“I think you’re right,” the elf laughed.

Tuxtax grew serious. “I’m not going to get the tree pregnant, am I? We’re not going to wake up and find an acorn baby in our nest? I’m asking because I don’t mind, but I’d just like to know.”

Alec blushed. “No. Nothing like that.”

“I just—I’m not sure what to expect. There are no elves where I’m from.”

Alec grew quiet.

Tuxtax sensed Alec’s hurt. “What’s wrong? Tell me.”

“I don’t even know if the egg your sister and I shared is viable.”

“Nonsense! I’m sure your egg will be fine. I worry if Em and El are compatible.”

Tuxtax sighed. “Me, too.” He opened his mouth to say more, but a yawn erupted from it instead.

“It’s all right,” Alec murmured. “Let’s go back to sleep. We have a lifetime to catch up.”

Tuxtax nodded sleepily, clutching Alec to his furry chest. 9

Tuxtax woke chilled. Despite his utter exhaustion, the emptiness of the nest frightened him

“Alec?” he called out, unsure.
