“We pushed through an update for the homunculi based on this. All creatures that have been slumbering within the Foundation’s engines now possess the ability to eat each other to grow stronger. We hoped we might learn more from the creature, but then…then…”
His voice trailed off.
“Can we burn it? Or freeze it?” Sumire demanded, indifferent to the information he had imparted.
“I-I don’t know,” he stammered in reply.
“What do you know?” Lilith demanded.
“We have another homunculus, a prototype, one designed to replace the old craft we were using. If we could force it to absorb that, then we could detonate it from within.”
Lilith looked at him with disgust.
“You bred a homunculus with a self-destruct feature?”
“It was necessary,” he protested. “For such long flights, it would be costly to bring such a thing back, so—”
Lilith pulled the deck of cards she had received from Sturluson out of her worn jacket.
