“Dr. Pierce, I’m glad you stopped by when you did.” Clarise Morgan rubbed her forehead nervously as she looked around. “I’d hate to think anything happened to the property because I forgot to lock it up.” A crease formed between her eyes. “Did you see anything out of the ordinary when you came in?”

I shook my head, smiling. “No. Not at all.” I smiled as I turned to Henley. “Clarise, this is my fiancé, Ms. Henley Douglas. Henley, this is Ms. Clarise Morgan.”

Clarise smiled, nodding to Henley. “It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

Henley returned her smile. “The pleasure is mine.”

Then Clarise turned to me and smiled. “Congratulations on your engagement.”

“Thank you.” I let out a deep breath. “We’d like to buy this house.”

“Well, the other couple put down an offer already—”

“Has it been accepted?” I asked, cutting her off. I knew how this game was played, and I played it well.

She shook her head. “No, not yet, but—”
