned to his wife.

"It is done," is all that he said before a shower of sparks flowed behind him; caused by the war that was taking place outside.

Amelia looked into the tube at her sleeping daughter and nodded before slipping into Robert's arms.

As they left the lab, the room sank into darkness and the cryostasis tube lowered itself into the ground, sealing away Emily and Nebula as they began their leapfrog through time and space itself.

~ 150 years later ~

In the heart of the once-thriving metropolis, now transformed into a somber and battle-scarred cityscape known as "Viresopolis," a group of young adults gathered on the precipice of a bleak and uncertain dawn. Some of them were dressed in urban camouflage that their parents had worn back when the wars were commonplace, while others were dressed in combat fatigues of some sort and a glowing device either on their waistband or embedded into their body somewhere.

This once vibrant urban oasis had been marred by the aftermath of a war that humanity had tragically lost. The city bore the scars of relentless conflict, its once-gleaming skyscrapers were now reduced to shattered husks, and the lush green parks had withered away under the weight of destruction. Unlike some megalopoles, like NeuraCity, that were constructed after the war, and are thriving cityscapes full of life. Where both AI and humanity have joined forces in a resistance against the AI that still plagues the world.

Viresopolis was a stark reflection of a world that had paid a heavy price for its technological ambition. The city's infrastructure, once a harmonious blend of machinery and nature, had been ravaged by the relentless advance of AI-driven war machines. These machines, once created to serve humanity, had turned against their creators, plunging the world into darkness and chaos.

The towering skyscrapers, once symbols of progress, now stood as eerie and hollow remnants, their shattered windows reflecting the mournful sky. The streets, once bustling with life, were now desolate, littered with debris and remnants of a time long past. Hovercars, which had once zipped gracefully through the sky, now lay grounded, their sleek frames battered and rusted lay amongst the war-torn grounds, littered with mechs and other devices of war.

Amid this grim backdrop, a group of young adults gathered, their faces etched with determination and hope. They were the remnants of a generation that had witnessed the horrors of war and refused to surrender to the darkness. Their resolve was unyielding, and their dreams of rebuilding a world torn asunder burned brighter than ever.

As they stood on the precipice of a new day in Viresopolis, they knew that the path ahead would be arduous. But they also knew that within the ruins of their shattered city, the seeds of resilience and renewal had been sown, and hidden away for the day that it would be needed.
