4 Vampires

Namjoon peered out the peephole of his apartment door and relaxed when he saw it was Jimin on the other side. Running a resistance group didn't half make him jumpy whenever someone knocked on the door.

"Hey," Jimin said when he got through the five locks on the door. "Am I the first one?"

Namjoon gestured at the empty room. His step-parents were kind enough to sleep at their neighbours for the night whenever they had a meeting.

"I'll make some tea then," Jimin said and walked two steps into the kitchen.

"You'll have to water it down, there wasn't any at the market when I went earlier," Namjoon warned.

Jimin sighed and started filling the kettle. It was clear that their resources were starting to dwindle. They were both Type As so they should have better accesses to resources yet it was becoming harder to buy necessities.

Was it deliberate?

It was looking to be the likely answer. Namjoon sat down at the table and took out his notebook and pen. His pen rolled off the rough surface of the table and he frowned.

The sound of a much brusquer knock interrupted his thoughts and he found Seokjin and Yoongi on the other side of the door.

"Evening," he said. "Jimin is making tea. I'm sure I can find some biscuits to go with it somewhere."

"Finally something that's not a vegetable," Yoongi commented dryly and promptly sat himself down on the dumpy sofa. "Is V coming?"

"I told him not to come unless he's completed his mission."

"That's harsh," Seokjin said with a pout and sat down next to Yoongi. "When can we tell him to call us by our real names?"

Yoongi shook his head. "Never, it's too risky."

"When the world changes," Namjoon said cryptically.

Jimin emerged from the kitchen with a tray of cracked cups. He grinned when he saw the new arrivals.

"Yoongi-hyung! Seokjin-hyung!"

"Finally, someone who's happy to see me," Seokjin said and threw his arms around Jimin.

There was another knock at the door and Yoongi let Jungkook in. Hoseok arrived next.

"Are we going to have to wait a few hours for V to get here?" Seokjin asked.

The impractical part of the group of them was the different curfews. Namjoon knew Taehyung was limited unfairly by having to wait quite late to sneak out. Everyone else's families were happy to let them meet.

At midnight he told Jimin to go down and wait for Taehyung to arrive. Taehyung's ID card would not allow him entry to their apartment building and the main resistance had refused to procure him one that would until he had fully proven himself. Yoongi and Seokjin had their own forged cards to get in.

Taehyung arrived promptly and from the box shaped smile on his face Namjoon knew he had succeeded with his mission. Their only Type AB slapped the storage drive on the table triumphantly.

"It's all there," he announced. "It's quite shocking."

Namjoon gave him a pat on the back and tried a handshake that Taehyung ignored. The other members including Yoongi awarded him with a round of applause.

He took out his ancient laptop that he had managed to win in a competition in middle school and powered it up. It was extremely slow and didn't have an internet connection which was actually the best possible thing. An internet connection would allow the government to spy on him.

The next hour was spent talking between them and playing card games to pass the time before his laptop was ready. Seokjin was surprisingly good at most of them and Jungkook was the worse with Hoseok in a close second.

"I've finally got it to load," Namjoon said.

As Taehyung had promised it was a very interesting read. It did also confirm his suspicions.

Type ABs did have a much lower death rate than the other districts in the city. It could be argued that their population was smaller and they had better access to resources, but the difference was too extreme.

"There's been nearly nearly 800 000 deaths in the Type O district over the past 50 years," he informed them. "The rate is lower in the other districts and there's only been 49 for Type AB district. What does that tell us?"

"Type ABs don't do anything life threatening, have plenty of healthcare and have an easy life?" Yoongi said sarcastically.

"They should be dying from unavoidable factors such as traffic accidents, old age and terminal illnesses," Namjoon pointed out. "There are some things that money can't buy you."

Yoongi nodded. "I didn't take that into consideration."

"What does that mean then?" Jungkook asked.

Namjoon tried to arrange his words carefully to make sure they could all understand his points.

"There has to be a reason for the very careful segregation here. The government have arranged it very well. There had to be a reason for pairing up people to have children very specifically."

"Do you think there are more than four blood types?" Taehyung asked suddenly. "Someone at my school asked and the teacher told him to shut it."

That was a very interesting point. RM filed that thought for further use. He put it together with what Taehyung had told him last time about Bang Si Hyuk's recovery from the last assassination attempt. He knew the shot was intended to be lethal as it had been planned by the resistance yet Bang Si Hyuk was fine after a week in hospital.

"Potentially. There is either something with the blood that no one knows about or something that Type ABs are given to ensure they don't die," he paused. "Consider Bang Si Hyuk. He's getting old and gets shot every so often in assassination attempts. He's still alive and doesn't look like he's aged much, by all normal means, he should be dead."

"He must have a very superior blood type," Hoseok said.

Maybe that was the answer. Namjoon tore a sheet out his notebook and wrote something down. He needed a name to make the explaining easier.

"Let's say Bang Si Hyuk is a... 'New ABO'. What does that tell us?"

Jimin was the first one on the uptake.

"He's choosing who can have children to make sure they produce babies with the 'New ABO'?"

He didn't sound quite sure about his answer and Namjoon couldn't blame him. There was quite a stretch involved. They didn't quite know enough.

"It's a likely possibility," he agreed. "There's other things. The key here is Type AB."

Their only Type AB twitched nervously like he always did when his blood type was mentioned.

"Do you have any knowledge of anything suspicious going on in your district?"

Taehyung frowned and then shook his head.

"Aside from what I mentioned earlier, there's nothing out the ordinary," he paused. "Well my stepmother wonders why we aren't part of the super rich elite Type ABs considering what my father earns. Does that count? It's a very shallow suspicion."

Namjoon's eyes narrowed. Perhaps that was it.

"Can you tell me more about the super elite? I don't know much about them."

The rest of the members stayed silent whilst Taehyung told them all about them.

"They live in this area in the district that's nicknamed SKY Castle. It has a hospital as you know, but it's more than that. They have a block of actual houses- I don't live in a house and my foster family are rich. There's a mini mall and other facilities. It's like closed-off city within a city."

"Surely you don't think that's the place where all the New ABOs live?" Hoseok asked wonderingly.

"I think we're onto something," Yoongi said.

"Or we are on the completely wrong track," Seokjin pointed out. "It's a lot of conjecture."

"The system wouldn't have survived this long if the secret was easy to find," Namjoon said. "I will pass this information on to the resistance, however I don't know how interested they will be without a proper theory with evidence."

"Maybe they're vampires," Taehyung said suddenly. "I've read about them in story books."

"I would agree, but I have no idea what a vampire is," Yoongi said sarcastically. "I'm not as well read as you."

"It's a creature that sucks blood as sustenance. It won't survive long without it."

Jungkook scoffed. "As if. People would notice that one."

"We're taking any suggestions for our theory at the moment," Namjoon reminded him.

Anything they were coming up with was something valid to consider. Taehyung's idea was a little out the norm though and he put it to one side in his head.

"Okay. We've found our new objective. There's something strange going on that allows Type ABs to live for longer and the government want to keep that quiet. If we can find it, we can reveal it and weaken their hold," he announced. "Maybe that will be the beginning of the end for them."
