7 Ch 7: Oh, shut it

And so they climbed in the elevator and made their way to the fifth floor. They didn't talk much on their way up, though both were bursting just to say something to each other; and finally, the elevator reached her floor and they climbed out.

"Well," Dylan said walking up to them with a big grin. "You work fast dude." "Oh shut it," Isaac replied, and Maya saw him blush when he looked at her.

She decided that was her cue, and she headed for her desk. Dylan and Isaac talked for about five minutes and then when she looked up again she saw Isaac was about to leave, he waved to her and she waved back, and then he was gone.

The whole week had seemed like a dream to Maya. The boss had loved her article, accrediting her 'amateur' writing skills as brilliant, and worthy of more. And so she had been promoted to a journalist and had been writing small articles for the paper all week.

He had given her the freedom to write whatever came to mind when he didn't have a topic for her, and she had.

She had written articles about the importance of health and safety regulations, to the littering problem in the city, to 'ten reasons why to walk your dog'. But her promotion was not the only reason for Maya's elation.

Isaac had taken her for lunch every day since Monday and had called every evening after work. And on Friday at lunch, he had told her that he was having a braai at his house the next day and that he wanted her to bring the girls around.

It was Saturday morning, and usually, Maya would sleep until about nine 'o clock on a Saturday but as soon as first light had dawned she was wide awake.

She made coffee quietly so as not to wake the girls, and then after drinking her coffee, she started making pancakes. Pancakes were her and the girls' Saturday ritual, but usually, they would help her make them.

"Mommy, did you start without us?" Isabella called from her bed, and Maya smiled. She knew the smell would wake them. "I didn't want to wake you," Maya lied. "But seeing as you're awake, you can get ready. And wake up Samantha." "I'm awake," Samantha groaned into her pillow.

"Get ready for what?" Isabella asked, suddenly beside her in the kitchen. "We're going shopping," Maya grinned. "But our cupboards are already full," Isabella replied, confused.

Maya put her hands on Isabella's shoulders and turned her around, navigating her back to her and Samantha's room. "Girls," she said.

"Mommy got a promotion at work… Today I'm taking your clothes shopping." Isabella and Samantha squealed with delight, and then Samantha bolted out of bed in an attempt to get to the bathroom first. Isabella protested, but then decided to let her younger sister shower first.

"I'll help with the dishes while she's busy," Isabella shrugged, making Maya's heart miss a beat.
