Chapter 1Chapter one

I'm almost home. After the long walk I got to see my family again. The government decided that every kid needs to be separated from their parents when they are born, only getting visitation rights once every year. The reason still confuses me but I'm not allowed to think for myself. Well that's what my Eri said when I refused to do what she wanted. To do what she and the government says because it's their right and I'm too stupid to do things for myself. I'm not the only kid there are others but in my humble opinion they're all rather dule except this one boy a year younger. I never let my opinions out of the crevasses of my mind fearing the repercussions like last time. I rather not go into any detail.

So close the river that leads the way home crosses my eyesight as i shift my direction to head over to the stream. The stream of water meandered gently through the dense forest, its clear surface reflecting the greenery above. It flowed steadily, cutting a path through the underbrush and mossy rocks, until it reached a small, quaint cabin nestled among the trees. The cabin was made of aged, dark wood, and had a sturdy slanted roof. He could see figures in the windows of the log cabin. My heart beats with excitement, blood pumping as my legs move on their own. When I reach the door Three knocks loud and resonating with the whole house. "Mom, dad, I'm home!".

My mom and dad after a few minutes my dad opens the door to my mom right next to him. My parents were both of Nirali and Sylphene descent, resulting in his striking features. His father Alaric Blackwood was a tall, broad-shouldered man with dark skin and a thick head of curly black hair. He had a boisterous laugh that filled any room he entered, and a kind heart that endeared him to everyone he met. my mother, Lysandra Blackwood on the other hand, was petite with delicate features and a warm smile. Her skin was a rich shade of brown, and her hair cascaded down her back in tight curls. They pull me inside with murmurs and the door shuts quickly. My mom turns me around and admires how much I've grown. I'm far from the scared skinny boy crying when he was taken away from his mom placed into the wagon with the other kids. "Vesper," she said, pulling him into a tight embrace. "It's so good to see you."

Vesper hugged her back, savoring the familiar scent of her perfume. "It's good to see you too, Mom."

Next Sunrise

We had planned to hunt for a rare and elusive creature called a glimmerhawk, which was known for its shimmering feathers and sharp talons. The glimmerhawk was a prized trophy, and only seasoned hunters were able to capture one.

The meat of a glimmerhawk is known for its tenderness and rich flavor. It's a deep red color with fine marbling throughout, making it both juicy and flavorful. The meat has a slightly sweet taste, with hints of smokiness and earthiness. When cooked, the meat becomes fork-tender and practically melts in the mouth. Overall a great welcome back breakfast.

We trekked through the dense forest for hours, searching for any sign of the glimmerhawk. The sun beat down on them relentlessly, and sweat trickled down my back. Despite the heat, I desperately want to catch a glimmerhawk.

As they walked, my dad pointed out signs of the glimmerhawk's presence - broken twigs, disturbed earth, and tufts of shimmering feathers. They followed the trail until they reached a small clearing, where they spotted the glimmerhawk perched on a tree branch, its feathers gleaming in the sunlight.

My heart raced as he watched the glimmerhawk, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. His father handed him a bow and arrow, and Vesper took aim, his eyes locked on the bird. With a steady hand, he let the arrow fly, and it struck the glimmerhawk in the chest.

The bird screeched and flapped its wings in fury, but Vesper's father was quick to act. He rushed forward and caught the glimmerhawk by the talons, holding it firmly. Vesper approached his father, feeling a mix of excitement and fear.

Together, they admired the glimmerhawk's beauty, its shimmering feathers and razor-sharp talons. I felt a sense of pride knowing that he had played a part in capturing the creature. He looked over at his parents, a smile spreading across my face.

The next day

My eyes open up early, feeling a sense of unease in the pit of his stomach. He got dressed and walked outside, where he found his parents sitting at the kitchen table, looking somber. "Son" his dad said he's usually neutral face "Your 'Teacher' Is hear for you a day week early do you have an idea of what's going on"

My lips quivered as I saw the lady with the wagon pulling up slowly, my legs unwilling to move forward. The lady stopped looking dead in my eyes and started moving her hands in an intricate pattern and like a lever was switched I left the kitchen to the living room and out of the door and into the back. Then it felt like a spell was lifted from me. Looking around I see most of my classmates in the same disheveled state. I'm in ragged Clothes, dirty hair and skinny to the point their ribs showed. Either a size too big or a size too small all of the kids seem just as miserable as I am.

As the wagon moved across the countryside what felt like hours till something interesting happened. We arrived at another house but something different happened The boy in question had his eyes under a blindfold with his parents in front of him screaming at the sargent

I couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness as I watched the military officials forcefully separate a young boy from his parents. The boy was crying and pleading, but the officials remained unmoved, dragging him away as his parents watched helplessly.

The rest of the journey to the academy was filled with an uncomfortable silence. No one spoke, and I could feel the weight of the fear and uncertainty that we all shared.

As we approached the academy gates, my heart began to race again, and I felt a wave of nausea wash over me. I didn't know what to expect from this year of training, but I knew it was going to be tough.

The wagon came to a halt, and we were ordered to get out and line up. A stern-looking captain addressed us, welcoming us back to the academy and warning us that this year's training would be even more challenging than the last.

I swallowed hard, my throat feeling dry, as I realized that my worst fears were about to come true.

Ill be sorted into one of the military branches
