6 A Big Girl Now

Wang Jun sat in front of the fireplace in his study, thinking about the events of the past few days. It was merely a date with a woman and they didn't even part amiably. Ever since he'd told his sister that Ms. Sen had walked out in the middle of the meeting, his sister had raged for hours.

Wang Yue hadn't been this mad at him since he had brought that woman into their lives. His grandmother trying to solve the tension between the siblings, had asked Wang Jun for the details. But now she wouldn't even look at him after he told her what happened.

However, Wang Jun wasn't bothered, he knew his sister and grandmother would forgive him. No, what made him feel worse than gutter slime was the crushed look on his daughter's face.

*The day after the meeting*

Wang Yue burst into the living room of Wang Jun's apartment, demanding answers. "What did you do, Jun? What could you possibly have said that would make even Mahiya walk out?"

"Good morning, dear sister. How are you this fine day? Would like to read a paper?" Wang Jun said. Wang Yue felt like her head would explode. "This is not the time for your sarcasm, Jun. I want answers. So put that newspaper down and start talking before I shred it to bits."

Wang Jun lowered the paper and leant back, raising an eyebrow at his sister he said, "Yue, regardless of what I did, shouldn't you be standing with me? I am your brother. Why are you raging at me for some stranger? Besides that woman was not suitable."

"Wasn't suitable? Hah! You don't know just whom you have let go. Did you ever stop to think why I was so insistent on Mahiya? Why I wasn't pushing for the other heiresses? Perhaps I should have. After the stunt you pulled the other day, I am tempted to shackle you to those vapid heiresses who only have schemes in their mind. Maybe you would learn humility once you start having to guard yourself even in sleep."

"Be reasonable, Yue. All this matchmaking is not necessary." Wang Jun was exasperated with his sister. Could she not see that he did not need a woman in his life?

Wang Yue stared hard at her brother and decided that she needed to leave before she flipped the table. "Brother, I hope you realise that even if you don't need a wife, Xiao Wei needs a mother and believe it or not, Mahiya would have been perfect."

At the mention of his daughter, he had lost all the wind in his sails. His sister's parting words kept repeating in his head until he noticed the small form of his daughter climbing on the sofa. The instant he saw his daughter, Wang Jun forgot everything else. Pulling his little ball of sunshine into his arms, the father said, "Xiao Wei, when did you wake up?"

"Just a few minutes ago. Daddy, don't worry. Your Wei Wei is a big girl now. I don't need a mommy. It's okay." Clutching her father's neck, Xiao Wei burst into tears and kept on repeating "It's okay" through her sobs.

Wang Jun felt like someone was dragging him through hot coals. He never could stand it when his daughter cried. But now his precious daughter was crying because of him. Each sob of his daughter made him feel like the lowest of the low. Wang Jun started rocking Wei Wei in his arms murmuring apologies, "I am sorry, baby. Please don't cry anymore. Daddy is so very sorry."
