Chapter 1Chapter 1 - Beginning.

It was a long hardworking day in the coffee shop, busy roads, customers flooding, always the same ever since the coffee shop has been open. They came and go, within time back for another dose. It always had been like that. Usually just busy people getting a coffee to go, or college adults wanting to have a nice hang out, teenagers going out for fun, or families that needed a nice vacation break.

I've always seen their smiles whenever I brought them their orders. Either it's stern, cold looks or happy cheery smiles, they all came for more. I was proud of my work, I believed that no one can best as much regulars in my shop. I was boosted by the popularity and happy successful customers.

That day I lost my shop.

They demand I signed that contact, I completely denied it of course. I wanted to prove that my shop is perfect, nothing can sabotage my reputation, every customer I knew and had knows too.

But I lost to a simple bribe.

I slammed my apartment door. Holding on to the poster of my once beloved coffee shop. I couldn't convince the judge, but I knew they had something to do with it. They were snakes, fucking sick bastards. I was completely devastated. I didn't know what to do, I cried the harsh tears inside, damping the poster's beautiful tares.

My reputation, my whole work, my life. All crushed in a single order. I was depressed for weeks. My family heard the news, tried comforting me. My friends concerned, checking on me.

I wanted none of them.

I want my shop back.

I'll make sure to get it.

Nathan was running late, he quickly jumps on the elevator in time, the people around him got annoyed by his sudden quick enter as their time was ticking. Nathan apologized for the inconvenience, letting the thick air calm down when the elevator music started.

It was his new job at the company, he's hopeful because he passed the interview last week and they accepted him in eagerly. He was excited about his new employment, with the high paycheck and his new co-workers.

As soon as they got to the 3rd floor he speeds up his pace, dashing out and slides right in front of the office door, with the sign of his company.

'Ok, you're here! It's perfectly 6 am just like your boss expected. Ok, neck tie? Check! Clean button up white shirt, black jeans and a coat? Check! Good morning hair? Check! And a bag incase I have more paperwork then normal? Check! The confidence before getting crushed by your new boss? Check!'

As Nathan was overthinking also energized with a good boost of adrenaline. Once he opened the door he could see the depression around him bursting out from the wind of the breezy air conditioner. Everyone in the office doesn't even bother to look at him, they're all busy with their computer and paperwork to even acknowledge his existence in the office. Men are in their 30s-50s looking depressing and greasy with their stuffy noses and black eye bangs, women in their 30-40s are just gossiping or overworking while going around bossing others. There are a few young people but most were crushed by reality of the harsh place, like the guy over there on the other side looked like he was fresh out of college before looking older then Nathan himself. The young woman who's attractive tends to overload the simps working for her and for the less charismatic they're probably having sleep deprivation from the over exhausted air. Nathan was in his 20s, he's perfectly 27 years old, used to work in a simple job till now in a new position with great ambitions. Which most of the workers are betting on his soon to be dreaded face.

Which so he holds no hesitation as he introduces himself to them.

"Hello everyone! My name is Nathan, I'm going to be working on the financial corner of our company and I hope to be helped and taken care of by the seniors! I'm very excited to be your new co-worker and I'm hoping to be friends!" He said in his cheerful tone, his voice full of excitement.

Nobody answered him back. He stood there awkwardly long as most of them snicker at his innocence. When a stern looking man walks over to him. He was shorter then Nathan a few inches, his bushy mustache and his bald head could clearly tell who's the boss here. A name tag of his expensive looking suit with his nice watch on his other hand behind his back.

"Nathan right? The new employee ? I'm Fern. You could call me Mr. Fern or Sir." He greeted with a smile, well more like a mocking one then a friendly one like Nathan's. "You young boy are perfect! Your post should be right at the corner over there, next to the break room. If you need to ask for anything, don't bother, it would be denied."

Everyone in the office watches Nathan marched over to his place, well, hardly a place. It was messy, smell of burnt coffee and disgusting looking trash. The last guy wasn't such hygienist it seems. The corner has a vent under the table , which the heat from outside would go through, making it easier to sweat from the intense heat. There was loads of unfinished paperwork and coffee mugs placed everywhere, most of them looked trashed. No wonder why they're paying high for this.

"Oh, the payment was a lie, you'll probably get just a nice cut like the rest of the others. Make sure to keep that smile! You'll need it." Mr. Fern laughs cruelly before leaving with a nice looking woman. People around are already starting to pity him, his smile getting slightly crooked.

"Well... I'm sure next to the break room is a good thing right? Snacks and drinks?..." Nathan said cheery. He doesn't wanna enter it just yet. It'll probably crush him again with reality if it wasn't what he'd like to imagine off, especially with the state he's in now. But he holds no grudge. He simply sat down and got dirty mud on his perfectly washed clothes. A nice gift for a new employee.

