39 Escaping the Encirclement

The SUV showed its might. Its steel skeleton roared as it crushed the monsters and the mutated animals in its path. The clean SUV was immediately stained with the blood and flesh of these creatures.

When they were about to leave the rest stop, Lorne took out his M4A1 and aimed at an oil barrel beside the gas station. Then, he pulled the trigger.

Boom!

Raging flames instantly surrounded the rest stop. The monsters inside were also enveloped by the flames and turned into flame sources, further strengthening the flames.

A huge heat wave spread out from the center of the gas station, instantly raising the temperature. Thick smoke enveloped the entire rest stop.

A burning smell flowed in the air and slowly spread as the air flowed.

Most of the monsters that had gathered at the gas station were burnt to death, and the remaining monsters could only flee.

Watching from the SUV, Lorne heaved a sigh of relief as he watched the monsters slowly being devoured by the flames.

He had only wanted to bring Dewey and Sally away, but when he saw the gas station, he suddenly had this thought.

If he just left, the monsters might chase after him, and the gas station would give him a chance to exterminate them.

This result was beyond Lorne's expectations. The explosion of the gas station had killed so many monsters.

Seeing so many monsters die, Lorne's first thought was that he was rich. How many points would the crystal cores of so many monsters add up to?

"Boss, you're really awesome," Dewey clearly saw the damage caused by Lorne's actions and said excitedly.

"A simple matter…" Seeing Dewey's admiration for him, Lorne took out a cigarette and lit it before saying lightly.

The few of them quietly watched as the monsters were devoured by the flames. 30 minutes later, the flames began to weaken, and the monster's screams gradually disappeared. Lorne then brought the siblings to the rest stop to gather crystal cores.

When they returned to the rest stop, everything was already in ruins. The walls that were still standing were slowly falling off, stained with the blood of many monsters.

The ground became uneven, and the broken limbs and flesh of the survivors and the monsters were scattered everywhere.

There were still some monsters who were not dead and were struggling at death's door. When they saw Lorne's group, they still wanted to open their mouths and attack them. Lorne shot them down.

Human flesh and blood seemed to have a fatal attraction to these monsters. Also, when these monsters encountered mutated creatures, they might be able to command them to fight together. Therefore, they had to be dealt with cleanly.

"Dewey, you should know where the monster's crystal core is, right? Collect all the crystal cores here. If you encounter a monster that is not completely dead, use your shotgun to send it to God."

After killing a few monsters, Lorne turned to Dewey.

"Alright, Boss." Dewey quickly followed Lorne's instructions and collected the crystal cores.

The two of them were very fast. In ten minutes, they had gathered all the crystal cores in the rest stop.

"Good work," Lorne said to him as he took the crystal cores that Dewey had collected.

"Boss, if it weren't for you, I would have lost my life today. This little work is nothing. Also, boss, don't forget that my life is yours now."

Dewey had originally thought that Lorne was not qualified to be his boss, but after the battle just now, Dewey realized how terrifying this man was. So, he spoke sincerely.

Looking at Dewey's respectful gaze, Lorne felt that the battle had not been in vain. He was touched and gently punched Dewey's shoulder.

"Good brat!"

"Alright, stop being so emotional. Let's go." Lorne got the siblings into the SUV and left the rest stop.

The SUV was moving quickly on the road. Lorne led the siblings to his shelter. After an entire night of travel, Lorne had already driven more than 300 kilometers on the road.

"Let's take a break," Lorne stopped the SUV and said to Dewey and Sally who were sleeping in the backseat.

"Boss, are we there?" Dewey asked as he felt the SUV stop and rubbed his eyes.

"Not yet. Let's take a break and eat something," Lorne said. Then he took out food and water from the back of the SUV and shared them with Dewey and Sally.

"Has the radio broadcast been restored?" Lorne who was eating with Whitey asked curiously when he saw Dewey running to the front of the SUV and adjusting the radio.

"Yes, it was restored the day before yesterday. We should be able to listen to the news after some adjustments." Dewey replied. He then switched the radio on and slowly adjusted the radio frequencies.

"Done," Dewey suddenly said happily after three minutes.

Lorne heard Dewey's voice and turned to look in Dewey's direction. He realized that the radio in the car was working.

"This is Cosmos City's military base. This is a news broadcast from Cosmos City's military base. Everyone in Cosmos City and nearby areas, please pay attention if you are hearing the announcement."

"If you hear the broadcast and are not in Cosmos City's shelter, please come to Cosmos City's military base immediately."

"People who are in the shelters and have not been moved to the military base, please come to the military base immediately when you hear the announcement. Our military base will provide you with living quarters and food."

"Our base will release a large number of airdrop bags in the surrounding areas and even further away. There are food kits and weapons in the airdrop bags for people who are not in the military base. Please use the things in the airdrop bag to come to the military base as soon as possible."

"Cosmos City's military base. Come to Cosmos City's military base. Everyone in Cosmos City and its surroundings, please pay attention. If you are hearing this announcement, please come to Cosmos City's military base immediately to seek refuge. We will provide you with living quarters and food."

The radio channel played the information broadcast by the military base over and over again.

"What is this military base? Aren't people living in shelters? Why do they suddenly want us to go to the military base?" Lorne asked Dewey after listening to the broadcast.

"Boss, you didn't hear the broadcast on the first day, right? This military base is actually a city built by relying on shelters."

"It seems like there will be more disasters in the future. Moreover, the animals in this world are constantly changing. In order to fight off these dangers, the government built these military bases. Each city will have one or a few to protect the people."

"The previous shelters were only to avoid the meteorite disaster, but now, the meteorite disaster isn't the main thing. The main disaster is still this damned weather and those mutated creatures."

Dewey clearly realized that the weather was turning cold.

"Oh, I see." Lorne understood.

It seemed like the country had also realized the power of these mutated animals and the sudden appearance of those monsters.

If they only relied on the shelters that had no defensive measures, it would probably cause a lot of casualties. Just the mutation of the mice that were being treated as food might cause a huge loss.

As expected of the government, they have prepared a solution so quickly. Lorne sighed in his heart.

"Boss, are we going to the military base? I heard that the defense measures there are very strong. We don't need to worry about natural changes and monster attacks."

Seeing that Lorne was deep in thought, Dewey thought that he was considering whether he should go to the military base to take refuge.
