2 Chapter 1

3rd Person POV

Standing alone on a roof looking down at the city, the only thing illuminating them is the city lights and the moon. This day marking an unforgettable event, "After all these years, I still remember that day as if it was yesterday," the figure sighed. A single tear running down their left cheek.

*flashback*

A family of five sat at the dinner table eating, talking, and laughing. A normal evening. Nothing happening, just peace until everything changed in the blink of an eye. Suddenly the house was engulfed in flames, a scream rang out through the neighborhood, a scream of terror, tragedy, and regret. The youngest of the siblings was paralyzed in fear as they stared at the villain towering in front of them. The two elder siblings stood in front of the youngest in a protective manner. The oldest was a twelve-year-old brown-haired boy with bright green eyes while the second was a seven-year-old girl with long black hair and chocolate brown eyes. In front of them were their already dead parents and the villain and pro hero who they recognized as Endeavor fighting in the living room.

Blows were exchanged back and forth, flames blazing, and shadows swirling in every corner, writhing in the light of the flames. To their relief, the flame hero was winning. As more flames erupted from his body, fewer shadows were seen and the less powerful the villain became. Though that moment of relief was short-lived, for when the hero blasted his flames towards the villain's body, he missed and the raging fire swallowed the two children as they protected their sibling. Their bodies burned to unrecognition, the young child wept over their siblings' corpses, ignoring their own pain as some of the fire licked their body, scarring their arms and legs.

After a few more minutes of fighting, Endeavor had finally beaten the shadow villain, knocking him out and restraining him. The hero could faintly hear crying throughout the room. He looked to his left and found a child crying over their family's bodies. He tried to reach out to the child but the house started to collapse. The child looked at him with empty eyes, tears coating their soot-stained face, Endeavor looked between the child and the villain considering if he should go out of his way to save the child or take the villain into custody. Then, more of the ceiling began to cave in, the walls cracking and giving in to the pressure. Making the choice to pull the villain from the flames, leaving the child for dead. Endeavor looked back at the house, his eyes meeting the cold grey ones before the ceiling collapsed and the child was hidden from view.

As the house started to collapse and as the hero looked back at the child for the last time, knowing that the hero wouldn't save them, they formulated a plan. As the front of the house started to fall, the child said goodbye to their family and ran out the back of the house, across the yard, and into the woods. Tears continued to stream down their face. They ran and ran until their lungs stung and hurt and their legs felt as if they would fall off at any moment. The five-year-old stopped to catch their breath. The police sirens rang very faintly in the distance, the smell of smoke still burning in their nose. So exhausted from running, the child slept on the grass under a night sky still grey with the smoke from their home.

The next morning when the child awoke, they were hungry and stiff. Eyes barely holding any emotion as they trudged back to their now ruined home. The ruined house which was once full of life the day prior was burnt to a crisp. Police and heroes were long gone. They stood at the edge of the house staring blankly at the charred wood. Though what they didn't expect was the footsteps that they heard approaching.
