53 Fanfiction 1: I'm Playing Cards in Battle City "Yu You vs Atem"
(AN: This is a non-canon series of chapters that I can pull out whenever I wish to. You are free to read it at any point of the story. Warning though: this fanfiction is still in the process of being translated so I am currently working off of the MTL. The duels in it are good and I highly recommend them.)
At an odd time of the day, the myriad worlds were astonished to find the familiar screen appearing out of nowhere. It was usually in the afternoons but now seems to be an extraordinary circumstance. What might be the case?
"Next duel. (IPC-IBC World): Yu You vs Atem (Battle City Finals)."
"It's a new world," (VRAINS) Varis stated.
"One with its own Battle City," (ZEXAL) Kaito frowned.
"And its own Pharoah," (DM) Marik wondered.
The screen comes to life and a familiar tower can be seen. On the top, two duelists can be seen walking up to each other.
On one end is a familiar Pharoah and on the other is a remarkably good-looking young man.
Many females in the audience couldn't help but scream in joy at the eye candy on the screen.
"I don't know what you think," Atem was saying as the two duelists shuffle the other's deck. "But I think it's great that the opponent in the Battle City finals is you."
"I feel the same," Yu You smiled.
The two duelists hand back their decks and walk over to their positions on the dueling platform. When they are ready, the referee begins the match.
[4000 LP] [4000 LP]
Their friends scream from the sidelines, hoping for their respective favorite to win the duel. Atem activates the spell card Graceful Charity and draws three cards, choosing two cards from his hand to discard. Since Watapon was among the cards added to Atem's hand, Watapon's monster effect special summons itself. Atem then tributes Watapon to tribute summon Summoned Skull.
Summoned Skull: [2500 ATK]
In only the first turn of the duel, Atem has already summoned a high-ATK monster. He then sets three cards before ending his turn.
Yu You is no pushover though, he reveals the monster card Magician's Souls in his hand. Using the monster effect of Magician's Souls, Yu You sends both it and the level {6} spellcaster-type Dark Magician Girl in his deck to the graveyard. Magician's Souls then revives the newly sent Dark Magician Girl to the field.
Dark Magician Girl: [2000 ATK]
A youthful and playful girl in magician's attire appears on Yu You's side of the field.
"He's got a Dark Magician Girl?!" (GX) Syrus cries. Why couldn't he be that lucky?
"Isn't that a duel spirit?" (5DS) Luna wondered. She can see the peculiarities in the way Dark Magician Girl carries herself.
"Well, isn't this just a duel between the two wielders of the Dark Magician Girl then?" (DM) Pegasus applauds.
Yu You activates the spell card Dark Burning Attack and uses its effect while he controls Dark Magician Girl to destroy Atem's Summoned Skull. Yu You then attacks Atem with Dark Magician Girl but Atem activates the trap card Mirror Force to destroy Dark Magician Girl.
Dark Magician Girl covers her head, ready to take the shockwave from Mirror Force, but Yu You isn't willing to lose Dark Magician Girl like this. He activates the quick-play spell card My Body as a Shield and pays 1500 LP to negate the destruction of Dark Magician Girl.
Yu You: [2500 LP]
Yu You commands Dark Magician Girl to continue her attack and the ditzy magician follows his call to blast Atem.
Atem: [2000 LP]
At the beginning of the duel, Yu You has claimed the upper hand. He sets a card and ends his turn.
The audience is awestruck, for in the age of DM it is clear that this kind of duel is leaps and bounds ahead of what a common duelist is able to accomplish.
Atem activates the spell card Pot of Greed and draws two cards from his deck. He then activates the spell card Card Destruction to make both duelists discard their hands before drawing the same amount.
Seeing Atem readily discard his hand, Yu You frowns but Atem answers his worries with the trap card Disgraceful Charity. All of the cards discarded are then added back to their hands.
Atem stares down at Yu You and prepares his combo. He activates the spell card Monster Reborn and revives the Queen's Knight that was discarded with Graceful Charity.
