3 The Note

Jack and David enter the house, Jack's short legs struggling to keep up with David's long strides. They are struck by a remarkable sense of calm as they enter, and immediately realise that the police officer was right. This was a place that had not witnessed any violent methods of kidnapping, and was only marred by the evidence of the note, which was scribbled on a piece of paper which had been hastily torn off. David immediately turns to the police officer and asks him how they knew that this was a kidnap. The police officer, thinking that David was mocking the force, retorts by saying,"Melanie had been missing for over 3 days. The last she had been seen was on Monday, the 30th of July. She left for work but never came back. Her family had attempted to contact her several times over these three days and finally, out of desperation, called the police. We came to her house and found it locked. We looked through the window, and when we found this note, called our superiors." David, taken aback with the officer's retort realises his mistake and apologises. He observed the layout of the house and noticed that the note could be seen through the window, and the handwriting couldn't have been Melanie's as there were many other samples of her own in the house. David gets a list of Melanie's friends and family and hands it over to Jack. He immediately begins calling them one by one and gets their addresses. David goes through the house meticulously and finally leaves, Jack behind him.

Once outside, David ponders about the note. Jack reads his mind and tells him, "it could be someone within the family. We need to talk to all of the nearest members." David nods his agreement and they both go away. As they walk, David remembers his own past and stows the thoughts away as quickly as they came. The thoughts vanish. The pain doesn't.
