5 First Lesson -Magic-

They can't believe it.

A new element they have never heard before, and the number 9999.

Who is this person, they ask.

Why does he have that element, what can it do, and how did he reach 9999.

But for now, they must keep quiet, observing him and his ability.

----------------------------------------------------

After all that commotion, suddenly Mari (the blonde girl) approached me and declared me as her rival, then just ran away.

What?

Anyway, after our aptitude test, we were then divided into two division, the Warrior division and the Mage division.

Hildagea was put into the Warrior division, Mari and Dahlia was put into the Mage division.

And me?

Of course it's the Mage division.

Still a part of me wanted to go to the Warrior division, I also wanted to see how magic work and the way to use it effectively as it can be helpful in the future.

But this doesn't mean I would stop my training to use my spear more effectively.

Magic is good for long range combat, but for close combat, I still need a way to defend myself. Relying too much on one thing is bad, even though the spear can cover both close and long range combat.

I'll probably ask one of the Warrior division teacher to train me.

And now, we are taken to the training ground of the school to see how we would fair in real combat.

As I walked into the arena, I felt a strange feeling. I just shrug it off and continue walking. But when Mari walks through the same place that I did, she suddenly asked, "Is there a barrier here?".

Barrier?

"Ah, yes, good question, Mari-san. This arena is currently surrounded by a magic barrier, so that if there were any explosions or huge impact from within, the outside area won't be damaged."

"Amazing!"

"As expected of the Marigold family!"

I can hear people praising her.

A barrier, huh...

I place my hand on a seemingly invisible wall of magic, before turning back and regrouping with the students.

"Hello, everyone. My name is Gladios, the one who will take your test." The teacher introduced herself. She's wearing a white coat, and a pair of glasses. She has long blue hair, and somehow she looks familiar to Iris-nee-chan. I remember that she said she has an older sister who works at the school. I'll have to ask her later then.

"And today, I'd like to see your real ability in action. Each of you will use an offensive spell and try to hit the target. You can use whatever magic you like."

"You have to aim precisely at your target first, before worrying about its firepower."

She mentioned target but I look around and see nothing.

"Where's the target?" Someone asks.

"Don't worry about it." She says, before putting her hand in front of her.

"<<Fire - Summon: Wolf>>!!"

Suddenly, at a distance, a magic circle appears and slowly rising up is a wolf with its body covering entirely in flame.

The students awe in surprise.

Unfamiliar with the event that just happened in front of me, I decide to ask one of the students I first met at the start, Mari Marigold. When her sister, who is standing next to her, sees me, she suddenly hide behind Mari's back.

"Eh?! You have such high magic capability, yet you don't know what is happening?"

"Erm...I've spent my entire childhood training with weapons, so I only know very little about magic itself."

"Yet you joined the Magic division?"

"I wanted to know more about magic."

"Really? Even if you have talent, without knowledge to back it up, I don't think you can get to be the best student!"

I don't like where this is going.

"Because it is I, Mari Marigold, will soon become the best sorcerer in the Blume Academy!"

Oh.

"Ehh...Go ahead then."

To be honest, I don't care about being at the top or whatever, I'm only here because my mother wished so.

But maybe it would be a good idea to have some friends...

"Oi! What's with that reaction?! Are you mocking me?"

"I'm not. I just don't have the will to become number one like you."

"...Just you wait! Even if you don't want to, I will still see you as my rival!"

What's wrong with her?

And then she starts to explain about magic. I think I heard it once from my mother, but it's not any bad hearing it again.

This world is made up of mana, and the air we are breathing in right now is also filled with mana. Inside our body, our blood vessels, also contain mana.

Mana shapes the will of the world, and we live relying on mana.

In order to use magic, one must concentrate the mana flow to a specific part of your body, before chanting the appropriate spells.

There are two types of Spells: the ones that need chant to work and the chantless one.

The chantless spells are usually the low-ranking one, and the ones that need chant are usually from the higher Rank, but you can completely skip the chant if your Rank is high enough.

Your entity Rank can also affect the magic being produced, as your body can contain more mana the higher your Rank is.

As to what Rank is, I will explain another time.

"These wolfs here will be your target." Our teacher says as she summons around 20 or more of the wolfs. "I know I said not to mind about the power, but try your best to vanquish it."

"So she can only summon 20 familiars at a time...A teacher she might be, but it's disappointing if that's all she got." Mari says with a small voice.

She looks dejected.

Should I say something?

"<<Water - Ball>>!!"

The students one by one cast magic at the target. Some hit the target, some miss, but none were strong enough to detroy the target completely.

Then, it's Mari's turn.

"Now, feast your eyes as I will set the standard for all of you."

Let's see what she can do.

"She's up! It's the first daugther of the Marigolds!"

"Her magic compatibility is over 200! Her spell must be devastating!"

"She was ignored over that 500-guy over there, but 500 is more than a genius already! We've not have one for a decade!"

I can hear people gossiping, but please leave me out of this.

Then things went silent.

"O' Spirit of Light...

With my mana as sacrifice

Lend me your power

And show them a world of light!

<<Light - Blast>>!"

A yellowish white magic circle appeared in the middle of her palm, and a giant blast of light comes out of her hand and heads its way to one of the wolfs.

It immidiately got destroyed as soon as the light ray hit the target.

...I'm impressed.

So that's true magic.

"You took down a Fire Wolf on your first day, unbelievable!" The teacher says.

"This is nothing for the Marigolds."

"But if it was him, I'm sure he would have done it much better..." She says in a small tone.

'Him'?

Oh, it's the little sister's turn next.

"Oi, it's the taboo child."

"I bet she's thinking she's greater than us just because she's Mari-sama little sister."

Mari-sama?

"She's probably not her real sister, as she has nothing alike with her. Even though Mari-sama's hair has a beautiful golden color, hers is a disgusting black."

People start whispering bad things about her.

I feel uncomfortable.

I was going to say something, but her older sister has already spoken up.

"If you want to say something to my sister, say it to me! Don't stand there whispering like cowards!"

She seems really angry about people saying bad things about her sister.

After a while, Dahlia starts to chant her spell.

"O' Spirit of Darkness

With my mana as sacrifice

Lend me your power

And consume your enemy with your shadow!

<<Dark - Blast>>!!"

Similiar to her sister, a dark purple magic circle appears on her hand, and from it a blast of black light comes out, hitting the target.

It also manages to destroy the target.

Everyone is surprised, but unlike with Mari's where everyone looks at her with respect, they instead become fear of her.

Dahlia seems to have notice this too, before being pulled away again by her sister.

...

Seems like it's my turn.

I stand in line, before raising my hand like many have done.

I've never chanted in my life, but I'll follow my instinct.

"O' the Spirit of Water and Sea

With my power as your energy

Obey me and my command

Drown my enemy in the sea of the world

And show them who's their god!

<<Water - Liquid Edge>>!"

This time, a blue magic circle appears and coming out of it is a water blade. And its size is huge!

Oi, isn't this a tad to big?!

Then, it flies toward the wolf and slices it in half.

But it doesn't stop there.

Somehow it keeps flying and finally hit one of the wall, leaving a big crack along it.

The whole arena starts shaking.

...I did not expect its power to be this strong.

Everyone has their eye upon me.

This is going to be troublesome...