Queen's Knight: [1500 ATK]
Atem then normal summons King's Knight and uses its monster effect to special summon Jack's Knight since he controls Queen's Knight.
King's Knight: [1600 ATK]
Jack's Knight: [1900 ATK]
Three monsters... is it coming?
The audience stirs as both Seto Kaiba feel a sense of anticipation in the air. Atem is ready to fulfill their desires as he activates the spell card Double Summon to get an additional normal summon this turn.
Yu You wears a dull face and holds his breath as Atem tributes his three knights. Blue sparks fill the air as Atem raises his Egyptian God into the air.
Summon! Obelisk the Tormentor!
Obelisk the Tormentor: [4000 ATK]
A beam of light touches down the dueling platform as Obelisk's gigantic figure rises out of the ground. Shockwaves fill the air under the Egyptian God's might.
Atem attacks Dark Magician Girl with Obelisk the Tormentor, its huge fist eclipsing the cute magician. Yu You can only shake his head and inform Dark Magician Girl that he cannot save her. His best option is the trap card Damage Diet, which halves the battle damage he would take this turn. Dark Magician Girl unwillingly disappears into the blinding blue light.
Yu You: [1500 LP]
Yu You struggles under the might of Obelisk's divine might, resisting the force that knocked Marik into a roll. Dark Magician Girl's spirit comes out from the cemetery and helps support her master. Atem stares down at Yu You and challenges him to defeat his Egyptian God.
With both his opponent and his duel spirit calling for him to meet the challenge, Yu You takes his turn.
Yu You activates his own spell card Graceful Charity and draws three cards, selecting two to send to the graveyard. Yu You then summons to his field in defense mode, Elemental Hero Solid Soldier.
Elemental Hero Solid Soldier: [1100 DEF]
"Elemental Heroes!" (GX) Jaden exclaims. This new duelist seems to be a Hero-user just like him!
"So it's not just Atem's playbook that Yu You is stealing from," (VRAINS) Ai chides.
"Two different systems, working together, fascinating," (ZEXAL) Astral analyzes.
The monster effect of Elemental Hero Solid Soldier activates and Yu You special summons the level {4} Elemental Hero Blazeman in defense mode.
Elemental Hero Blazeman: [1800 DEF]
Since Elemental Hero Blazeman was summoned, Yu You uses its monster effect to add the spell card Polymerization from his deck to his hand. Yu You has the choice to fusion summon here but Obelisk the Tormentor is too big an enemy for a single hero to defeat. Yu You sets three cards before activating the continuous spell card Mirage of Nightmare.
Mirage of Nightmare's continuous effect allows Yu You to draw until he has four cards in his hand during his opponent's draw phase but he will have to discard the same number of cards during his own draw phase.
Several of (GX) Jaden's friends cannot help but look at their friend, thinking of his Mirage of Nightmare. Every time, Jaden would avoid the downside by using the quick-play spell card Emergency Provisions. Could Yu You be doing the same?
Atem stares at Yu You refilling his hand and activates the spell card Stray Lambs, special summoning two tokens to his side of the field. If Yu You cannot do something, Obelisk the Tormentor will sink him with one good Fist of Fate.
Obelisk the Tormentor tributes the two tokens and activates its monster effect, moving to destroy Yu You's monsters before inflicting 4000 points of damage.
Yu You removed the trap card Damage Diet in his graveyard from the game and activates its trap effect from the graveyard. Obelisk's effect damage is cut in half.
Yu You then activates the quick-play spell card Emergency Provisions and offers Mirage of Nightmare for the cost, regaining 1000 LP for each card offered.
Yu You: [1500 LP] - [2500 LP] - [500 LP]
Everything happened so fast, that many were caught off guard. Good thing that Yu You took the time when the smoke cleared to elaborate on how he survived. This kind of duel strategy in the age of DM certainly gets the approval of many elite duelists.
Yu You rests his hand on his deck and takes a deep breath. With one draw, he steels his nerves and prepares to take his turn.
