12 Upgrading Once Again

This situation was near impossible. The internal network of the law enforcement unit possessed information about everyone in the country unless the person was born after the apocalypse. However, Wu Peng clearly did not fit those criteria.

That meant that there were only two possibilities. The first was that Wu Peng was lying about his name and that 'Wu Peng' was not his real name, or the second was that Wu Peng's identity was extremely unique and that the information regarding his identity was highly confidential.

No matter which of those options it was, it made Ye Wei's curiosity toward him grow even more.

Fortunately, she had a tracking device installed on Wu Peng's body. This way, there was no way that he could escape out of Ye Wei's hands.

The day passed, a new day began.

Wu Peng woke up early and headed toward the base of the law enforcers after he had breakfast.

He successfully found his way to the base using his superhuman memory even though he had only been there once and was blindfolded during his first journey there.

After the previous incident, Wu Peng had become a famous figure within the law enforcers' base.

He embarrassed Number 842 and had a casual chat with Captain Wei before he left the base in an unrestrained manner. That was the first time something like that had happened in the base.

After he got the law enforcer guarding the gate to notify Ye Wei of his arrival, Wu Peng entered the base as if he was stepping into his home.

"Mister Wu Peng, I did not notify you to come." Ye Wei still looked icy-cold, though her eyes were a little red and swollen, as she only slept a little last night after she had been searching for information regarding Wu Peng.

"Don't be so uptight. Actually, you look even better when you smile," Wu Peng said smugly.

"Please go back if you have nothing to do here," Ye Wei turned to leave when Wu Peng quickly stopped her.

"Viper. How much do you know about them?" he asked her quickly.

"How did you know…" Ye Wei only realized that she had slipped up when she was in the middle of speaking.

"It's Viper. Captain Ye, would you be so kind as to share the information with me?" Wu Peng asked, wanting to know more.

"That's classified information and you are a suspect in the case. I have nothing to tell you."

Wu Peng knew that she would say that and immediately tossed out his bait. "You must be anxious that the core installation is lost. However, while your subordinates are good at fighting wars and killing people, they are not very good at solving cases. You might as well team up with me if you want to find the core installation as soon as possible."

This sentence hit Ye Wei right at her weakest spot. She understood all too well just how useful her subordinates were in this matter. They were all like Li Kui. They could charge in the frontlines, but they were basically useless if the task required them to use their brains.

After a moment's deliberation, Ye Wei accepted Wu Peng's suggestion.

She brought him into her office and took out the information that regarded Viper.

Wu Peng immediately flipped through the file and read it closely. However, his brows became knitted tighter and tighter the more he read about it. "This information is not much more than what I read online."

Ye Wei sighed, "Isn't that obvious? Would we still need you if we have detailed information about the organization?"

The two of them slipped into momentary silence.

Finally, Wu Peng spoke first, "I'll go investigate at the scene again. Notify me if there are any developments. Viper is not only your enemy, they are also my enemy."

Ye Wei nodded in approval, and Wu Peng left the base of the law enforcers.

Just like that, Wu Peng went over and looked for Ye Wei every day to discuss the progress of the case.

Wu Peng had slowly amassed 2000 points.

Wu Peng arrived at the base of the law enforcers as usual and saw that Ye Wei had a stern expression. "Follow me."

He followed Ye Wei into the surveillance room. The large screen in the surveillance room displayed all of the sectors in Jiang City. Currently, a large portion of the screen was dark.

"There are three satellite signal receivers in Jiang City. The one that Qin Ming's team was in charge of is damaged, and we lost the signal of another receiver just now." Ye Wei explained.

"Viper took action again?" Wu Peng asked while he felt like he already knew the answer.

"It's very possible, but what's their purpose of snatching these receivers?" Ye Wei pondered.

Right then, a member of the law enforcement unit sprinted into the room, "Report! We have lost contact with one of the repair teams!"

Ye Wei and Wu Peng looked at each other. The former immediately ordered the law enforcers to move out, but this time, Ye Wei was personally leading the team.

Wu Peng signaled that he wanted to head there with them. Ye Wei hesitated for a moment before she agreed to his request.

Wu Peng followed the law enforcement team's vehicle to the scene.

He saw the corpses of four repairmen and two guards lying on the ground.

Wu Peng charged forward and arrived in front of a corpse, and quickly investigated it. "The bullet holes on this corpse are the same as those on Qin Ming and the rest!"

Ye Wei ordered the team to move the corpses over to the vehicle while she took out her binoculars and observed the surroundings. She finally locked her gaze on a small hill in the distance, "The enemy must have attacked from there."

She led the rest of the team over to the hill after she finished her sentence.

Wu Peng did not follow her. Instead, he started to investigate the satellite receiver and confirmed that the core installation had been stolen.

Sometime later, Ye Wei returned with her men. "We didn't find anything. The battlefield was cleaned very thoroughly. They didn't even leave bullet shells behind."

Wu Peng let out a long breath. Viper's actions were all very well thought out. They did not leave any openings behind.

However, this ignited the flame in Wu Peng's heart. A formidable opponent made all of these more meaningful.

After they cleaned up the scene, Wu Peng, Ye Wei, and the rest of the team returned to the base.

"Now that it has come to this, I should have been cleared of all suspicion, right?" Ye Wei's expression turned dark and she remained silent when she heard Wu Peng's words.

In her heart, Wu Peng was surrounded by a heavy, mysterious fog.

If not for that she had more important matters to attend to, she would be the first one to capture Wu Peng and interrogate him thoroughly.

Wu Peng shrugged when he saw that Ye Wei did not speak. He knew that she still did not trust him.

After he returned to his little den, Wu Peng laid down on his bed and closed his eyes in thought.

Why did Viper want to snatch the core installation? Even if they managed to steal the core installation, why did they have to kill the members of the repair team?

Wu Peng suddenly had a stroke of inspiration. Could it be that they had understood everything in reverse?

Viper's targets were not the core installation. Instead, it was to kill the repairmen. They only stole the core installation to divert their attention.

What was Viper's motive for killing the members of the repair teams?

Based on what Ye Wei had told him, Jiang City or Shelter J had a total of three satellite stations. Now, two of them were not operational.

If they stole the core installation from the last station and killed the repair team there, then Jiang City would completely lose connection with the outside world. When that time comes, Jiang City would be an isolated entity.

If the law enforcers did not receive aid from the outside world, Jiang City would fall under Viper's control after they ambushed the law enforcers.

Even though this was only Wu Peng's guess, he could not rule out that possibility.

Currently, the enemy was lurking in the shadows while Ye Wei was exposed. The situation would be extremely disadvantageous if this was to continue.

They had to come up with a countermeasure as soon as possible. It would be best if they could keep their eyes on the last station without alerting their enemies.

Wu Peng fought back the pain and pressed on the option to upgrade the station.
