6 Chapter 5: No toys, only gadgets and weapons

Seeing Akemi leave the manor and take a taxi, Ran asks him. ''Are you sure we can trust her?''

''Yes I am. She has no other choice because her lover is currently undercover inside the organization and unable to help her. She only has herself and us now.'' Explains Conan, already thinking how he can support Akemi when she meets Gin and Vodka. -The best thing would be one of these guns from those movies. Sniper rifles I guess they are called nowadays.-

''What are you thinking?'' Asks Agasa seeing Conan's thinking expression.

''I was thinking that it would be great if we head a gun and a rife,'' Conan tells the inventor.

''Do you plan on killing someone?'' Asks Ran, a bit disrupted by the idea of her lover killing anybody.

''They are just for insurance purposes. I don't want Akemi more you get killed by these dangerous criminals.'' Conan explains while looking questioningly at Agasa.

Seeing Conan look the Professor confesses. ''I might have something for you guys for insurance purposes.''

Leading the two of them to his house and into his laboratory Agasa at first shows them another one of his latest inventions.

Seeing the watch Conan is momentarily unable to contain his excitement and blurs out. ''Stun-Gun Wristwatch!'' -Why am I so excited? Are there parts of the boy still remaining inside of me?-

Totally surprised by Conan's outburst the professor curiously asks. ''How do you know?''

''What is a 'Stun-Gun Wristwatch'?'' Asks Ran, still looking at the watch Agasa is still holding.

Having found an easy to impress public in Ran the old man instantly begins to boast. ''This right here is my latest invention the Stun-Gun Wristwatch. It uses a tranquilizer dart in the watch to put people to sleep. One must be very accurate as it can only carry one dart in the watch at a time.''

''Year, create a nice toy, but I don't want a toy but gadgets and weapons. Preferably a gun?'' Comments Conan, knowing that the old man surely must have one.

''You really are a pain in the ass, Conan!'' Says Agasa handing each of the two of them a Stun-Gun Wristwatch, Conan's a mainly silver and Tans in a womanly rose-gold.

After both of them have thanked the Professor for the watch they are lead down some stairs into the old man's basement.

Going down some stairs Conan, as well as Ran, are both surprised to find a massive steel door sealing the entrance to the basement.

Opening the door via a keypad, Agasa leads the two of them in while explaining. ''I hope you tell nobody about this. These things are from my time at the WRD project (weapons research and development project). The WRD was started shortly after WWII, so I have here older and new inventions stashed down here.''

With the door opened Ran and Conan are unable to contain their astonishment, because the whole basement is one huge armory, full of all kinds of guns, rifles, ammunition, and other warfare weaponry.

''When were you working for the WRD?'' Asks Ran curiously, but her question remains unanswered.

Rummaging around in a stack of handguns Agasa presents one to Ran and Conan, proudly explains. ''This right here is a modified Hamada Type 1 pistol. It shoots caliber 7.65 mm Tranquillizer bullets. Recoil operated and with a locked breech it, this gun takes its basic design from the Model 1910 Browning used in WWII. The muzzle velocity is 300m/s (984ft/s) and the detachable box magazine has to room for 6-rounds.''

''Great. Ran this weapon should go well with your martial arts moves, so you take it...'' Says Conan and lets Ran take the handgun. ''... Now, Professor, I need something similar but with much more range.''

Looking a bit troubled Agasa takes out two rifles from a rifle stand, explaining. ''I don't know which one would suit a seven-year-old. Both rifles are capable of firing bullets and tranquilizer darts...'' Pointing at the gun with the wooden stock he sais. ''... This one is a modified M40A2 which shoots 7.65mm NATO rounds or similar sized tranquilizer bullets...'' Pointing at the one with a black stock the elaborates. ''... this one is a similarly modified Type 97 which uses 6.5x50mm Arisaka or tranquilizer bullets of the same size.''

''Are the 7.65m NATO the same size as Rand 7.65m?'' Asks Conan, thinking. -Size does matter.-

Knowing what Conan is thinking Agasa says. ''I guess should be the same size. So what are you taking?''

Smiling evil Conan says. ''Good, then we take the modified Hamada Type 1 for Ran and the modified M40A2 as well as two magazine's for each, one tranquilizer one regular bullet.''

''Sounds good. I will run the point and you give me cover. Now it comes in handy, that I already have a gun license. Oh and Professor please don't forget a scoop for the rifle.''

Just when the three of them are going upstairs the telephone just starts ringing. Once again Ran takes the call.

''Men it is as if you two are already married.'' Hears Conan Agasa say behind Conan.

Smirking back at the inventor Conan says. ''I am counting on that.''

''Good for you. Let me first show you how to disassemble, assemble and how to use the rifle properly.

With that said Agasa and Conan sit down in the library, working on the rifle. Conan is really impressed by how refined gunpowder weapons have become. Having fond memories about dueling disgruntled husbands and fiancees with rapier and flintlock, only now he knows how barbaric these 'civilized' rituals from his past life truly had been.

''This right here is a typical the bolt consists of a tube of metal inside of which the firing mechanism is housed, and which has at the front or rear of the tube several metal knobs, or 'lugs', which serve to lock the bolt in place...'' Agasa explains pointing out every part of the complicated mechanism. ''... The operation can be done via a rotating bolt, a lever, cam-action, locking piece, or a number of systems. Straight-pull designs have seen a great deal of use, though manual turn-bolt designs are what is most commonly thought of in reference to a bolt-action design due to the type ubiquity. As a result, the bolt-action term is often reserved for more modern types of rotating bolt-designs when talking about a specific weapon's type of action. However, both straight-pull and rotating bolt rifles are types of bolt-action rifles.''

Feeling his head spin with ever new term Conan asks pleading. ''Please just show me how to shoot.''

Shortly after the two finish their rifle talk, Ran comes running in the library shouting. ''A man was found dead in a hotel. The police think it was Akemi. She by the way also called. She is about to meet with some agents of the organization down at the docks to exchange money for her sister.''

''Her sister is a way to valuable for them to let go off. She is definitely going into a trap. Let's make sure that she gets out of it alive...'' Conan says while storing the rifle in a backpack, kindly provided by Agasa before getting interrupted by Agasa.

''Are you sure about all this? Isn't this part a job better-taken care of by the police?'' Asks Agasa.

''It is already too late for us to get the police involved. No, we can and will do it. If all goes to shit we can then ask the police for help.''
