“Do you know this human, Ellie?” Mal still had the guard’s flesh between his teeth when he asked his question, red blood staining his muzzle. He could scent the discomfort from my being likely because even as wild as he looked, he edged toward me with a certain passivity like I was the unpredictable animal ready to bolt. “He said he was—”
“He isn’t.” My wings fanned out, eyeing the true danger, Melania. She was a half-breed like myself, but I was never sure of what. Just that her Fae linage had given her an unnaturally beautiful face that never moved; her lips could part enough to speak, but it gave the allusion of someone pantomiming for her. That coupled with her segmented joints made her seem more toy than a living creature. It was unnerving, to say the least. “Don’t listen to a word that lie-smith says!”
