3 Favoritism

The sheer killing intent that she directed towards me indicated that she disliked people born without Birthrights. I usually ran into this kind of treatment. It usually happened at school. However, I wouldn't of thought it'd come from a nurse.

Nurse Olivia, AKA Stimpak, walked closer to me, her voice hissing. Blonde hair rising up as her purple eyes shone through the lense.

"What do you mean you don't have a Birthright?! You clearly have crimson eyes. That represents having a powerful Birthright. Are you lying to me boy?!"

"No ma'am. I wasn't lucky enough to receive one. I got my eyes from my mother. It skipped her generation as well." I answered her clearly, my voice sounding robotic from the nerves.

"Well then. According to the x-ray, you have suffered 2 cracked ribs, a broken wrist, a punctured shoulder, and major bruising all over your back and throat. With our unique treatment, we can get you healed up in tip top shape in no time. Do you want to apply for it?" She talked as if she was reading a notecard.

"I have to apply? Is it not included with my insurance?"

"Yes, but no. It is provided to all non-disabled citizens. However, now that I know you don't have a Birthright, I have to inform you it will cost quite a bit extra. I must make a habit of reading my patient's files more closely for this not to happen more often. My apologies." Saying this, she sounded more the robot than me.

Putting off her fake pitty, devoid of any emotion, I contemplated. Where were my parents when I needed them. Father is at home probably drinking again. While my mother just suffered a traumatic experience.

Wait.

"Excuse me, Ms. Stimpak?" I said ignoring the glare, "What about my mother, Mrs. Wright? Wasn't she admitted? She was there at the incident with me yesterday."

"Pardon? There was no Mrs. Wright admitted last night. The Hero Society Recovery Team picked you up in the middle of the street. The report says you were found alone. Slumped against a trash can. HSRT didn't find anything else." She answered carefully, not missing a single syllable.

"What? There's no way! I collapsed by my mother when-" I stopped.

Records say no one else was found near me. I was found slumped against a trash can in an alley. I could only come up with one possibility. I was moved.

I was found at night, but I had just gotten off school when the incident happened. I must play this cool. Something is definitely going on behind the scenes.

"Oh, my bad. I got confused, my thoughts are all jumbled together. I probably can't afford the special treatment. I'll just rest here for awhile if that's okay. I need to collect my thoughts."

"Go right ahead. It will take a day before you can leave. Even without the special treatment, we can get you on your feet fairly quick. Get some rest." She assured me.

After the help walked out of the room, did I then get a good look at my surroundings. I was in a four walled room. The color white coated the room. To desks, chairs, curtains, even the door. It was all very bland.

"Whoever decorated this room needs to step outside more often. Where's all the color? How am I supposed to feel comfortable in here?" I looked around, waiting for an answer.

After looking at all the white, my brain needed a break. So I closed my eyes and waited for some shut-eye. It never came.

*Bring Bring*

A telephone rang, awakening me from my dreadfulness. I guess sleep didn't come easy for someone struggling to breathe. I reached over to my left. Good thing the telephone was on the side with the usable hand.

"Cough*

"Hello? Who is this?" I spoke first.

"Hello, this is Headmaster Drake of Wyvern Academy. I'm calling today to offer a scholarship to a Mr. Wright. Are you Mr. Wright?" The voice sounded confident, the microphone crackling at his loud voice.

This was strange. Really strange. Why would I get a scholarship. I haven't applied. I just turned sixteen and am starting Junior Year at Wilbur Hill High School. My orientation was yesterday.

"Yes this is Oliver Wright. I was just wondering, I didn't apply to go to any academy."

Since, I couldn't afford it.

"Quite the contrary Mr. Wright. We chose you. Looking at you strictly on paper, you're one smart kid. Perfect scores on all the entry exams except math, and it says your career choice was Psychology? At our academy, our program has many experts in that field. The curriculum is bound to be the best available. We are offering you a full ride. Living expenses included. It is quite the deal I must say. The higher ups are quite insistent that you join us." His voice boomed with every sentence.

A full ride? That would help my family's position greatly. Although, this is suspicious. Why would this happen right after the incident? How did I end up where they found me? To my mother not being submitted, and Moonlight not being in proximity of the crime, just where did they go?

What exactly is going on here?

"Ah yes, I can assume I have a bit to decide? I just went through orientation yesterday, but school starts in a week. Do I have until then to decide?"

"You have 3 days. This is a one-time offer. Our school is worth it's admission, so this opportunity is a rare site. I recommend at least considering it. Let me know as soon as possible. You know where the academy is. I'll be in my office. Good day" His overbearing voice ending the call.

Wow. That is an opportunity. Let's hope I heal up fast so I can contact my father and see where my mother went. I hope everything is okay. My brain can barely handle what has happened today.

"Time to get some sleep!" I enthusiastically said while stretching my arms out. Wincing at the pain once again.
