5 Chapter 5 - The Companion

As my vision came back I saw a figure jump down from the tree. It was a lanky young guy, perhaps only a year or two older than me. He had black hair and a square jaw. His face was also adorned with the most miserable moustache I had ever seen. His clothes were the sort worn by inner city hipsters. A red flannel shirt and extra slim jeans. The clothes however looked pretty worn out with fresh tears and lots of grime on them. Our friend had had a tough time since he got here it seems.

"Oh my god! You killed it?" he exclaimed.

He was bleeding from his thigh. It seemed the boar had gored him. He briskly walked up to the carcass and gave it a few kicks with his good leg and then grimaced when he agonized his injury.

"Can't believe I was almost done in by Bacon. Hey, thank you mate. You know what's going on here?" He then turned his attention towards me.

I shrugged and spoke, "I know as much as you do. Closed my eyes for a bit and next thing I knew I was being attacked by filthy goblins. Anyway, I'm Eden and you are?".

I outstretched my hand to shake his. He stared at my hand which was covered in dried blood, some of it mine and some it of the monsters I killed. He then glanced at my clothes which were similarly bloodied and his eyes came to a stop at the tip of the spear.

"Did you kill them?" he asked warily.

I gave him a nod and pointed toward the dead beast next to him.

"Yeah, they were going to kill me just like that boar wanted to trample you to death"

His body was still tensed so I recounted how I accidentally killed the first one and then acquired peculiar powers. I could visibly see him relax as I kept talking about my encounters. In fact he had started to slowly get excited as I talked about the amazing system. In the back of my mind I felt that if he didn't have a similar system than this might have been a big folly by me. But I had already mentioned it and he had latched on to it, so much that he seemed least concerned about his injuries. After I recounted how killed the goblin with the stone I decided to stop.

"Let's pause for now and treat your wounds"

He was about to protest but I just cast the healing spell on him and watched as his wounds stopped bleeding and started to close. He stared at his thigh in amazement.

"Magic! Cool, I want it"

He looked at me zealously and shouted, "Let's go hunt some of those green shits! Oh and my name is Oscar".

-----------

I slowly walked through the shrubs. There was a small life signal ahead of me, It was a bit smaller than the one the Boar's gave so it seemed weaker. I could also sense Oscar behind me. Soon enough I saw the beast. It was a Lizard but about the size of a young crocodile. It was slowly climbing up a tree. I signalled for Oscar to stop, and activated Camouflage from the already active Ranger skill. The lizard was non wiser as I skewered one of its legs to the tree. It squirmed and shrieked but to no avail.

I motioned to Oscar and he was already next to me in flash. I had given him my knife so he could better defend himself in case of an emergency. He took it out and hesitated for a second then having steeled his mind plunged it into the lizards neck. The lizard writhed for a second then stopped twitching. I looked at Oscar expectantly, the next few seconds would be very important in how I'll have to approach this world.

Clearly I wasn't the only one transported here. But did the others have a similar system as me. If they did than they could be great allies to survive together and maybe find a way back but it also meant that they could be terrible enemies as well. If I was unique and only I have the System then it would be very dangerous to let anyone know about it. Humans are a jealous bunch. But it would also mean that I would have an advantage over everyone else.

Having a powerful ally could be the difference between life and death. And having talked with Oscar during the hunt I felt that he wouldn't be terrible companion to have.

He had a very straight forward and simple personality. Someone who wouldn't dawdle with pleasantries but talk real talk. He'd voice his desire when he had one and his suspicions as well. Such a person was easy to work with and he was also very fiery and energetic, which just meant I won't be getting bored anytime soon.

As that small instance passed, Oscar turned around to look at me.
