It Was Intuition (Part 1)

Chapter 16: Intuition

5:30 PM.

The No. 37 Beast Tamer High School.

At 5:33 PM, a large group of students walked out of the school gate, chatting and laughing in pairs or threes.

"Shall we compete right here?" a slightly deep voice rang out.

After nearly an hour of reading, Riley finally got his first inquiry.

He raised his head and saw a tall and mascular figure standing in front of him. A snake-like Spirit Beast, as thick as a fist and of a purple color, coiled around his waist and spiraled up to his neck, revealing its triangular head.

It was a Boatora, an evolved form of a Liboa.

Riley took a quick look, then took out a pen from his backpack and added a few words to the paper.

[ Only for Beginner level Spirit Beasts ]

The tall and mascular individual clicked his tongue and left without saying much words.

With the first one, the second soon followed. Another person approached.

This time, it was a cheerful-looking girl. She came up to Riley, scratching her head with a somewhat blushinh look, and said, "I don't want money if I win. Can I exchange it for your contact information?"

Riley agreed readily, saying, "Sure."

Not having to pay was even better. His entire fortune added up to only 532 League Coins, just enough for a few rounds of games. He needed to save some money for the trip back home.

Next to the girl stood someone with a spiky hairstyle, wearing an expression of curiosity. Obviously, she was the girl's friend.

"Let's go over there and have a match," the spiky-haired friend suggested, pointing at a poplar tree in South River Park.

The location they were in, the entrance and exit of South River Park, was always bustling with people coming and going after school. It wasn't a suitable place for a battle.

Riley followed the direction the spiky-haired friend was pointing and nodded.

The three of them arrived under the poplar tree, and it was quite secluded, with no one visible within about 20 meters.

"I'll be the referee," the spiky-haired friend volunteered.

Riley naturally had no objections.

The girl made a summoning gesture, and a Dovely, about 80 centimeters tall, with a white body, appeared within the white star array.

Ordinary Dovelys are around 60 centimeters in height, but the one before them had clearly been well nurtured.

"Joanna, any objections to letting the boy attack first?" the spiky-haired friend asked.

Different matches had different rules, some predetermined who initiated the attack, while others didn't mind who went first.

"Of course not," Joanna shrugged and replied. She believe on her own strength, so letting the opponent attack first wouldn't be a problem for her.

As the referee, the spiky-haired friend chose Riley to go first, and Riley didn't hesitate. He immediately said, "Fire Dog, use Spark."

"Bark!"

The Fire Dog jumped out of Riley's arms, its eyes instantly becoming sharp, and it released a reddish-orange flame about the size of a baby's fist.

In the face of this sudden attack, Joanna didn't give any commands. The Dovely remained calm, and as the Spark was about to land on it, it jumped to the left, dodging it with just a couple of small moves.

Dovelys were known for being slow, but the one in front of them wasn't particularly fast either. However, its reaction was good, evading the attack with minimal movement, indicating that it has been doing the targeted training.

As Riley analyzed the situation, he continued with his commands, "Charge."

The Fire Dog exerted its limbs and charged ahead.

"Fly up and use Screech," Joanna gave his first command.

The Dovely flapped its small wings and took off into the air.

The Fire Dog hadn't undergone any training, so its attack speed wasn't very fast. The Dovely was already in mid-air when it reached halfway with its charge.

"Dovely!"

Screeching was a relatively common move that couldn't directly cause harm in battle; it could only briefly disrupt the opponent.

To Riley, the sound was just a bit annoying, but the Fire Dog hesitated for a moment, and its speed slightly decreased.

"Aerial Charge," Joanna promptly issued the next command.

Aerial Charge was an exclusive move for flying-type Spirit Beasts, similar to the Charge movr that used by ground-based Spirit Beasts. The key difference lay in the fact that the Charge move relied solely on the physical power of the Spirit Beast's limbs, while Aerial Charge could harness the flow of air to generate a far more potent impact than an ordinary Charge move.

The Dovely tucked its wings backward, and with a whistling sound, a cyclone of air formed around it as it rushed straight directly toward the Fire Dog.
