15 Big Brother Nidhogg

[NIDHOGG. Unknown place. Unknown time.]

Nidhogg's essence rested and recuperated within the divine idol shaped as a round jagged rock. Every now and then, it would send out part of its consciousness to investigate the surrounding world.

The first time Nidhogg explored, he was surprised at finding that the round jagged rock was being worshipped as a god by the decedent of the gnome he had accidently freed. He was pleased by this, as worship increased the strength of a divine idol that contained a divine essence. While Nidhogg couldn't use this strength to speed up his recovery, it was nonetheless beneficial. The stronger a divine idol, the harder it was to break. By telepathically instructing the gnomes to spread his worship, Nidhogg planned to make the divine idol as physically indestructible as possible.

The second time Nidhogg sent his consciousness out, he was startled to realise that the gnomes and their allies the dwarves and jotan, were engaged in a war with the orcs. What was truly shocking was part of the reason for this war was because the orcs worshipped a false Nidhogg who lived within an orc sacrificial alter.

Nidhogg realised that this false Nidhogg was actually one of his other splintered essences which had come to inhabit the orc alter upon which the first gnome sacrifice had been made. Not wishing to waste energy on battling against himself, the two Nidhogg essences asked for both sides to cease hostilities.

The third time Nidhogg awoke, he quickly realised that he was on a different world and now separated from the Nidhogg essence within the sacrificial alter. Furthermore, the gnomes alongside the jotan, were slaves of the dwarves. What's worse, was that the dwarves had captured the divine idol shaped like a round jagged rock and were trying to refine it. Only the divine idol's extreme durability kept it from being smelted.

Nidhogg managed to telepathically coordinate a slave revolt by the gnomes and jotan. Due to the existence of other powers, the dwarves were unable to focus on the revolt and ended up conceding the races their freedom. The jotan left and established their own kingdoms. While the gnomes agreed to remain part of the dwarven empire and provide their scholastic expertise, in exchange for the divine idol shaped like a round jagged rock.

Before returning to slumber, Nidhogg decided that the divine idol which was able to resist dwarven attempts at refining it, was probably as indestructible as it could possibly get. Thus, he asked the gnomes who knew of him to stop spreading his religion, in order to avoid being targeted by outside forces. These gnomes, and all other adherents of Nidhogg's religion, undertook a vow of silence and became know as the Silent Order.

The fourth and final time he woke up, Nidhogg found himself in front of a girl with heterochromatic eyes. He immediately thought that humans had somehow captured his divine idol and would try to do something evil to him. Although he doubted they could physically damage his divine idol, Nidhogg was well aware of the perverse imagination of human minds and feared they'd use some strange arcane art to try and extract his essence. The fact that his divine idol was splattered in blood, lent credence to his fear.

In order to protect himself, he began manifesting a body using the surrounding rocking material. The first thing to appear was his meter long, four clawed left hand. Seeming as if to form directly out of the arena floor. Following this hand came his arm. Then shoulders, head, wings, right arm, body, legs and finally his tail.

After fully manifesting, he measured twenty meters in length. Still pitiful when compared to his original form. But large enough to intimidate the tiny humanoids beneath him.

"I am Nidhogg the Devourer of…" Nidhogg started to shout but then paused.

He realised that he shouldn't announce his sudden arrival with a title that was known by his enemies. Instead he should use one known only by his allies. He started to quickly list through the most suitable names.

Nidhogg the Nibbler of Roots.

Nidhogg the Devourer of Squirrels.

Nidhogg Rainbow Bridge Fun-run Winner.

"You were saying something?" the girl with heterochromatic eyes craned her neck to look up at Nidhogg's face, which towered five meters above the ground. You said you were Nidhogg the Devourer of something. But we missed the last part. Was it Nidhogg the Devourer of Worlds?"

"What!" spluttered Nidhogg. "I didn't say anything like that! You were just so overwhelmed by my presence that you misheard."

"Okay!" shouted the girl with heterochromatic eyes. "So, what should I call you then?"

"Big Brother Nidhogg," said Nidhogg, thinking of a name unknown to his enemies but known to his closest allies.

"Alright!" said the heterochromatic eyed girl as she suddenly raised herself to her full stature. Which considering her shortness, wasn't really that impressive.

Then she pointed towards what looked like an undersized gorilla and shouted, "Squish that four armed golden storm ape!"

Nidhogg was just about to tell the short girl to stop ordering him around. However, a strange compulsion overtook him. He lifted his massive right hand and pressed down on the undersized gorilla with an oversized name.

The gorilla quaked in terror, too intimidated by the killing intent which Nidhogg directed towards it. Nidhogg felt the satisfying sensation of breaking bones as he trod the creature underfoot.

This action caused a fat guy to cheer. A girl to swear expletives which could make a pirate blush. And an elf of indeterminate gender to shout out; "Spontaneous summoning!"

However, all of this sensory data was quickly replaced by a feeling of pride and a desire to protect, as the short girl with heterochromatic eyes hugged his left leg and muttered, "Thank you Big Brother Nidhogg."
