1 In the beginning

"In the beginning there was nothing but darkness. Then God created light and separated them both and both were good."

When I wake up all I i see is darkness. There is no light except when the guards walk buy with torches. That's okay though there is nothing in here for me to see anyway. I get up off the floor and walk ten steps to the bars on my cell the same way that I have done every day all the way back when I can remember. It is so dark that I can't see my hand in front of my face. As I rest my face on the cool bars I hear somebody moving in front of me. "David get up!" , "Ugh!" David says as he moves to his feet and reaches the bars to his cell. "Why do I have to get upright now? Nobody is here and there isn't any food." "Because," I say " I have the feeling that today will be different, I think today we will be able to see something amazing!" "Shut up! some people are still trying to sleep! And Zahir, you say that every time we wake up and nothing ever happens." "Well today will be different I know it." As I continue to lean against the bars in silence I hear the sound of footsteps approaching from the left of the hallway. As the steps got louder the more light that began to show. I could now see the rock walls that made up my cell and the metal bars that kept me contained. I could also see my friend David across from my cell who was sitting on the floor. David was a pretty big guy with wide shoulders and long limbs. As the light grew brighter I could see his eyes getting more narrow due to his eyes adjusting to the light and he scratches his head as he combed his fingers through his thick matted hair. Finally the steps stop and we all hear a whistle being blown. "EVERYBODY BACK AWAY FROM THE BARS! iT'S TIME TO EAT!" I step to the back of the wall and sit on the floor waiting to get my food. As the guard passed my cell he threw the food on the ground making a big PLOP sound. When he got to the end He exclaimed "YOU CAN EAT NOW YOU DEGENERATES!" I hurriedly began to eat my food off the ground. It didn't really taste like anything but I never really had anything else. As I finished up I sat back on the ground and put my face on the cool bars again hoping for something to change. As I sat on the floor I reminisced on the stories that Jah used to tell me through the crack in the wall. He used to tell me that we were extraordinary people with unbelievable powers and that's why we were kept here. "They are scared of what we might become." Eventually I stopped hearing from him. I don't know what happened to him but I miss him. I hope he was right that we are extraordinary and that we have powers. I asked David and Nala about it but they just laughed. David said " If we have powers why aren't we able to break ourselves out of here?? And how did we get put in here in the first place? Stop dreaming." I never talked about it again but I still hope that it's true. As I sat there thinking about what Jah had told me I hear a loud BANG! From above my head. I couldn't see anything but I felt dust fall on my head and I began to worry. I called out to David and Nala to see if they were ok but I didn't get a response. As I sat and waited in my cell I heard screams and more explosions and I became more and more anxious. The screams and explosions continued to get louder and closer until I could see the light from them. I heard one last scream and then somebody said "THEY ARE IN HERE!" I gasped at that statement thinking "who are they talking about? It can't be us!" I immediately heard fast paced foot steps and was blinded by the most light that I have ever seen. I closed my eyes so that I wouldn't have to deal with it. I started to hear loud scraping noises coming from next to and across from my cell. Then I heard the sound on my bars and then I felt something shaking me. I opened my eyes and as they adjusted I saw a large man with hazel eyes, a beard, and long twisted hair. He said to me "Let's go." "Where" I replied, confused as to what he meant I had never left my cell where is there to go? The big man said "To see the light!" He helped me onto my feet and dusted me off. I glanced around and there were 5 other people there. There was a short, thick, muscular man with a bandana around his head, a dark skinned woman with thick puffy hair, another taller and light woman with long twisted up hair like the man and two tan men who looked exactly the same. As I saw them I recognized David brushing the dust off himself and not really saying much of anything just staring in awe at the people who had broken our bars. I looked for Nala but I had never been able to see her before would I recognize her? Just then a dusty girl came from around the corner. She was shorter than me and very slender built. Her hair was long and curly and went down to her shoulders. I heard her cough and say "What's going on?" "Nala?" I asked unsure as to if it was her. She looked at me and said "Zahir?" "We don't have time for all of these questions let's go!" Said the lighter skinned woman. "We don't have much time!" The big man in front of me asked "Can you run?" Unsure as to whether I could or not, I didn't answer I just stared at him confused as to what was going on. He then looked to the two men who looked the same and said "Get us out of here." and all of a sudden everything was dark again.
