3 - A Banquet of Celebration

The carriage ride had been long and bumpy, with Rook jostled about as it rumbled down the dirt road. He had spent most of the journey lost in thought, his mind racing with anticipation and nerves. He had three months left until he entered the dreaded System Academy, filled to the brim with antagonistic and munchkin characters.

As the carriage pulled up to his family's estate, Rook couldn't help but feel a sense of awe. The estate was massive, sprawling across acres of rolling hills and verdant forests. The towering castle that dominated the skyline was an imposing sight, its turrets and battlements reaching towards the sky like grasping fingers.

As he stepped off the carriage, Rook shielded his eyes against the bright sun. The air was thick with the scent of blooming flowers and freshly mown grass. He could hear the distant sound of a babbling brook, and the cheerful twittering of birds.

As he made his way through the gates, he was greeted by his family's servants, who had been eagerly awaiting his return. They bowed low, their faces shining with excitement and pride. They were all dressed in their finest clothes, ready to celebrate his achievement.

.

The estate was decorated with banners and streamers, and a large feast had been prepared.

With his training in full swing, Rook's family decided to throw a banquet in his honor. It was a grand affair, with all the nobility from the surrounding area in attendance. Rook was nervous, as he had never been comfortable in such social situations. However, he knew that this was an opportunity to make connections and improve his standing in society.

As he walked down the dimly lit hallway towards the grand banquet hall, the anticipation of the upcoming feast and celebration grew within him. The scent of roast beef and spiced wine wafted through the air, making his stomach grumble in hunger. As he approached the entrance, his eyes were met by the sight of his family members waiting to greet him.

His father, the stoic Lord of the estate, stood tall and proud, his piercing blue eyes glinting in the flickering candlelight. The wrinkles on his face spoke of a life of wisdom and experience, and his nod of acknowledgement conveyed a silent pride in his son.

Next to him, his sickly mother lay on a chaise, her once-beautiful features now worn and tired from her long illness. She offered him a weak smile, her voice hoarse from disuse as she whispered her congratulations on his achievements.

His younger sister, Lysandra Luminar, stood with a mischievous glint in her eye. Her sharp wit and intelligence were legendary in the family, and she used them to tease her older brother mercilessly. "Is that really the best outfit you could come up with?" she quipped, causing a smirk to spread across his face.

Finally, his younger brother Caspian, who was known for his adventurous spirit and athletic prowess, stepped forward and slapped him on the back. "Congratulations, big bro! I knew you could do it," he exclaimed, his enthusiasm contagious.

As they all made their way into the banquet hall, the sound of clinking glasses and lively chatter filled the air. The feast was a grand affair, with a plethora of dishes to suit every palate. He sat down at the table, surrounded by his family, feeling grateful for their support and love.

As they took their seats, Rook's father stood up to make a speech. "My son, Rook, has made us all proud," he said, his voice booming through the hall. "He has shown great dedication and determination in his training, and we are all confident that he will do great things in the future."

Rook felt his cheeks redden with embarrassment. He wasn't used to being the center of attention, and he didn't feel like he deserved such praise. However, he knew that his father was just trying to show his support.

As the banquet continued, Rook found himself engaged in conversation with Lysandra. She was as sharp-tongued as ever, but he enjoyed talking to her. They discussed politics and the state of the kingdom, and Rook was impressed by her knowledge and insight. He could see why she was so well-respected among the nobility.

Meanwhile, Caspian was busy regaling the table with stories of his latest hunting expeditions. He had always been a bit of a show-off, but Rook couldn't help but admire his younger brother's confidence and bravery.

Their mother, who had been quiet for most of the banquet, suddenly spoke up. "Rook, my dear," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I am so proud of you. You have grown into a fine young man."

Rook felt a lump form in his throat. His mother had always been frail, and he was grateful that she was able to attend the banquet.

He took her hand in his and squeezed it gently.

"Thank you, Mother," he said, his voice barely above a whisper.

As the night wore on, Rook found himself feeling more and more at ease. He had never been good at socializing, but he was starting to enjoy himself. He even found himself laughing at Caspian's ridiculous stories.

Over the next few weeks, Rook threw himself into his training, spending countless hours manipulating threads of all kinds. He experimented with different materials and shapes, learning how to create intricate webs, strong ropes, and delicate filaments. He practiced his aim and precision, learning how to entangle and disarm opponents with ease.

Through various experimentations, he understood the basics of his System. The Thread System allows Rook to control threads of all kinds, from spider silk to metal wire. He can manipulate their shape, size, and strength, and can use them for a variety of purposes, such as creating barriers, ensnaring enemies, or repairing objects.

It wasn't the most powerful, but it was versatile, one that could be used for both offense and defense. He knew that he had a lot to learn about his System, but he was excited to explore its capabilities.

He could see its potential. He could also see the challenge it presented. Unlike other Systems, the Thread System required finesse and control, and he would need to practice and hone his skills to become truly powerful.

But he didn't only train with his threads. Rook underwent rigorous training, working on his physical strength and agility. He spent hours each day running, jumping, and lifting weights, pushing himself to his limits. After all, he knew that there were monsters in human skin, that could kill him several times with just a look.

As he trained, he couldn't help but feel a sense of satisfaction. For the first time in his life, he felt like he was doing something meaningful, something that would make a difference in the world. He didn't know what lay ahead, but he knew that he was ready to face it.

One day, as he was practicing in the gardens, he noticed a young woman watching him. She was beautiful, with long golden hair and bright blue eyes. She wore a simple blue dress that accentuated her curves, and she moved with a grace that caught his attention.

"Hello," he said, approaching her. "Is there something I can help you with?"

The woman smiled, revealing a set of perfect teeth. "I was just admiring your skills," she said, her voice soft and melodious. "You're quite talented."

Rook felt a blush creeping up his neck. He wasn't used to compliments, especially not from beautiful women. "Thank you," he said, trying to sound nonchalant. "I'm still learning, though."

The woman laughed, a musical sound that sent shivers down his spine. "Aren't we all?" she said, her eyes twinkling. "My name is Adeline Eldenburg. I'm the Grand Knight here at the palace."

Rook eyes constricted, but he acted unfettered and introduced himself, and struck up a conversation. Adeline was kind and intelligent, and they had a lot in common. She was interested in the Thread System and asked him to show her some of his techniques. Seeing this as an opportunity he asked to see her skills in return.

As they worked together, Rook felt a connection forming between them. He had never felt like this before, and he wasn't sure what to do about it. After all, she had a death flag.

Adeline Eldenburg was a a key character in his failed novel [From Zero to Hero - The Tale of a Commoner's Rise in a World of Systems and Magic]. A character who had the Saint Sword System, which helped the main cast in the late stage of the novel, but eventually she dies a tragic death.

As the sun began to set, Adeline excused herself, promising to meet him again soon. Rook watched her go, and went back to grinding. He knew that he needed to be careful, but he couldn't help the way he felt. He had a System now, and with it came a sense of power and possibility. Maybe, just maybe, he could make something of himself in this new world.
