103 A Beast That Looked Human

They didn't shout orders but they instinctively protected each other and moved without being told what to do. It was really amazing...

Mizuki Rei who had just recently reunited with them had already integrated himself with his friends as if they have been battling together since the start of the apocalypse.

Lilian Mo could not be angry at this since he was originally part of Lu Jingren's team and she had only kept him close for Mu Qingqing's sake.

This was not the first time she had seen Lu Jingren fight. She might be bitter against him but she was not stupid. Lu Jingren was truly a capable fighter. She could see the shadow of his previous life in him right now.

He did not stop as he ruthlessly attacked the half-mutant, ignoring its piercing shrieks as if he heard nothing. He swung his swordlike hands that were covered in ice without any signs of stopping.

While doing so, he had also gathered more moisture in the air and produced more ice needles. Those ice needles broke through the air, faster than bullets, and once again embedded themselves on the half-mutant's skin, drawing more and more dark blood that dropped on the ground.

The half-mutant now resembled a very large pincushion because not only did it possess red skin but its skin was also embedded with those many needles. Some were melted by its lightning ability while others remained in their place.

Mu Qingqing had closed in on Lilian Mo and was just as equally surprised at what she was seeing. "Momo, I thought he was just a pretty boy but he's even more relentless than you!" She could not help but say while watching this.

Lilian Mo did not respond to that. Mu Qingqing has a point. Were the girls even needed?

She felt that it was ridiculous that she had worried when the guys were fairing better on their own and with Lu Jingren's participation, the half-mutant was already losing since it relied so much on its physical strength and rarely used its lightning ability. If it knew how to use it, then the guys would need a little help from them.

Zhang Youji on the other hand, trembled, his eyes had tears as he watched his Mom fighting with the handsome big brother's team and he was also aware that she was losing. He was crying for his Mom because he felt relieved that she would finally stop hurting others once defeated but he was also crying because his Mom wouldn't stop calling for him.

He sniffed.

Lin Jiaojiao saw this and was distressed.

"Xiao Ji, don't be sad. Big sister is here for you." She crouched down and wrapped her arms around Zhang Youji.

The child tensed up but Lin Jiaojiao merely thought that the child was surprised by her actions. She did not know that because of making physical contact with him and allowing her skin to touch his, she had allowed him to read her thoughts and memories.

As Zhang Youji's ability was still weak, he could only read the person's current thoughts and their recent memories. If he wanted to find out more, it would take a lot of time and would use up a lot of his mental power. He had already used it too much after making contact with three people but it still activated, regardless if he had the energy or not.

He slackened in her embrace as Lin Jiaojiao's memories leaked towards him without warning.

In his mind's eyes, he could see people and a room so dark, he almost thought he was blind. A person's mind was unique to them so he was no longer surprised to see the unusual interior.

"Big brother, where are you?"

"Big brother! Big brother! Please help me! Help me! Somebody!"

'Tired.... so tired...'

'Who is that?'

"Big sister Mo, thank you."

'I am weak. I don't want to be a burden. It's so shameful...'

'Poor child.'

Pain.

He felt pain in his heart.

And his body.

Zhang Youji became silent and his tears stopped flowing.

The memories of the big sister that was embracing him overwhelmed him and he did not know how to react to it. He had seen many things, many people killing each other and robbing others but he had never seen someone being...

His face scrunched up.

Now he understood why his Big sister Mo became angry when he mentioned the handsome big brother.

He quickly pulled away from Lin Jiaojiao and turned his back, vomiting the contents of his stomach. This action made Lin Jiaojiao panicked as she patted the child's back, soothing him as he threw up what little amount of food his stomach had.

"Oh no, Xiao Ji.." Mu Qingqing noticed and quickly ran towards Zhang Youji as she was also panicking when the child retched. It can be said that females are maternal creatures and would naturally worry whenever a young child is suffering.

This seized Lilian Mo's attention.

She was prepared to head over when the half-mutant's piercing scream resounded, stopping her in her tracks.

This scream was louder and contained more strong vibrations which had stunned them. It made the others who were closer, bleed from their ears.

Lu Jingren pursed his lips as the shockwave drew him back a few meters. He was unscathed except for some minor cuts on his shoulders and arms. He had quickly covered those with ice, not wanting to bleed out.

The half-mutant's body crackled with lightning, its beady red eyes turned towards Zhang Youji's direction. It had now completely ignored Lu Jingren as its eyes set on its child. It was half-mutant but it still knows that its child was hurt and this caused it more distress than the attacks and wounds it had received from the ice-wielding human.

It howled loudly. "Xiao Ji!"

The guys' expressions had changed.

If they didn't know any better, they would have thought that the half-mutant was letting out an aggrieved howl for its child. They were not entirely wrong but in their eyes, this half-mutant was not capable of such emotion and was merely a beast that looked human. Since the apocalypse, they had seen many people turn into mutated creatures that had lost their humanity, and even if this one can talk, it was the same as the others who tried to attack and kill them.

They did not feel pity for it.
