14 Accident

After the incidence, Mika never mentioned it again to Lukas. He will never forgive Anthony for hurting Mika like that. Everything cooled down a bit and for now, Anthony never really made a move.

Today, they prepared everything for the fair that's going to be focused on young kids and adults, they will display the most advance technology for them to learn. For each age groups, they will have something that suits them. Of course it's going to be in a huge conference room since it was summer with sweltering heat. As they prepared, Mika and David checked everything to be make sure things are safe and checking off the list they prepared in advance.

"All finished on my side, how about yours?" Mika asked David and he signaled her an okay. They are finished with their list and took a short break before the kids arrive. David handed Mika a water bottle, "You've worked hard in the morning, here you go." Mika thanked David. After the incidence, Mika slowly started to trust David again, although it was a slow process but she made an improvement, "I wonder how many kids will be here today. The heat is crazy outside." Mika asked David while she rested her body against the wall. David thought about it and replied, "I actually don't know. Every year, the numbers are different. I hope it's not too much since it will be too crowded." Mika giggled and tried not to laugh, "I didn't know you dislike crowds. Don't worry I won't tell Lukas." David smiled and drank his water.

After a while, Lukas and another manager came out of the conference center, they seemed to be worried about something. Mika looked at David and both of them went to Lukas.

"What's the matter?" She asked and both of them looked worried. Mika was hoping it's not some bad news. Lukas looked at Mika and pulled her aside, "We just got the info of a school bus accident happening near our company and there are passengers who were suppose to come here. There will be kids down in the lobby so their parents can pick them up. We might have to cancel, the manager is talking to the staff about the incident. Can you and David go down and check on them? Help them if you can. I'm going to check on them after I'm done." Mika nodded and reassured him, "David and I will try our best. Don't worry. Take a rest if you don't feel well or ask someone to call me, okay? Don't overwork yourself." Mika pecked on Lukas' lips and looked into his eyes, "I'll be okay. I won't leave the building. You can find me if you need to."

When they head to the lobby, they saw many kids and adults too. Some were freaked out while some kids are crying for their parents. Mika could see the bus accident from the lobby window. She was horrified. She wondered what caused the accident but she shook it off and focused on the kids who were crying. One child tugged her suit, she turned around and saw a ten years old boy, "What's the matter? Do you need anything?" The boy didn't say anything but wrote a note, "Where is daddy and mommy?" Mika kneeled down and looked at the boy, "Your parents must be on their way. There are other kids waiting for their mommy and daddy too. Take a seat here and wait for them, okay? I'll call you when your parents arrives, what is your name?" The young boy wrote in his notebook, "Timothy." Mika smiled and nodded, "Such a nice name, I'll let you know when your parents come."

Mika saw on Timothy's school ID, he was a special need child who couldn't talk. She dealt with few of them back in the days when she had to babysit kids. Paramedics were also in the lobby treating injuries and some of them needed to be sent to the hospital. Almost of the kids went with their parents after several hours, but Timothy's parents never came to pick him up. Mika waited with him but to no avail. She turned to Timothy and asked him if he wanted to follow her back to Lukas' office. Timothy shook his head and wrote, "I want to wait for my mommy and daddy." Mika understood but they've waited for more than two hours.

"Timothy, let's wait at my office. Okay? You must be hungry. It's past 7PM already." Mika told Timothy and his stomach growled. Timothy nodded and followed her back into her office. She held his hand while waiting for the elevator and at the same time, he called Lukas.

"There's a child whose parents haven't picked him up yet. It's past 7PM so I thought if he can join us for dinner. We should have enough dinner boxes, right?" Mika asked and Lukas replied yes. As they went into the office, Lukas greeted the little boy, "Hi there, what's your name?" Timothy hid behind Mika, she smiled and said, "This is Timothy, he couldn't talk. It's on his school ID." Lukas nodded, "We have dinner boxes you can choose from, Timothy. Which one do you like? We have noodles and rice." Timothy chose chow mein (cooked noodles with vegetables.) and Mika brought a chair for him to sit and eat on the table.

Timothy ate it heartily and thoroughly enjoyed the meal. After a while, David came to the office and reported on the situation, "Timothy's parents didn't make it, they crashed with the school bus and died around 4PM." Mika felt her heart sank, she regretted telling Timothy that his parents are picking him up. What to do, what to do, she thought. Lukas said, "Mika, let's go home first and let Timothy stay with us for now. You must be tired, David and I will figure it out after going back." Mika nodded and Timothy, "Timothy, tonight you will have to come with me. Your parents couldn't pick you up because they went somewhere far away. I'm sorry, I'm sorry, Timothy." Timothy cried silently and didn't have a temper, it was as if he understood his parents won't come back.

Mika asked David to buy some boy's pajamas, clothes and extra toothbrush before they head back home. After a while, David came back with three bags of clothes and essentials. Mika thanked David afterward.

Mika tucked Timothy to bed and read him a story, after finishing it, Timothy fell asleep soundly. She really wanted to comfort Timothy, she won't know how future will hold for him. For now, they got permission from the police to take in the child for temporary custody.