It was hell.

Not only the unfinished paperwork from before is still having a deadline, he's been tricked to getting extra for his 'hard-work'. His calculations on the expenses and finance of the place was just full of high numbers of random purchases. The time he asked for his co-workers if anyone else is in charge of the numbers, the only one reason from them is 'it's your work corner, you should've known by now' like that wasn't even an answer!

Till 5th time he was crushed by reality, it was already lunch break. Though nobody enters the break room, which not only confuses him but concerns him even more. He was about to open the door as the first before someone stopped him.

"New here?" They grumbled from behind, making him flinch.

The voice sounded angry and annoyed, not to mention super, super impatient. Nathan quick step back and apologized immediately, saying he was the new financial guy and didn't want to upset the person. It was some decent looking man, at least. He had messy little long black hair tide behind as a ponytail. His eyes looks like he's been awake for days, his teeth are perfect just slightly yellow, and he has a little beard, probably because he doesn't shave in the morning so often. He looks super angry, which Nathan gets even more afraid.

"Move." The man said, which Nathan quickly did. As Nathan took another quick look from the man's back.

As soon as he entered. The other workers began standing up and followed too. One of the girl came over to Nathan and quietly explained the situation.

"That's Thomas. He's a grumpy guy in his 40s. The day I got here and accidentally went in before him, he gave me trouble, a lot of trouble and it ended up getting my paycheck cut twice! Careful around his temper, I heard he's been like this for a few years. They don't know the cause but he's awful..." She informed him which Nathan understands. Not a good guy, got it.

Inside the break room it was more of a battlefield. The people around are annoyed and tried, immediately sleeping not caring if it was next to each other on the limited spaced couch. Those who had their lunch are mostly bean cans or instant food cooked undone in a concerning health issues microwave. Those who wanted coffee had to stand in line, waiting for long minutes because Thomas was using the single coffee machine in the middle of the dirty kitchen table, very, very slowly. Nathan waited for ages, hoping some gave up and went back to work, which is the awesome opportunity for Nathan to go around the people who's distracted and stood behind Thomas.

The moment he step behind Thomas from the constant pressure, he froze. That smell of coffee, a nice brief yet it smells great. The coconut milk added and a nice sound of a single spoon tapping against the cup, Nathan was instantly hooked.

"Wow, you're making that coffee??" Nathan instantly spoke due to his nature.

Everyone in the room froze. Some of them immediately spooked from their slumber. They quickly slowly left, makes Nathan gets nervous if he did something very wrong.

"Yes. I'm making my coffee." Thomas answered in the most bone chilling way, which Nathan almost lost his breath to.

"S-So... you're a coffee e-expert?..." Nathan said in a cheery tone, trying to ease the situation of accidentally ending himself.

"... You could say that. Boy." Thomas grumbled the last part. Nathan was sure he's fucked up about it.

Well. At least he had a fulfilling life. The way Thomas looked at him was filled with disgust and annoyance , not a good start. But the coffee smelled perfect. It makes Nathan sip his drool, wiping it away with his sleeves. Thomas then step away from the coffee machine.

"I'm done." He spoke, holding his perfectly hot coffee outside the room.

Nathan watches the display before realizing it's his turn for coffee. As soon as he pick a mug, it was work time, making him lost his first coffee in the office. He dreadfully went back to work without his coffee time, giving goodbyes to the machine as he went back to work.

-

Night came and he was laying on the dirty table, still trying to type the amount of hundreds of work on his desk. It was 9 PM, they're supposed to go hone by now, but most likely stayed in and continued their work. Nathan was about to shout and jump off, going home. But he spots Thomas  also about to walk out.

He was a curious guy when he was little, so he wasted no time packing up and went over behind Thomas. His old man vibes and his non-ringed finger that guy is definitely forever single due to him getting grumpy on every women in the office and hate for others. Surprisingly Nathan and Thomas went on the sane route, ending them up together in the same elevator.

"...You really like coffee?..." Nathan said, noticing the thick smell of coffee in the air around them, and trying to break the silence.

Thomas didn't answer yet, he was probably thinking about something.

"Yes. I do. Got a problem?" That wasn't really a response Nathan expected but he shook his head.

"No no- I'm also a coffee fan! Though I prefer sweets, a good bitter drink helps lots! Ayyy coffee buddies!" Nathan said, giving a smile which was crushed when Thomas said "Whatever, Boy."

"I have a name too! It's Nathan." Nathan said, huffing at this rude man. What a bastard.

"Well, Nathan. It seems we should be leaving." Thomas said coldly, stepping out the elevator and left Nathan there standing dumbfounded.

"Go home, it's dangerous at night." Is slightly heard from a faraway distance.
