ZOEY's POV.
My heartbeats slowed down as the room grew quiet. I have to say, today was one of the worst days of my life.
I appreciated the fact that Roy stood out for me. I never expected him to say anything to stop the voices. He was very influential if he could control every person in the room by just saying a few words. That was so cool.
I looked down resisting the urge to look at him but I couldn't anymore after looking down for a few seconds. I raised my head and my eyes found their way to where he sat down like the king he was. I had calmed down completely because for some reason I felt convinced he would not let anyone yell at me again. I felt safe enough to get relaxed and to have a bit of confidence.
He was looking at his phone and I couldn't help but notice how handsome he was at the moment. Then I thought, anyone who saw Alex would agree with me even right now even without getting to see Roy. She was a female version of him and she was the most beautiful girl in the world. But their difference was that Roy solely had this long cold face I thought was a waste of his handsome features. Why be handsome and not smile? I just didn't understand.
Right when I was admiring his face, he looked up and our eyes met. My heart skipped a beat for being caught red-handed staring. I looked away immediately not being able to maintain eye contact with him. I still hated him, if it were not for him, I wouldn't have been in a mess in the first place.
I saw Marcus from the corner of my eyes and I blew out a glad breath. Finally, he got back. It felt like he had been gone for ages. He helped me connect the charger to my laptop and then left me to deal with the rest.
I found the project and I started illustrating step by step the codes, the errors and the advantages of using certain steps and also explained alternatives to the steps.
It was useful, I did the work after going home, and it didn't matter that I slept late. I didn't know what I would have done if I had been blank at the moment. Unfortunately after finishing the work, I forgot to charge the laptop and got myself in a big mess but it would been worse if I hadn't done the work.
I got lucky because I was sure Roy would have fired me immediately. I still was not sure if he was not going to fire me yet, I didn't have that much confidence in my presentation. It was my first, I wasn't sure I was doing it right.
When I was done, I looked down waiting for questions or complaints but what I heard was the sound of a clap. I frowned and I looked up to look at the person clapping only to be met with a smiling....wait...Nick? What was Nick doing here? Was he here the whole time?
I blinked surprised when others followed and the conference room was filled with the sound of people clapping. Why were they clapping? It was not like I did a magnificent job. I had no confidence in myself.
I looked at where Roy sat but he was not clapping and his face looked like he could kill someone. I sighed dejected, I knew it. I didn't do a good job. I sadly closed my laptop and waited to be told to leave or was I supposed to tell myself to leave?
"I will make a decision, in our next meeting. There are still changes to be made to come up with the perfect codes for this app which is our current project now. You are all dismissed."Roy said after everyone stopped slapping.
Everyone started leaving and I too assumed that it was time I left too but taking a few steps, Roy called my name.
"Where are you going, Miss Zoey?" he asked and I stopped. I feared he might call me but I feared what he was going to say to me the most.
I sighed and turned around to look at him. By this time, everyone had left except Marcus but then when I thought he would stay, he left and now it was just me and Roy.
"You need something boss?"I decided to ask since he didn't initiate the talk. This guy was very weird, he was the one who called me and he was silent now as if he was not the one who called.
"Good job," he said and I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion wondering if I was hearing him right.
"Sorry?"I had to confirm if I was the one with a hearing problem.
Roy looked at me and my heart beat so fast as I waited for him to say those words I thought I heard." I hoped you could disappoint so that I fire you." he said again. He wasn't going to repeat what he said, was he? Was it going to kill him to repeat two words?
I wanted to roll my eyes but recalling he kind of enunciated I still had the job, I smiled. It felt nice to be sure because the mess I made, caused me to doubt if I still had the job.
"What is so funny?" he asked and then I stopped smiling. I wasn't allowed to be happy or was he too dumb to realise I was happy because of what he said?
"Nothing, boss."I shook my head not daring to ask my thoughts out loud.
He looked at me and I swear I could feel very conscious of his stare at my hair. Why was he staring at it?" You couldn't ask your girlfriend to remind you to charge your laptop after running away yesterday to meet her?" he suddenly asked.
I frowned confused at what he was talking about. My girlfriend? I didn't have a liking to women if that's what he thought. Why would he even think that in the first place?" I think you are misunderstanding me, boss, I am not the type who likes women."I cleared up the misconception I thought he had about me.
He didn't say anything as he stood up from his chair." Who were you calling sweetheart and baby yesterday?" he asked.
I panicked when I finally understood why he thought I liked women. He heard my conversation with Alex yesterday." I uuh... I was talking to my best friend. We are very close."I told him the only explanation that came to my head. I couldn't tell him I was speaking with my daughter.
He nodded and I assumed he believed me."About the project you just presented, I want you to substitute those alternative codes you explained. I thought your version was better, it provides a much better security system for the users of the app. Write up the codes and come up with a perfect app that you will again present in the next meeting." he said and he started walking away.
I ran after him smiling because he said he liked my version better. I felt good to be praised." Boss..."I called after him."Thank you for defending me."I told him still walking behind him because he did not stop.
"I would have done that for any other stupid employee like you," he said and I frowned. Why did he always have to be cruel and cut my joy short?
I walked behind him brooding and just when we stepped out of the conference room, I heard a familiar voice call my name."Zoey..."Nick called and I stopped in my track my heart skipping a beat. I hated these coincidences with him just like how I hated him as a person.
