Chapter 4: Pro-Bending and Outburst
'Jiran is a genius.' Tenzin said inside his head after witnessing the latter weave through the contraption with ease as if he was just taking a walk in the park.
It took him many months to accomplish the same feat yet Jiran did it on his first time, without any prior experience at that.
His father, probably the greatest avatar and airbender has called him an airbending genius but after witnessing Jiran, Tenzin thought that maybe he wasn't.
'I must nurture Jiran to assist Korra, to be a companion the same way father had his friends with him' Tenzin said inside his mind resolutely.

Korra was frustrated. People have regarded her as a genius of bending, it was of course given to her since she's the avatar, yet even though she was extremely talented she can't airbend.
It was a widely known fact that the hardest element of an avatar to master is the one most opposite to their personality. She can accept that airbending is hard for her since she have a very rough personality, what she can't accept is how talented Jiran is.
Jiran has the same personality as her, maybe even more extreme yet he can do airbending exercises with ease.
If that brute can do it then why can't she? This situation made her very frustrated.
"Airbending! Come on! Air come out!" Korra kept pushing her arms in front of a cut out picture of Lin Beifong but no matter how much she did, no air came out of her arms.
"Why won't air come out!!!" She shouted until her frustration reached her and just burned the paper with firebending.
The next morning the same thing happened to Korra. No matter how much she focuses, or at least tries to focus she can't airbend while in comparison, Jiran was doing much, much better than her, when it comes to meditation or anything monk-like the latter does a 180 degree change.
Later on that evening as she was trying to airbend, Korra heard the radio broadcasting a Pro Bending match.
Pro-Bending is a popular underground sport originating in the Imperial City that involves two teams of three benders, a waterbender, a firebender, and an earthbender, seeing as the airbenders do not take part due to their beliefs and because only six airbenders existed during this time.
And Korra being combat oriented became a fan of Pro-Bending. So when she heard that there was a match a sudden thought came into mind.
Tenzin forbade her to watch or even listen to a Pro-Bending match deeming it "a mockery of the noble tradition of bending" which just made her more frustrated. But seeing that no one was looking and the Pro-Bending Arena is just one ferry away from the Air Temple Island or for Korra, just one swim away, a decision was made that moment.
She looked left, right, up and down. Her eyes wander to the Temple and to the arena back and forth.
And when she saw no one was watching, she decided.
"Hup!"
Splash!
Korra jumped into the water and by using water bending she propelled herself in the water becoming as fast as the boat.
On one of the tall trees an eye watched her leave, he was hidden in an obscure position with dark shadow casting behind him so he was very hard to notice.
"This is going to be troublesome."
"Oh well, not my problem," The figure muttered. Then he raised his foot back to the branch and laid lower while eating an apple.
On the Pro-Bending Arena: One thing led to another. And somehow Korra managed to befriend this guy called Bolin, to which granted her special access to their Pro-Bending training ground and vip seats to Pro-Bending Matches.
After that morning once again came, the dreadful time for airbending which Korra hated to the heart once again started.
"Ugh!"
"Ack!"
"Ouch!"
"Owww!"
Yeah and like every other session she failed horribly.
"That's it!!" Suddenly Korra started spewing out fire from her hands striking all of the Air Gate in the contraption.
"Ahhhh!!" She punched her and there releasing fire every time until
"Arghh!" Fire spurted out from her kick and with that the last gate was destroyed.
"Huff, huff, huff,"
In her outburst, Tenzin watched with wide eyes as well as Jiran.
"That is a two thousand year old historical treasure… what… WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU!?" Tenzin roared.
"I can't airbend okay!! No matter what I do, no matter how much I follow your instructions I still can't airbend!"
"I did all that stupid meditation and shit and still can't whip out a wisp of wind!"
"You know what? Maybe the reason why I can't airbend is because you are a horrible teacher!" She outbursts then walks away while stomping her foot.
"Korra!!" Tenzin tried to stop her but she was already far away.
"Tough nut to crack huh," Jiran nonchalantly said to Tenzin which made the latter look at him.
"Why can't she be like you? You two have have almost the same personality but you can airbend while Korra can't" Tenzin sighed and said helplessly.
Hearing the latter, Jiran thought and said.
"Maybe all she needs is a different environment to learn, Korra is a rough nut, no amount of meditation will go through her head. That's how I learned, I learned how to airbend to fend off for myself, maybe she needs to be more engaged in combat activity or stuff, I don't know" Jiran said and after leaving his wisdom he walked away to mind his own business.
Korra can outburst all she wants as long it doesn't bother him he's okay with what she does.
Later on that evening Korra once again snuck out of the Air Temple Island, of course Jiran still didn't mind her since she was not his business to mind.
But after feeling a gust of wind behind him he turned his head and asked.
"Tenzin. What are you doing here at my tree?" Kiran asked.
"Where is Korra?" Tenzin asked madly. Jiran shrugged and pointed at the Arena.
"That! That woman!" Bursted Tenzin in anger. Then he jumps down the tree and gestures at Jiran.
"What? Why are you gesturing at me?" Jiran asked, confused.
"Because you're coming with me!" Tenzin stated sternly.
"Why? It's none of my business" Jiran said with an incredulous face.
"You saw Korra and you let her snuck out without care, in addition to your irresponsibility, it is your business." Reasoned Tenzin which made the latter sigh helplessly.
"Tsk. Okay, you win." He jumped down the tree.

Somehow, yeah, somehow Korra managed to get herself a match in the Pro-Bending Match. She was with the Fire Ferrets with this dude called Mako, a firebender and an earthbender named Bolin. Apparently the third dude that was supposed to be their third player bailed out at the last minute, so Korra being the only waterbender in the room pleaded with the two to let her join.
They were losing the match, thanks to Korra being extremely inexperienced, making them lose both first and second round. However, before the third round began, Tenzin confronted Korra. Tenzin "ordered", ordered because Tenzin finally realized being gentle with Korra was useless.
But that stubborn bull didn't budge and insisted that she should stay to finish the match. Frustrated and tired, Tenzin let her be but it turns out Korra managed to win the final round.
She just started bobbing and weaving, making spiral movements the same way on the Air Gate Contraption.
And that's when Tenzin realized, maybe Korra just needed the right environment.
After that a character development dialogue between the two happened. Tenzin let Korra train in the Pro-Bending match and Korra took the airbending lesson more seriously.
All funs and dandy for the two but not for me. Tenzin scolded me, and I mean severely scolded me because I let Korra be. He said that as her companion I should've stop Korra.
Well that's bullshit, but I can't get angry at the dude. He gives me three meals a day and with snacks at that so I can't get mad at the hands that feed me. So I just took the blunt force of his scolding and let it be.
The moral of the story is. Never let Korra be.
