“Isabel?” I yelled as soon as we entered the house. I glanced over the living room and sitting room to the right. “Isabel?”

Nothing.

I sprinted up the stairs and checked every room, but she was nowhere to be found. “Isabel!”

“Declan, down here!” Trent yelled.

I dashed down the stairs, and her feet were visible from the kitchen island. “Isabel!” I ran toward her, but a policeman blocked my way.

“I’m sorry, sir,” he said. “But she’s gone.”

“Get out of my way!” I yelled, pushing him to the side as I ran into the kitchen.

“Trent, step aside,” I growled, keeping my voice even as tears filled my eyes.

“But don’t touch her, man. You don’t want to interfere with the investigation.” Sorrow like none I’d seen before filled his eyes.

I nodded once, and he stepped aside. But I wasn’t prepared for what I saw.

Isabel lay in a pool of blood coming from her wrists. Her eyes were wide open, as if in shock.
