6 Chapter 6 - The Companion (2)

Oscar's eyes widened in amazement.

"You were right. So many amazing things I could pick!"

"So what are your stats? And what skills did you pick?"

"Oh right they were-

Name : Oscar Lobo

"And I picked the skill 'Bulls Eye', It lets me accurately aim ranged attacks, and I also chose an active skill 'Stun'. I think it can help us in team fights. It lets me freeze an opponent for a small time. Should be enough for you to get an edge and spear them"

"That's a smart choice but you still need to have a way for you to defend yourself. Why didn't you pick on?"

"Oh I think my intelligence and level was too low to pick any good offensive skill and I feel we should work as a team and try to fill each other's gaps. You've already started on the path of up close physical combat so I should start working on being ranged support and control"

I raised my brows up from his suggestion. It did sound like a good tactic but it also meant that Oscar gave up on a chance to pick something that will protect him. 'He's too trusting for his own good'. We've just met and he's trusting me with his life already.

"Pick a defensive and offensive skill on your next level up, you're being too naive. My power is limited and we have no idea what sort of dangers are around us. This is not a game where you can be wizard now and a swordsman the other time if you die. If some accident happens its permanent"

Oscar thought about my words for a bit then nodded.

"I'll take your suggestion and do that but you can see my base stats aren't the best. If I want to be of use in this partnership I'll have to pick a good supporting role. I still feel having a specialized skill set will be better than being an average warrior."

"Alright well let's get you leveled up quickly then."

----------

We spent the next half an hour hunting small fry to get Oscar to level up. It became extremely easy for me to fight and incapacitate beasts with his 'Stun', I simply had to poke their legs once they froze. Soon he was Level 3 and his stats were, as told by him:

Oscar had listened to me at first but then had adamantly used tqo skill points to level up 'Stun'. And the energy bullet would serve more as a distraction than do actual harm when hitting an opponent but I felt that was Oscar's aim anyway. The shield however was pretty good, it took five of my full power spear stabs to shatter.

It was almost midday now and we had just killed a boar to get him to level up. We realized that the both of us were extremely hungry so we paused our level grinding to eat some food. We decided to cook some of the boar meat but fire was a major problem. We didn't want to attract any unwanted attention for us.

I had spent a lot of time trekking and camping so I knew a few things about bushcraft and surviving in the wilderness. We cut off a lot thin pieces of meat from the boar ,the kind which would be easy to cook and eat without utensils. The knife came in really handy here. Then we went away from the spot as hanging around a carcass smelling of blood wasn't the smartest thing to do in a jungle such as this. We dug a small firepit under a large tree with plenty of leaves and branches. We then filled it with a lot of dried wood and set it on fire. The leaves of the tree worked to dissipate the smoke so it didn't cause a smoke trail and the pit made the fire less visible. Oscar cast a fire bullet to start the fire.

The next step was to hide and hope that no strong animal shows up. We climbed a tree close by and waited, I had my Ranger skill on at all times. Thankfully nothing showed up and the fire slowly died, leaving hot embers. We quickly jumped down from the tree and put the thin pieces of meat on the embers.

Soon the meat started giving a delicious aroma and was ready to eat. Although there was no seasoning or bread to go along with it we still quickly wolfed it down. Such was our hunger and exhaustion from having to be so cautious of everything.

With our bellies now full and having had some water from a nearby stream we were ready to explore more of the jungle and maybe even find more people.
