An Eternal Wait

Avalon. In the eyes of Man, Avalon is the legendary land of the Fae and the final resting place of King Arthur. A place shrouded so deeply in mystery that beyond its brief mentions in obscure legends, it is almost as if it doesn't exist at all. On the other hand, in the eyes of the Moonlit World--the name coined for the hidden supernatural side of the modern World--its existence becomes more clear. Avalon-- coined the epithet of "The Everdistant Utopia"--is as the legends describe, the land of the Fae and the resting place of King Arthur. But like with most things dealing with the absolute secrecy of the Moonlit World, the greater known details are not known to humanity at large. 

The World is currently in the period of time known as the "Age of Man," associated with the steady decline of Mystery and the supernatural as a whole, and the rising dominance of humanity. A period where humanity usurped the position of apex predator from the supernatural and the rapid decline of the supernatural remnants left behind from after the "End" of the "Age of the Gods": the period where the supernatural was at it's best and where most legends and myths originate. Although the Age of the Gods was more officially said to end around 900 Years Before the Common Era with the death of Solomon, the King of Magic, remnants of the mystical age persisted long after. Nevertheless, come the latter half of the First Millennia of the Common Era and especially now in the Modern Era/The Second Millennia of the Common Era, it can be said that Mystery is at its weakest and almost every supernatural element has either ceased to be or escaped to the Reverse Side of the World--a place, in simplest terms, is a dimension/layer of reality that exists beneath the World of Man that still mimics the conditions of the Age of the Gods. It is in the Reverse Side of the World that Avalon resides.

Although Avalon exists in the Reverse Side of the World, it is a land isolated completely from the World that it cannot be reached by normal means. It is an utopia removed from all the World's destruction and decay, that even if there were any records of the depiction of the place, it would not measure in any capability to its true beauty. It is an existence that exceeds the capabilities of True Magic--unique Mystery that cannot be replicated by modern technology, such as time travel--and is one of the strongest forces in this world. This property is why the Sheathe of King Arthur--aptly named Avalon--is called the ultimate defensive Noble Phantasm, because once it is activated, it layers the boundary of Avalon over the user to completely shield them from harm. It is through this same ability that the sheathe is one of the only known ways to enter Avalon, but is pointless to even try, since the the Noble Phantasm can only be truly activated by King Arthur. According to one of the few records left behind by Merlin, the Mage of Flowers--the record in question contributing most of the known information about Avalon held by the Moonlit World today--Avalon is said to possess a magical density so immense that any human regardless of the Age they existed in would perish upon taking a single breath inside. 

In summary, Avalon is as its epithet describes, The Everdistant Utopia. It is unreachable, untouchable, and, even with all the information at hand, it is still a complete mystery in the Moonlit World, as it is in the eyes of Man. It is an eternally out of reach paradise, that even the extremely knowledge-starved mages find pointless to pursue. Because even though it is both a complete unknown and a challenge to reach like the Akashic Records, The Root of All Things and Source of True Magic, there is no benefit in a place that no human has any hope of reaching when even the True Magicians can never step a foot in that place.

To truly reach Avalon it would require a miracle. A miracle that can achieve the impossible beyond the realm of impossibility achieved by True Magic. 

Yet even when faced with the impossible beyond impossible, the future Hero of Luminescent Steel and the King that Shines Her Light to Save the World relentlessly walk the path of a miracle. 

If one eternally searches and the other eternally waits...maybe...just maybe...

Their transcendent love can bridge the gap for a miracle to occur....

But that's a stupid, downright foolhardy dream.

A beautiful concept ideal for a world of fiction, unfitting for the cold truth of reality.

An eternity? Don't make me laugh.

Those precious fools do not understand the true weight that eternity possesses.

Who's to say that the foolish idealist will not be forced to walk down the path of a Dog of ALAYA, forever entrapped in servitude as the perfect little janitor for the Will of Humanity?

Who's to say that the foolish king will ever be given freedom and rest to be a girl; that it is likely the WORLD will let go of its ultimate trump card against The Umbral Star?

It is foolish to bet an eternity on a completely uncertain game, when the House and all the cards are already stacked against you.

So....NO.

I WILL NOT LET THOSE BEAUTIFUL IDIOTS MAKE SUCH A GAMBLE.

I WILL NOT LET THEM MAKE SUCH A MISTAKE.

I will bear all their hatred and ire, their kicks and screams, to force them down the path they NEED to walk.

I will turn the infinite finite and the impossible possible. 

It is time I set up my little game.

A game that will test them time and time again, but is ultimately stacked towards their victory.

A game with the prize of the miracle those shining lights deserve.

But enough.

Let this impossible game begin.

What's up guys and welcome to the third of the four stories that I have planned as of now. The other story is a RWBY x Fate crossover that is still getting it's first chapter worked on right now, due to the complexity of what I'm trying to do there, and it will get a much longer explanation once the chapter is published. So before I ramble too much as I usually do, let's get on with the details for this one. 

As seen in the story details, this will be a Fate x DxD crossover and best girl Artoria Pendragon is going to be the protagonist of this one. Artoria will not be the only Nasuverse element prevalent in the story, and I will be fusing many elements between the two worlds together. I typically try to aim for my stories to be beginner friendly, but for this one I can't be delving into every single concept because of how long that will take. As long as you got some general familiarity with Fate and DxD, you should be fine. For reasons that will be explained probably in the next chapter, consider this a wacky Lostbelt that follows DxD canon, mixing both rulesets together. 

For now, that's all you really need to know, because more will be explained in the content of the next chapter and AN.
