Rafaela listened a little incredulously to Brendan's description of the amount of control he had over which memories would be written into his child's genes, and the extent to which the one who carried the King's libraries could edit the contents of the cells he produced for reproduction.
Brendan wondered if it sounded stilted. He found himself having to fight to speak openly about the subject. It reinforced his desire to have the capability to read the memories into an artificial system that would not force you to feel the emotions stored with the knowledge.
Generations of cautions surrounded every word. A distant Aldrich ancestor had been the one who made the modifications to his own genes, which had created the King's inheritance system, long before this system had been settled. The man had lived long before the position of King had existed here.
