198 I Haven't Been Enough Lately

Damon had refused to talk more about that night. After he admitted he couldn't be weak he took himself to the room I had when I originally came here. I was pissed he had been drunk but I tried to put my feelings aside because I knew it was more like a cry for help. He just needed to push his pride to the side and actually get the help needed. We couldn't live like this forever.

He spent the next week after trying to make it up to me in little ways. A couple gifts here and there, nothing too extreme. He even put together a small family dinner for my birthday tonight. I appreciated the gestures but it really didn't fix anything right now. What I wanted was my husband back one hundred percent.

"Are you ready Love?" Damon asked as he entered the room.

"Yes." I nodded as I looked at myself in the mirror. I chose to wear a black dress that hugged my bump. I went with a light makeup look and left my golden hair down in some loose curls.

He walked up behind me and placed his hands on my stomach. "A year ago I kept myself guarded and heartless, then two weeks later I saw you. You are everything, all three of you are. I'm just sorry I haven't been enough lately."

I turned myself around in his arms. "You are enough, but there is still progress to be made because of what happened. But it doesn't mean I love you any less."

His eyes looked into mine as he listened. He only broke eye contact when his lips brushed against mine. Our lips moved together in sync. I knew the love between us was still here. We were just going through a rough patch right now.

He pulled away and held my hand as we went down the stairs together. Martin had offered to allow Damon to have the dinner at his house. The only other person joining us would be my mother. It was the first time we would all be together since before he was shot.

We got into the black BMW and drove off in the direction of Martin's mansion. Sterling was in the back seat on his best behavior. He had avoided making Damon upset with him at all costs since that night at dinner. He really didn't like it when Damon yelled but he also shouldn't have to feel nervous to be around his father.

"How's the labor thing going?" Damon asked as he drove. He had been playing catch up at Tipton Enterprises so he wasn't able to come to this last appointment either.

"Good. He said since we hit thirty-six weeks this week that we're in a good place and can kind of relax a little more." I answered.

"Good." Damon nodded.

"She can still be here any time though." I added.

The rest of the drive was silent as we continued on. Finally we reached the driveway that wrapped around Martin's property. Damon parked the car as close to the door as he could for me. It was getting more and more uncomfortable to walk now that I was close to the end of the pregnancy. We got out of the car and ascended the steps that led to the door. Sterling rang the doorbell and I could tell he was excited to see Martin.

Davis opened the door. "Come in." he spoke as he moved out of the way.

Sterling took off inside the mansion. He stopped his running when he remembered Damon was behind him. He hesitantly looked back as if he expected to be reprimanded by his father. Damon noticed and his eyes met Sterling's.

"What are you waiting for? Go see him." Damon gave him the okay to continue on into Martin in a flat tone.

Sterling didn't waste the opportunity and started running into the living room once more. I could hear him greet Martin as we got closer to the living room where they were. My mother was already here as well, she sat on the other side of the room.

"Hey." She spoke as she stood up. She pulled me into a hug. "Happy birthday Kaybug."

"Thank you." I smiled as she pulled away.

Damon and I then took our own seats. I noticed Martin seemed to keep his eyes on Damon for a moment. Then his attention turned to me. "Quite a different birthday celebration this year isn't it?" He spoke.

"Yes." I responded.

Last year my birthday was spent with Justin. His parents were still around and I had yet to meet Damon. Damon and I were first introduced about two weeks after my birthday. That's when this rollercoaster started. It felt like it had been much longer but our life was just that crazy together.

"Sir, dinner is ready." Davis came into the living room to announce.

"Well, let's get to it then." Martin smiled as he got up.

We followed him to the dining room and took our seats. Damon sat across from me and Sterling was on the other side across from my mother. Martin took his usual seat at the head of the table. His staff had begun to bring the meal out to us.

"I had them make the chicken dish you like so much." Martin smiled as the plates were brought out to us.

"Thank you." I gave him a smile in return.

We all started to eat once all the food had been brought out. Sterling helped to keep our table entertained. He told Martin and my mother about all the things he had been learning in school. He also told him how excited he was for summer to come. We had been in talks with Mrs. Strahm for Sterling to go and be with the other children during the day. She agreed without a second thought, everyone loved Sterling there so they were excited he would be there more often soon.

We finished the meal and Martin's staff brought out the cake Damon had made for me. It was a chocolate cake with vanilla frosting. It was one of my favorite combinations and I couldn't wait to devour it with my family members. Martin, my mother and Sterling made sure to sing happy birthday to me before cutting it. Damon on the other hand sat back in silence.

Come to think of it, he had been silent the whole dinner. I knew he was trying his best right now but I could tell there was something going on in his mind. He seemed so distant and disconnected with everyone here. His face just seemed to have the same emotionless look since we left the house.

I tried to not let it affect the dinner he had planned but it was difficult. He had gone out of his way to plan this but didn't bother to seem like he was enjoying it. I was beginning to get a little frustrated. I wanted to know what he was thinking right now but I refused to cause a scene here at Martin's home. We would talk later.
