6 Chapter 5

"I will feast on your flesh, demigod!"

I looked behind me and saw a large black shadow. It was probably the one who had been watching me for so long. Perhaps taking off my ring when I was three had made me more susceptible to monsters? Even if that was the case my magical energy signature would be entirely different from a gods' and would probably drive away monsters due to the sheer force of it.

Then, maybe? Well I guess I could consider the option that my random reincarnation had lead me to become a demigod. That would be annoying though. Monsters chasing me due to how tasty I look would not be good for my plans to travel the world.

While thinking about this the shadow lept at me. I sighed, "How annoying," I muttered under my breath. I was far enough away from Leah's house so they couldn't hear me. It was the perfect time for a monster to strike since I'm around people so much.

Thus I did what any sane human with no combat experience would do. I took off down the driveway screaming. The scream quickly turned into a "Byeeee!" though as I realized it probably wouldn't be a good idea to draw attention from the neighbors. I'd have my mom sort this out, it'd be fine, right?

The shadow chasing behind me followed at a moderate walking pace. It didn't seem to be fast enough to keep up with me, though if I stopped I'd probably be dead. I ran up to the car and opened the door, I didn't have time to look behind me.

I shut the door as fast as I could and urgently said to my mom, "Drive, now!" She sensed that this was an emergency and drove off as fast as she could. At that point the shadow was near the window, I was only a little bit faster since I do some light jogging in the mornings sometimes.

As we neared the entrance to the neighborhood I said, "Okay you can slow down now."

She looked at me with a confused expression. "Did you and Leah have a fight today or something?"

I fidgeted in my seat, hoping she'd believe me instead of telling my father to give me another one of his "talks". He discussed any issues I might be having with me and told me how to cope with them. I found it a bit annoying at times but sometimes he's helpful I guess.

"Uhm, no.." I said quietly, hoping she'd believe me since it was true. "Please don't think I'm crazy. There was this big black shadow thingy that started chasing me when I left." As I said this I realized how utterly insane I must sound to a normal person. She had said that she knew my biological father had let me be able to speak ancient greek, but I don't know if she thought he was human or not.

She kept driving at a normal pace as she pulled out of the neighborhood. There was a worried look on her face and I could sense that she might talk about this with my father when we got home.

We sat in silence for the rest of the drive until she pulled into our house. I hesitantly got out of the car and started walking up the driveway. As I got to the door my mother came up to me and pulled me into a hug. "You were very brave today, Charlie," She said softly. "I'm gonna have to talk with your father about this, so don't get ready for bed yet."

I nodded mutely and she opened the door and ushered me inside. I decided to wait outside the kitchen as my mother went in and spoke with my father in hushed tones. They seemed to come to an agreement, though I couldn't make out what they said.

After that, I heard my mom calling someone, again in a hushed voice. While she did that my father came out and spoke to me. I braced myself in case he wanted to deliver one of his "talks" again.

Instead he put his hands on both my shoulders and said, "There is going to be someone coming here tomorrow. We want to send you to a summer camp."

Huh?

He must've seen the shocked expression on my face since he quickly elaborated. "It's a camp to help people like you. I've heard they teach you how to fight and you're able to become friends with more similar people to yourself."

Does he mean demigods? I mutely nodded towards him, before it dawned on me that I wouldn't be able to spend the summer with Leah. "What about Leah? We said we'd spend the summer together!"

He looked uncomfortable at this. "I'm sorry Charlie, I don't think you can. I'm sure you both can keep in contact though."

Before I could say anything else he walked to the kitchen with me and started making a plate of food for me. "We're having parmesan chicken tonight! You're favorite!" He said and grinned at me. I nodded like a deflated balloon.

My mother came back from the living room. "Everything is sorted out, someone will come tomorrow to escort you." She gave me a sympathetic look, "I'm sorry Charlie, we just don't want you to get hurt."

I ate my parmesan chicken sadly and thought of Leah. I wish I could've given her a better goodbye. We knew this was coming, but not this soon.