First, he activates the continuous trap card Call of the Haunted and revives from the graveyard the level {3} Card Blocker. Yu You then tributes it to activate the spell card Downbeat, special summoning from his deck a monster that is one level lower with the same type and attribute as the tributed Card Blocker.
Special summon! The earth-attribute warrior-type level {2} monster, Hero Kid!
Hero Kid: [600 DEF]
A spectacularly-dressed kid jumps out from Yu You's deck and arrives on the field. Using the monster effect of the special summoned Hero Kid, Yu You then special summons two more from his deck. Heroes band together after all.
In the GX world, a certain (GX) jellyfish head is going crazy over seeing the power of heroes be put on full display.
As the audience marvels at Yu You's board, they noticed something. Three monsters... With a normal summon still available... Egyptian God?!
Dark clouds gather overhead as Yu You offers his three Hero Kids as a tribute for a tribute summon.
Summon! Slifer the Sky Dragon!
A large red entity flies out of the dark clouds and reveals its divine majesty to the audience.
Slifer the Sky Dragon: [3000 ATK]
Yu You is capable of wielding an Egyptian God card! Excitement fills the audience as they get ready to see a battle of the gods unfold.
While Slifer the Sky Dragon is still the weaker of the two, Yu You has it covered with the set spell card Card of Sanctity. The spell effect of Card of Sanctity makes both duelists draw until they hold six cards in their hands.
Slifer the Sky Dragon: [6000 ATK]
With the upper hand now, Slifer the Sky Dragon attacks Obelisk the Tormentor. Slifer the Sky Dragon curls around Obelisk the Tormentor's body but before it can get the upper hand, it loses strength in its body.
Atem activated his set trap card, Life Shaver. Since Life Shaver was set for two turns, Yu You is forced to discard two cards from his hand. In this world, Slifer the Sky Dragon and Obelisk the Tormentor are fated to disappear together once again.
Intense light fills the dueling platform before fading to reveal the two duelists standing without any Egyptian Gods to protect them.
Yu You doesn't want to risk being blown away by Atem's next monster so he activates the spell card Polymerization, using Elemental Hero Avian and Elemental Hero Burstinatrix as fusion materials for a fusion summon.
Fusion Summon! Elemental Hero Flame Wingman!
Elemental Hero Flame Wingman: [2100 ATK]
Another classic of Jaden Yuki, courtesy of Yu You. This time, gaining a favorable impression of the Pharoah, much to Seto's chagrin. How come Atem doesn't show him that kind of respect when he summons Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon?
With nothing else, Yu You ends his turn.
Atem activates the spell card Double Spell and uses its spell effect to discard a spell card from his hand to copy the effects of a spell card in Yu You's graveyard.
Activate, the spell Polymerization!
Using Dark Magician and Gaia the Fierce Knight as fusion materials, Atem conducts a fusion summon.
Fusion Summon! Dark Cavalry!
A fierce warrior riding a horse charges out of the fusion vortex, brandishing two spears ready to puncture his foes.
Dark Cavalry: [2800 ATK]
A new monster that no one in the myriad worlds recognizes has appeared under Atem's control. Capable of making a name even in the ARC-V world, Dark Cavalry's monster effect gives it 100 ATK for each spell and trap card in the graveyard. Regardless of the owner.
Dark Cavalry: [5000 ATK]
Immediately after losing Obelisk the Tormentor, Atem has summoned an even more fierce monster. Goes to show that the Egyptian God cards are just the premier challenge if someone wants to defeat the Pharoah.
Atem activates the Battle-City-exclusive spell card Quick Attack and gives his Dark Cavalry the ability to attack during the turn it is fusion summoned, regardless of the Battle City rules. Dark Cavalry charges in at Elemental Hero Flame Wingman, ready to help Atem claim victory.
Kuri~Kuri~
Cute sounds ring out as Yu You activates the monster effect of the Kuriboh in his hand, discarding it to reduce his damage to 0.
