20 Chapter 20

“The real name of the man you tried to save was Milton Friedermeyer not Will Hammond. Fifty-two, drank too much, no steady employment. Did odd jobs all over the mountain and the valley in construction, window cleaning, yard work, dog sitting, you name it. Rented rooms by the week when he had money, and when he didn’t, he slept in his truck, which was found a distance away from the side of the bridge from where he was shot.”

Bond nodded. “He’d been running. Why he left himself out in the open, I’ll never know. I heard that shot and dove off the path to hide.”

“But we were trained to do that. As far as I could find, he’s never served in any branch of the service.”

“Probably too terrified to think.”

“His blood alcohol was way above legal limits, so that’s a factor in how fast his brain could compute. Shouldn’t have been driving.”

“So he could’ve been involved in just about anything. Maybe even boinked some guy’s wife or daughter?”
