3 Chapter 3

Chapter 3: Air Temple Island

Short end of the story, Korra will stay and I too will stay at the Air Temple Island. I was hesitant at first but Tenzin said that I would be able to eat three times a day if I stayed there so who am I to reject?

And with that I decided to stay there. But there's just one problem.

"What!? What do you mean I'm gonna have to train with her?" I shouted in protest.

"You hear me perfectly clear, Jiran. You are to be trained alongside the avatar." Tenzin the bald guy replied to me with his old man tone.

"I don't wanna be with that… brute" I pointed at Korra.

"Hey now, Jiran, you should not call Korra like that. She may be unruly but… you can't call her brute."

Yeah, I bet Tenzin's agreeing with me on the inside. I can see it on his face.

"I don't want to train with hobos like you either!" Korra shouted back.

"Hey!

"Stop it you two!" Tenzin said which stopped us both from bickering.

"Sigh. Just follow me,"

Tenzin guided us to a site in the Air Temple Island with weird gate contraptions all inside a wide circle.

"Let's begin your first lesson." After we arrived we were greeted by three overly energetic young kids.

They were Tenzin's kids and from what I hear another one is coming, this old dog. Even at his age he's still going strong.

Their names from what I remember was Jinora, the oldest one, Ikki the playful and energetic middle child and Meelo the replica of Ikki, just male and younger.

"Jiran! Korra!" Ikki excitedly greeted us while hopping up and down.

"Are you two finally gonna start airbending training?" She asked.

I just nodded at her, I don't want to answer her verbally because if I did she may drag me to a long annoying conversation.

"What is that contraption?" Korra asked, pointing at the weird gate thingy. Nice one korra, you asked what I was going to.

"A time honored tool that teaches the most fundamental aspect of airbending, Jinora would you like to explain this exercise?" Old man Tenzin said.

Then Jinora, the oldest child, stepped up and started speaking.

"The goal is to weave your way through gates and make it to the other side without touching them," Jinora said.

Hearing Jinora's explanation, I nodded, I know there's something more than making it all the way to the otherside. This is a training after all so there must be something chaLlenging about it otherwise it wouldn't be called training.

"Seems easy enough" Korra said while smirking. Yeah, I'm pretty sure you're gonna eat those words soon, Korra.

"Jinora forgot to say that you have to make it through all the gates while spinning," Ikki replied.

Yeah, I was right, there was something more.

Then as if waiting on cue, Tenzin stepped up and drew his breath while weaving his arm in a spiral motion, then he pushed both of his palms releasing a gust of wind. The gust of wind struck the stationary gates making them spin.

Tenzin then grabbed a leaf floating in the air and gently pushed it towards the contraption with a small and gentle gust.

I was amazed, not by the airbending but by the movement of the leaf. It effortlessly got into the otherside smoothly without grazing or being hit by the gates. It was so smooth that it felt like it moved on water, not in mid air.

"The key is to be like the leaf. Flow with the movement of the gates"

"Jinora, will you demonstrate?" Jinora then rushed into the spinning gates and entered smoothly.

Like walking in a park, Jinora weaved through the contraction while spinning and moving with footwork, passing through the gates without being hit by any of the gates.

"Airbending is all about spiral movement, when you meet resistance you must be able to switch directions at moments notice" After finishing his narration, Jinora successfully passed the contraption smoothly.

Clap! Clap! Clap!

"Nice going Jinora!" I clapped and praised her. What she did was pretty impressive.

Hearing me clap at her, Jinora bend her head down and smiled with red face.

"Okay, let's do this!" Sigh, classic idiot heading in without any preparation.

After Tenzin finished his narration, Korra, like a foolish bull, charged immediately at the contraption.

Which didn't end well for her.

Wack!

Pack!

Wack!

Flack!

Her face was flattened. I was impressed by how she managed to get hit at every step, and I came to admire just how smack resistant her face is. Impressive.

After being hit at every turn Korra came out of it, with red face, bruised and batter, alongside with lost dignity.

Well she did make it to the otherside, not just unharmed.

"HAHAHAHAHA!" Seeing her misery I can't help but burst into laughter.

Korra glared at me but that won't do anything.

"PUAHAHAHAHA!" I was purposely making my laugh louder to make her more embarrass.

"This is comedy gold! How is it scientifically possible for someone to get hit by every gate in every moment!"

"I'd like to see you try, hobo!" She rebutted.

"Oh, I'm gonna try it alright. And I'm gonna completely crush you!" I declared then I copied Jinora's earlier movement and approached the spinning contraption.

"Watch me."

I focused, removing all thoughts and distraction within. Korra's red face, the beautiful woman I saw last week, the horrible hairline of monks, the noise of the chirping bird, I removed them all with only the thought of the weaving leaf remaining.

I closed my eyes. And then I heightened my senses feeling the gentle flow of the wind then slowly I stepped inside.

Immediately I felt the wind produced by the spinning gate. And with that detection I managed to evade through by spinning and making spiral footwork.

And then, like the leaf I weaved through the contraption as smooth as the wind. I felt each of the spinning of the gates, and I avoided each and one of them.

And before I could even feel it, I'm already on the other side. Unharmed.

After I opened my eyes, I saw Tenzin, Jinora, Korra, Ikki and Meelo all staring. at me with wide eyes

"Hah! Easy!" I shouted triumphantly.

"Not so talented after all, Avatar."

"Don't be so smug! I can beat you in any other element aside from wind"

"Well that's only because I can "only" bend wind. If I can bend other elements you'd be eating dust" I replied smugly.

Tenzin still has his incredulous look at him. Not gonna lie, I am indeed very impressed that I can shock even the son of the previous avatar.
