Chapter 2

Gemma's POV

Adrian and I never thought we would be able to have another child, so we were so excited about this one. My oldest daughter Sapphire and my son Jasper worked to make sure my pregnancy was very peaceful. I was proud of how grownup they'd become.

For years we had tried to have another child after Jasper was born. After 3 miscarriages, we were told that the chances of us having any more was almost zero. By the time we decided to give up, our daughter was already eight years old and our son was almost six.

Sapphire has always been my hot-head, even before the ceremony when her eyes and hair went from white to a bright red. She was clearly favored by the spirit of fire.

Jasper's hair, on the other hand, became a dark green and his eyes turned to brown. He was favored by the spirit of earth and plants. A sign of a future career in botany. His personality was one of stability, patience and gentleness. Such a large contrast to his sister.

One day 6 months ago I was just finishing up breakfast with my children when Jaspar asked me

"Is my sister happy?"

I was a little puzzled, but just pointed to Sapphire and told him "ask her yourself. she's right there".

To my shock the little guy got up from his chair and headed over to where I was sitting, then put his head near my stomach and whispered "little sis, are you happy in there?"

Well, I burst out in tears! After years of our children asking us for a little sister, we had finally accepted that we wouldn't be able to have another baby and had told them that. To find out 2 years later that they were still hoping for a little sibling that I was unable to give them, broke my heart.

"I'm going to lay down for a rest" I told them while trying to secretly wipe the tears from my eyes.
