The driver must have been living in the safe zone since the outbreak of the apocalypse, quickly cleared of zombies by the military. Thus, he truly didn't understand the cruelty of the apocalyptic world.

Howard didn't engage with the driver's remarks, especially since he himself had cleared out a supermarket at the beginning of the apocalypse. Such actions were common in the apocalypse, done purely for survival.

However, this was the safe zone, where robbery was a serious crime, and Howard had no interest in revealing his past misdemeanors.

It was like returning to civilization from the wilderness; even if pretending, he had to appear benevolent.
