8 The Officer and The Fool

"MR. HENDRIX !" Audrey snapped at her superior.

"Just a passing thought, pay it no mind. I obviously know the consequences of doing so..." A frown appeared on his face.

It was obvious that as a government officer the act of bribing is heavily condemned. Any officers found receiving or giving such 'Gifts' would probably be stripped of their position and even sentence into imprisonment for an indefinite period. That is only one side of the coin.

The other repercussion would potentially lead to dissatisfaction of noble houses and even lead to riots if evidence were found that the government was actively and intentionally scheming to undermine their houses.

"It'd better be ! Even-though I'm your assistant, that does not meant I'll comply and follow to your whims and fancies that goes against our laws. Need I remind you that all government employees are required to whistle-blow any wrongdoings ? Otherwise they will be deemed as accomplices and sentence to similar judgment..." she paused to catch her breath before continuing.

"And I am so not going to allow you to jeopardize my life, Mr. Hendrix. I'm finally going to get married soon! You of all people know how long I have waited for the right suitor. Believe me when I say, I'll tell on you the moment you break on any regulations..." Audrey continues to nagged at Hendrix.

Hendrix place his index finger on her lips to stop her from continuously babble on rules, morality and her wedding. Silencing her a moment before retrieving his hand.

"I heard you loud and clearly Audrey..." He affirmed her and quickly changed to a different topic altogether.

"What do you think we should do in this case then ? You should know clearly, these nobles have managed to come up with countermeasures against our paternity test..."

"What can we do ? We can't exactly send assassins to kill off their new found heir..."

"That might not be such a bad idea, seeing they were the ones who cheated first."

"Those are just children!"

"From my perspective, not anymore. They might be some freak of nature, byproduct of the noble's little experiment..."

"But still they are children..." Audrey stammered.

"It's almost time for me to leave, I'll think about it further and notify you on our next course of action." Hendrix concluded their brief discussion.

He put on his coat and left the area. It was rather cold tonight. As he was travelling back home, his mind wandered about his next course of action. Audrey's thoughtless rambling actually gave him an idea on dealing with those freaks. Murder in the form of an accident. He recalled an organization which specialized in staging untraceable accidental deaths.

He finally arrived at his destination and got off the tram. It would take another fifteen minutes by foot to reach home but he was already feeling very hungry. It was already 8 o'clock in the evening. He pass-by a sandwich stall and purchase something to quench his immediate hunger. He was munching on his dinner while proceeded to walked home.

Unbeknownst to him, a dark shadow was trailing behind him in silence...
