6 Chapter Six: Underestimated

Jade still had her hand in Derik's, and he was still dragging her along behind him. Jade wasn't too aware of her surroundings, her mind was too occupied.

'What. The. Hell. Happened.'

She stared at the back of Derik's head, her mind reeling, but quickly regaining its thought process.

'Incubus. Class Three Demon. Not as dangerous as a True Demon, but still deadly to a human. They survive on the sexual activity of humans, preferably female. They gain physical strength from sex, and their mental abilities are mostly invading dreams.'

Derik stopped suddenly and dropped Jade's hand. He turned on her and looked her directly in the eyes.

"Forget you know anything." He said, deadly serious.

"What?" Jade asked, incredulous.

"You heard me. Forget it." He said again.

"No. Why? This information could help stop it!" Jade said, glaring at him.

"No! The police can't know." Derik said.

His reply came quick, and Jade looked at him suspiciously.

"What's going on." She said in her no-nonsense voice.

"What-" Derik began, but Jade cut him off.

"You know what I mean. What. The fuck. Is going. On." She said, separating her sentence to make her intent on finding the truth out, clear.

Derik sighed, looked at the sky, then the ground, then back to her.

"More than you could ever know." He said reluctantly, sadness in his eyes.

"Tell me." Jade persisted.

"You can't do anything," Derik said.

"Try me." Jade countered, her eyes narrowing. "I've dealt with more Demon shit than you think, what's some more?"

Derik stayed silent, pinching the bridge of his nose as if he had a headache. Jade didn't lessen up. She knew she should've just walked away. Gone straight to her dad, told him what she saw, and be done with it. But something made her stay. And it wasn't the irresistible Demon in front of her.

"Class will start again soon, and you haven't had lunch yet," Derik said, changing the subject.

As if on cue, Jade's stomach growled, but she ignored it, refusing to budge.

"Derik." She said, her eyes slits.

He ignored her, turning his back to her and taking a few steps away. This made her blood boil, and she grabbed his wrist, and in one swift motion, shoved him against the wall.

"Don't ignore me." She said, her voice nearly a growl.

Derik's eyes seemed to grow darker, as he pushed against her and broke free, only to turn and pin Jade against the same wall.

"And don't forget who you're talking to. I told you to leave it." He growled, cold radiating from his body.

She was intimidated, but not afraid. Rather than fear, warmth radiated through her, their closeness making her excited. But she replied in an equally cool voice.

"Don't tell me what to fucking do."

They stayed like that for a few minutes, neither giving in to the others persistence, although Jade was at a major disadvantage, being smaller than Derik, and human.

Finally, Derik let her go. He turned and began to walk away. He was almost out of the alley, that Jade had just realized they were in when she called out to him.

"Don't forget, I'm a third-generation Demon Hunter, the daughter of the best. Don't even think of underestimating me."

Derik didn't reply, he didn't even seem to acknowledge her. He just kept walking, putting his hands in his jean pockets as he left.

'Fucking Demons.'

Jade let her heart get a normal rhythm before she left as well, certain there was enough time to get home and get something to eat before she had to be in class. If she ran.

Jade ran into the school, out of breath. She had only had time to grab an apple and eat that, then get back to school. The entire time, her mind was stuck on Derik.

'He knows something about that Incubus.'

Jade grabbed a new notebook and her schedule and headed to her next class. She sat in the seat the teacher indicated and waited for Derik. Except, Derik never showed. Either their classes didn't match this time, or he was playing hooky. Whatever the reason, Jade was put into a dark mood. She wasn't done with Derik. He needed to tell her what he knew. Or else she'd... She'd do what?

'He's a motherfucking Demon, how the hell would I get anything out of him?'

She sighed, rested her head against her locker, and closed her eyes for a minute. After school let out, she'd go directly to the station, as she should've at lunch. If anyone could deal with this problem, her father would. He wasn't called the best Demon Hunter in the world just for fun.

Settling on this plan, Jade headed to her last class of the day, feeling determined and eager to leave the school.

The final bell rang, and Jade headed to her locker. She didn't have to dodge the other students, they all avoided her.

'Great. Was it my name, or my personality this time?'

She opened her locker to grab her bag when a small paper fluttered out.

'Wonderful. A note.'

She had half a thought to tear it up and throw it away, but she didn't. Instead, she stuck it in her pocket and headed out of the school. She planned to read it at home, safe from the prying eyes of jokers and jerks.

'High school, always the same.'

Jade walked in silence, her music playing through her earbuds. She was walking by some roadside food carts, and the smell made her stomach growl, reminding her she needed some real food when she got home. She made a mental list, a habit of hers whenever she had too many emotions running through her at once.

'One: Eat. Two: Read the note. Three: Do homework. Four: Go to the station.'

She specifically ignored the fact that she had going to the station last. Something inside didn't feel right. Telling her dad was just...wrong. It shouldn't have been, but her gut was telling her not to tell him. And what her father loved to say was,

"Go with your gut, it saves more Hunters than a bullet ever will."

And boy was her gut screaming, "Don't tell dad!"
