Chapter 10: C

Inside the main office of the Chaos Insurgency James Bancroft was reporting the success of the latest experiment. The Insurgency did not care whether they harmed human life or any other, all they cared about were results. And Bancroft was constantly bringing in results. Within the period of him entering the Insurgency, Bancroft had been promoted to the 2nd highest position along with many other contributors. He was part of the council that decided on things and only answered to the boss (not the same guy mentioned in chapter 8 who recruited Bancroft.)

D had been successfully brought over from the Foundation and was thoroughly participating in the experiments. His powers had also evolved in a way and that made him very dangerous. He was thankful to the Insurgency for providing his life with the warmth of hope, but the Insurgency didn't seem to have so much faith in him. They never let him go out of his villa in fear of him retaliating. D knew this but accepted it nonetheless as he had been rewarded with a villa and 24/7 service of any kind. He had never been treated as such and therefore made sure not to mess up and lose all of it.

The experiments he had taken part in were all related to the Evolutionary Regression Device and mainly focused on his mutated DNA. They were trying to replicate D's powers so that they could have another monster at their hands, except they could control this one.

The scientists here were crueller to D than the ones at the Foundation, and they had named people with D's powers, the Conformers

As far as D knew, their experiments had been failures and no other Conformer existed. But D was about to learn of the existence of the hooded man soon enough, in a very disturbing way.

The hooded man had been dubbed C, which was short for Conformer. He was the first civilian who had conformed to the DNA recombination experiments. The others who were taken from the President of the nation were all killed when they showed any sign of conformance.

The scientists realised that the reason that the Evolutionary Regression Device(ERD) had changed the DNA sequence of these two individuals was because of a particular sequence of their DNA that coded for an unknown protein. This code interacted with the ERD in an unprecedented way that caused it to have the ability to change itself at will.

This breakthrough had caused the Insurgency's military prowess to shoot high. But unfortunately, as much as the scientists tried, they were unable to find anyone else who shared this code. A special team was assigned to continuously search for these sequences in all the new test subjects and old ones as well.

With the power of C, the Insurgency could now raid the Foundation with a higher chance of acquiring more powerful SCPs. And they took advantage of this new ability, deploying D and C within a week of each other to sneak into the Foundation and gather as many SCPs they could. The one-week gap made sure so that D wouldn't know of the existence of C.

Everything D did from that day on, was done by C within the next month. This was the Insurgency's way of evaluating which one was better. In the end, they concluded that C, who was more submissive and followed orders truthfully, was the better choice.

They soon left D in his villa, rarely ever calling him for any experiments. His life was now meaningless but Bancroft had swayed the council's opinion from discarding D. he had made sure that D would live, for his reasons.

"I believe I can still bring some use out of that fleabag!" those were Bancroft's harsh words that had decided D's fate. The council agreed with Bancroft because they had first-hand seen what he could achieve in a short amount of time. But there were still some who questioned his loyalty to the Insurgency.

Bancroft was known to be a loyal man. And a minority in the council believed that he still held loyalty to the Foundation. They sounded their concerns every chance they got, but unfortunately for them, Bancroft had won over the trust of a majority of the council and the head of the organisation.

For the weeks that came after the meeting that decided D's fate, Bancroft would personally visit D every morning and train him. D hated training. It brought about a contrast to his comfy life in the villa, and the difference was like night and day.

"Get on your feet maggot!"

"just 3 more pushups!"

As the military training ensued, D couldn't help but wonder why they had stopped experiments and taken up training.

On the 8th day of training he built up the courage to ask the steaming army general in the camoe outfit. "we can't tell you just yet. But trust me, it'll all make sense in the end." Those were the only words James had said to D and they strongly resembled what the writer is telling himself and the audience.

The words lingered at the back of D's head for the rest of the day. What would make sense? Was the sudden onslaught of training related to the next experiment he would take part in?

As he was taking a shower, D continued to scroll through his memory, looking through all the experiments he had taken part in, trying to find any connection to the all-new physical exertion. All he could think about was that he may have to encounter another SCP soon, one that may require a strong physique to interact with.

For the duration of his stay at the Insurgency, D had conformed with 7 SCPs. Including the 3 he had conformed with at the Foundation (ERD, bad comp, drowned) he now had the powers of 10 SCPs.

He didn't have a chance to use the powers of all 7 in combat but he hoped he would soon. Despite getting comfortable with the rich life, his body still harboured the mass murderer. No matter how much material wealth he would gain, D would still crave for blood.

C on the other hand was far superior to D. Despite having his powers for a lesser duration than D, C's development had been favoured by the Insurgency. This had allowed him to conform with about 15 to 20 SCPs. He also had a much better understanding of how to use his abilities, because unlike D he had been taught everything from scratch and not just given the powers without explanation. If D would have had the time to understand his abilities, his murderous personality would have quickly integrated the powers into its arsenal. Maybe it was a blessing to humanity that D had been given his powers too early.

D's training continued for a few more weeks until the end of the month. This was the day that Bancroft had entered D's villa in a blazer rather than the usual army uniform. He sat down on the white fluffy sofa and spoke in a soft voice. D was initially in shock, not because of what he was hearing, but because he had the opportunity to see the calm, calculated side of this man. It sent chills down D's spine because he knew that this man could end his existence any time he liked

"Sit down," began general James Bancroft.

"It's about time I tell you my plan."
