14 Against better judgment

Anna stared at her milkshake, its appeal had totally vanished, and she was left to pout as she dumped it inside her fridge.

Her pleasure of drinking it will have to wait, and she was left to let out a grunt. She let out a scream the moment she sat on the swivel chair.

"I should have stayed with mama for a bit more. Maybe, this tragic day would never have occurred," Anna muttered. She sighed as she turned her computer on.

Kristofer's face flashed before her mind, though, and the close contact they had. Her heart immediately reacted, and she had to place her hands over her chest.

"No, Anna. You can't," she warned herself.

The emotion she was beginning to feel was all too familiar. She had been down this road several times and had already learned her lesson. She did not need any repeat of history. To add, she already crossed it off forever.

Clearing her throat, Anna also cleared her head.

"Happy thoughts, Anna. Happy thoughts," she stated, convincing herself just to forget the man who got her flustered suddenly.

In all honesty, Anna had struggled to keep her cheeks from flaming up when Kristofer Almodiel had leaned in closer.

If he had even let himself come any closer, their lips would have touched, and the thought had provoked something inside Anna. She shook her head, slapping her face with her hands.

"Stop! Get a grip, Anna," placing her hands on her face. Anna let out another scream. Gratefully her office was soundproof.

She can scream all she wants, and no one will hear her. She could even play the loudest music, and still, no one would ever hear what was taking place inside.

"Focus," she muttered. Clicking on the email she had received the other day, Anna read through it again. Once she had spotted the name, she took note of it and began typing on her keyboard.

"Whoa," Anna remarked as soon as she saw the photo of her next target. She scoffed. He looked young, and undoubtedly, just staring at the image of him, he was a total heartbreaker.

Yet, as part of her policy, she began typing some keywords regarding the man.

Anna was not stupid.

She knew that with the agency that she had put up, there would be people who might think of using it for their advantage.

Anna was mad at people who did not keep their promises and was dishonest in their relationship. She hated cheating boyfriends or girlfriends and unfaithful husbands or wives. No matter what those people would claim that led them to commit something they shouldn't, it was no excuse.

However, Anna did not want to make mistakes, nor did she want things to go out of hand by punishing people who were actually innocent.

The agency did not work like that. Anna made sure to get the facts straight. So, getting even actually took some time.

She needed to do research, and most often than not, she made close contact with the target. She had to make sure that she was not punishing the wrong people.

Nikki had warned Anna that it was dangerous. There was a ten percent chance that the target might make a connection to her and would actually seek revenge on her, personally.

Anna knew that. But she also knew she was bound to make a mistake if she did not fact checked the claim and only believed what the internet said or the client had said.

Just like a court hearing, Anna wanted to hear both sides. But in her case, she needed to verify the truth.

Listing down the necessary details, Anna began picturing how she would deliver his punishment.

But first, she needed a new dress.

Sighing, Anna searched online.

Since she found that she could buy dresses online instead of physically coming to a shopping center, Anna relied on the internet to find everything she needed.

She became dependent on online shops and even food deliveries. Sometimes when she was too lazy to make food for herself, she made quick orders online.

This way, her hermit way of living was taken to another level.

Finding the perfect fancy dress to catch the billionaire's attention, Anna clicked the button to buy it.

It would take a few days to deliver, enough time for her to find out more regarding her new target.

Anna can't help but smile. Other than the danger that lurked when she have new jobs to work on, she couldn't help but feel at ease knowing she was at least making a difference.

She stared at the photo before her screen once more.

"Pity, you looked like someone I might have a crush on. Sadly, our first and last meeting would not end well, if you turn out to be a jerk. Plus, I hate people like you."

Closing her computer, Anna allowed herself to stretch a little.

She then grabbed the waffles, which she had initially planned on enjoying while making her way back to the office.

Unfortunately, she had crossed paths with two people she wished would disappear from the entire world.

'They don't even deserve to breathe the same air as everyone does.'

She clicked her tongue, annoyed. Her plans and the thought of having a good day were totally ruined.

Biting on the waffles, Anna tried not to think of the man right now.

Yet, her efforts were futile. Her mind seemed to have a life of its own. She was back to thinking about Kristofer Almodiel.

Anna threw her head back. She munched absent-mindedly and shut her eyes close.

When she had finally gulped down the food in her mouth, Anna muttered a curse.

She needed a distraction. She can't let herself think of him more often than necessary, or she would definitely fall into the very thing she had cursed a long time ago.

"No, Anna. You can't," Anna stated. She re-opened her eyes and sat up straight. She took a deep breath, her heartbeat accelerating.

Anna clenched and unclenched her hands, squeezing an imaginary stress ball.

"Stop thinking about him, Anna. You are Anna Mendoza. And you can never, as in ever, let yourself fall for Kristofer Almodiel," she paused, blowing away a strand of hair that fell on her face.

"Or for anyone on that matter."
