Chapter 1: The Expedition Begins

Lena stood on the deck of the research vessel, her eyes scanning the icy waters of the Antarctic. It was cold, bitterly so, but she hardly noticed. She was too excited about what lay beneath the surface.

For as long as she could remember, Lena had been fascinated by the ocean. As a child, she would spend hours combing the beaches near her home, collecting shells and studying the creatures that washed up on shore. As she grew older, her interest deepened, and she pursued a degree in marine biology.