"I have heard that good duelists will have similarities in their choice of cards," Atem remarks. "Sure enough, we are similar."
Several duelists in the myriad worlds hold up their own versions of Kuriboh and couldn't help wondering if that is the truth.
Atem ends his turn by setting a card.
Yu You holds his breath and stares at his deck. This will likely be the most important draw he has made yet. Placing his finger on the top of his deck, he notices a transparent hand resting on top of his hand. Looking up, he sees Dark Magician Girl doing all she can to lend him support. A smile blooms on his face as he draws his card.
"Seto, lend me your power," Yu You calls as he reveals his card.
(DM) Seto frowns as he wonders what relationship he has with this duelist in another world.
Yu You activates the spell card Card of Demise and draws until he has five cards in his hand, with the minor drawback being the loss of his entire hand in five turns. With a rapid swipe of his fingers, Yu You adds his cards to his hand before staring down at the Dark Cavalry on Atem's side of the field.
Yu You activates the quick-play spell card Forbidden Chalice and attempts to negate Dark Cavalry's monster effects by giving it 400 ATK. Atem activates the monster effect of Dark Cavalry and discards one of his remaining two cards in his hand to negate the effect that would target a card on the field.
The green glow from Forbidden Chalice is rebounded back to the card by Dark Cavalry's dark aura before self-destructing.
Yu You normal summons Elemental Hero Liquid Soldier and uses its monster effect to revive from his graveyard the level {4} Elemental Hero Solid Soldier.

With two Elemental Heroes on Yu You's side of the field, he is ready to activate his set spell card Polymerization to offer them up as fusion materials.
Fusion Summon! Elemental Hero Gaia!
Elemental Hero Gaia: [2200 ATK]
Elemental Hero Gaia's monster effect activates since it was fusion summoned, reducing Dark Cavalry's ATK by half and adding the amount to Elemental Hero Gaia. Not wanting to take any chances, Atem discards his last remaining card to negate the monster effect using Dark Cavalry's monster effect. A swirl of dark energy flows around Dark Cavalry's spear before launching at Elemental Hero Gaia.
The dust settles and Yu You is unperturbed. Since Elemental Hero Liquid Soldier and Elemental Hero Solid Soldier were used as fusion materials, their monster effects activate upon hitting the graveyard.
The monster effect of Elemental Hero Liquid Soldier allows Yu You to draw two cards from his deck before sending one to the graveyard. Yu You then activates the monster effect of Elemental Hero Solid Soldier and revives Elemental Hero Flame Wingman.
Elemental Hero Flame Wingman: [2100 ATK]
Yu You then activates the spell card Fusion Recovery and uses its spell effect to add Elemental Hero Liquid Soldier and Polymerization from his graveyard back to his hand.
A shudder runs through the viewers as they recall a similar situation in the Jaden vs Zane duel. Elemental Hero Flame Wingman and Polymerization...
Yu You activates the reclaimed spell card Polymerization and fuses Elemental Hero Flame Wingman with the Elemental Hero Sparkman in his hand.
Fusion Summon! Elemental Hero Shining Flare Wingman!
Elemental Hero Shining Flare Wingman: [2500 ATK]
A large glare shines on the dueling platform as the shining hero descends to the field. While Elemental Hero Shining Flare Wingman is on the field, its monster effect increases its ATK by 300 for each "Elemental Hero" in Yu You's graveyard. The spirits of Yu You's fallen heroes appear behind the shining hero, lending their support.
Elemental Hero Shining Flare Wingman: [4900 ATK]
Since Yu You activated several spell cards this turn and Atem discarded several of his own, Dark Cavalry's ATK rises to match the newly combined total.
Dark Cavalry: [5600 ATK]
As much as Yu You tried, Elemental Hero Shining Flare Wingman on his own is nowhere near enough to defeat Dark Cavalry.
"It's not over yet," Yu You chuckles. "In order to respond to your full strength, I will show you mine and use the very limit of my capabilities. Watch, this is my limit!"
