6 A New Life

I walked into my 'room' expecting it to be around the size of a small apartment, was I ever surprised to find that our family 'area' was the same size as our house back home, or even larger. There were 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, a large kitchen, dining room and the living room. There was also another room with a note on it that said "hobby room" I open the door and inside there was a catalogue sitting on the floor so I picked it up and flipped through it. There was everything in there from targets for axe throwing to drawing tablets. They all had a price of course but the price was around a quarter of the price on earth and sometimes it was even less. There were so many things to choose from!

"No Alex, you need to get a job first." I flicked myself in the face. As I am now I have no money! I did bring my wallet in my bag but they said everyone should "have a fresh start" and how "everyone is equal now" I honestly thought that was a load of bull, but whatever. I slung my bag over my shoulder and started towards the plaza. Everything in the hallways looked the same, the metal walls were dull and it was so quiet. The eeriness sent a shiver down my spine. I wonder if anyone would attack this ship... no! I can't think like that, I have to be full of energy for my interview! Finally, I arrived at the plaza, it had bright neon signs that light up the area around them in a swarm of colour. It was a nice break from the dull grey of the metal. Suddenly someone called out from behind a sh sign.

"Ay! Boy! You the one Mr. Gray was recommended for a job here?"

"Oh... umm" I was surprised Mr. Gray already came. "Yeah, that's me. Did Eri- I mean Mr. Gray already talk to you about me working here?"

"Yeah boy! You better apologize, he was yammering in about you for so long that I couldn't get my work done!" He complained, "But don't worry you're already hired."

"Wha...WHAT. Umm sorry, what even IS this job? Mr. Gray didn't tell me anything..."

"Well our store is a grocery store but each individual store needs to grow at least half of what they stock, that's the rule. But they don't give you much stock so you will be working in the back figuring out how to genetically modify the plants to get the best bang for your buck! Oh yeah, I'm Charles by the way.

"Umm Mr. Charles... I'm afraid I can't do that..."

"What?! You can't?"

"Umm, no..." I sighed apologetically. How the hell would I do that? first of all, I'm not even an adult, and second of all what you have in the back is a garden, not a lab.

"BA HA HA AH!! Don't worry so much boy, I know you can't I'm just messing with you. What you will actually be doing is working at a cash register."

"Oh, okay... thank god." WAIT, WHAT?! A cash register? That's so lame... but I guess for now it's the best I can get.