Yu You activates the spell card Favorite Hero and equips it to his Elemental Hero Shining Flare Wingman. Seeing that Yu You's key card is an equip spell card, Atem realizes that the previous attempts to undercut his Dark Cavalry were all leading up to this play. With Favorite Hero's spell effect, when Yu You enters the battle phase he can activate a field spell card from his deck and increase the ATK of the equipped monster by its DEF while a field spell is on the field.
Activate! The field spell card of the Elemental Heroes, Skyscraper!
Concrete buildings rise out of the Kaiba Corp tower as the two duelists enter a city aglow in the night. The myriad worlds get excited as they feel the excitement in the air as Yu You comes at Atem with his full strength.
Elemental Hero Shining Flare Wingman's DEF is 2100, an amount that is now added to its ATK courtesy of Favorite Hero since Yu You now controls a field spell card.
Elemental Hero Shining Flare Wingman: [7000 ATK]
Yu You looks over at the Dark Magician Girl by his side, knowing that he couldn't get this far without her by his side. He commands Elemental Hero Shining Flare Wingman to attack Dark Cavalry and the spearman tries to put up a struggle with the little ATK gained by Yu You's face-up spell cards.
Dark Cavalry: [5800 ATK]
Smoke billows out from Yu You's attack and when it clears, the audience is shocked to find no changes in the field. When Yu You attacked with Elemental Hero Shining Flare Wingman, Atem activated the monster effect of the Electromagnetic Turtle in his graveyard. By removing it from the game, the battle phase is forcibly ended.
The myriad worlds' audience couldn't help but feel a little sad, seeing that Yu You lost the chance to close the duel but before they have time to settle down Yu You slaps a card down from his hand.
The activated spell card is Surprise Attack from Beyond!
The friendly Marik in the spectators explains the effect of the card to the audience, having been the former owner of the card. When the battle phase ends, the user can start a new one using only a monster summoned this turn to attack again. Elemental Hero Shining Flare Wingman isn't done just yet, the final blow is here!
Dark Cavalry: [5900 ATK]
A strong punch forces its way through Dark Cavalry's torso before sending up a fierce explosion, Atem's body skittering back from the shockwave.
Atem: [900 LP]
Since Elemental Hero Shining Flare Wingman destroyed a monster by battle, its monster effect activates and inflicts damage to the owner according to that monster's original ATK. Everyone watches as the shining hero moves to finish off Atem but the Pharoah himself is unconcerned. Laughter fills the dueling platform as he reveals Yu You's trump card is now his undoing.
Atem activates the counter trap card Face-Off, allowing him to negate the effect of a card during the battle and destroy it. Since Elemental Hero Shining Flare Wingman's monster effect is activating at the tail-end of the battle, Atem is able to negate the effect and destroy it. This effect also bypasses Favorite Hero's equipped effect that protects Elemental Hero Shining Flare Wingman from being targeted by card effects.
It's over...
"You are a really good duelist," Yu You helplessly smiles. "I wanted to take a gamble and surpass my limits, see if I could defeat you. Unfortunately, I'm a little shy of defeating a King of Games."
"We both gave it our all," Atem smiles. "This is good enough, we used everything available and there are no other means."
Yu You closes his eyes and takes a deep breath.
"In that case, let me show you the respect you deserve. Borrowing your power once again, Seto!" Yu You shouts.
Yu You's last set card comes open and the audience falls silent. The final card is the trap card, Ring of Destruction!
By blowing up Elemental Hero Shining Flare Wingman, both duelists will take damage equal to his ATK. It will be a draw!
A large explosion takes place sending both duelists to the ground.
Yu You: [0 LP]
Atem: [0 LP]
After the smoke clears, both duelists look over at the other and cannot help laughing. It sure was one fun duel.
The myriad worlds cannot help but share that sentiment with many wearing smiles on their faces.
"(IPC-IBC World): Yu You vs Atem (Battle City Finals). The outcome is a draw."
